    Brooke Larsen: A Passionate Journey

    Brooke Larsen: A Passionate Journey
Brooke Larsen has had a remarkable career that includes single handedly starting an art program at the Richard Stockton University in Pomona, New Jersey in the early seventies. He was the only teacher! Then, after moving to New York City, he became an integral part of the early eighties art scene in New York. Along with his artwork, he became one of the most important frame designers and makers of this generation of contemporary artists' work.

In 1991 he reluctantly took an offer to teach a Saturday afternoon class at the School of Visual Arts. This turned out to be a revelation for Brooke in rediscovering his passion for teaching.

Thirty years later he is still teaching at SVA and has become a legend for his engaging projects that challenge and inspire students to go beyond their limitations. In 2018 he taught a semester at the School of Creative Arts in Shanghai Tech University and had a show of his work.

He has kept up a vigorous art career throughout exhibiting in galleries and museums. Wherever Brooke Larsen shows up, or whatever he does, he brings his passion, commitment and sense of humor with him.

Becoming Pomona was recorded at the 25th Franklin County CiderDays in November of 2019.

The goal of this pomona panel discussion was to share personal stories on the inspirational effect of CiderDays on women in the cider industry, specifically the following women:

    • CiderDays co-founder Judith Maloney of West County Cider. Judith was crowned Queen Pomona the night prior to this panel discussion

Judith Maloney | West County Cider Judith Maloney | West County Cider

Autumn Stoscheck, Autumn Stoscheck, Even's Cidery

    • April Woodard - Panel moderator, Cidermaker, and CiderDays Committee

    April Woodard April Woodard

April moderated this talk, with Judith speaking first, then Autumn, Ria and April.

Below are two 2 Key quotes from Judith on CiderDays and Cider that absolutely says it all:

    Referring back to CiderDays.

"People loved their cider no matter what it tasted like."

And on the impact of this event moving forward,

"We created more than something that is drunk - it is in the spirit."

In 2020, due to the coronavirus 19, a Cider Trail was created for western Massachusetts and the Berkshires. The trail extended the offerings that usually took place just on one weekend expanding it over October into the new year.

This chat with Susanna and James Forbes was recorded at CiderCon2019, the annual trade conference hosted by the United States Association of Cider Makers.

Susanna & James Forbes Little Pomona Susanna & James Forbes

It was at CiderCon2018 when I first had the opportunity to sit down for a chat with Susanna and James. Listen to that chat on episode 126 Little Pomona’s Big Ciders | Hereford, UK They started selling cider under their brand name Little Pomona in 2015. James has been involved in the wine trade for quite a while and is now the Chairperson of the Three Counties Cider and Perry Association.

Susanna has been writing about craft libations since 2000. She writes for Imbibe magazine and sill uses the Twitter handle @drinkbritain. Her recent book The Cider Insider is what prompted this sit down chat and the fact that I adore the Forbes and always love hearing about and tasting their newest cider.

Little Pomona Cider Tasted during this chat

    Hazy Ways Part 1

    • 7.4% alcohol by volume
    • Apples used: 91% Dabinet and some Elias Bitter
    • 750 ML cider - bottle conditioned

Like all the ciders that I have had with the Forbes, James did a “Shake to Wake” of this bottle, which allows the sediment on the bottom of the bottle to come into solution before pouring, much like one would do with a Hefeweizen beer. You can also pour the cider without Shaking to Wake. But why, when tipping the bottle carefully back and forth is so much fun?!?

    What’s up at Little Pomona?

126: Little Pomona's Big Ciders | Herefordshire, UK

126: Little Pomona's Big Ciders | Herefordshire, UK

Little Pomona’s makers, Susanna and James Forbes have a long history with libations. James worked as a wine buyer and marketer, while Susanna who started in physics became one of the UK’s leading libation writers. Do check out her website and blog Drink Britain, it will be time well spent.

Listen to this chat with Susanna and James as they tell their tale of moving out of city and into the country to begin selling Little Pomona commercially in 2015.

The orchard is located in Herefordshire, in the town of Bromyard.

    Little Pomona Ciders

There is no doubt that these ciders are stepping out! Read: not your typical UK cider.

James’ background in wine is certainly influencing the profile of each cider produced. If ever there was a cider that would be worthy of buying one now to drink and 5 more to cellar, Little Pomona is the cidery to choose.

Delicate, yet bold, each cider that I tasted during this chat was complex, tannic and not your typical UK cider.

Little Pomona Ciders coming up for 2018

    • Old Man and The Bees - 7.5% wild yeast cider
      • Dabinet
      • Harry Masters Jersey
      • Foxswhelp
      • Ellis bitter
    • The Unicorn - a spontaneous keeved cider
      • We “Shaked it to wake it” and then drank it in this chat! Lovely
    • Art of Darkness (2015)
    • Being released at the London Wine Fair on the 22nd of May 2018 go to (stand DB15) and find C’est Si Bon Bonnes (2016), a single barrel bottling
    • In July 2018 look for Perry Comma, a single barrel bottling in Pet Nat style form the 2017 vintage. The fruit came from a very ancient orchard close to Dymock in Gloucestershire.
    • In August, look for another Pet Nat with a blend of Dabinett (95%) and Ellis Bitter (5%) from the 2017 harvest, called For Those About to Rack.
