The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E12

The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E12

Episode 12 of Season 5 aired on 24 Mar 2022 on Rebel Rock Radio.   The show kicked off with Saxon and a track off their latest album Carpe Diem called 'All For One'.  Next up Tyler Bryant and The Shakedown with a most excellent track called 'Without You'.  Tyler was widely hailed pre-Covid as the next big thing and there is no doubt he's got a lot to offer, awesome guitarist, great voice, and rock star looks.  We took another track off the new Tony Martin album Thorns.  It is a great album, well worth checking out.  We spent some time with the classics, Ozzy Osbourne, Guns 'n' Roses, and then checked out a Southern Rock band out of Bristol UK called Sons of Liberty.   I thought they were new kids on the block but Jon Schaffer of Iced Earth fame is in the band so I need to find out what, what before the next show.

Punk from Sex Pistols and Ramones with 'Pretty Vacant' and 'I Can't Give You Anything', we followed up with a bit of Oasis and then got back into the metal with Megadeth and Metallica.  New stuff came from Eddie Vedder and a track called 'The Dark' off Earthling and 'Kick' a new track from Def Leppard.  This led to a brief discussion about Vivian Campbell and an example played from his side project Last In Line.   I had the new Rammstein and didn't get a chance to play it.  I think I need a bit more time on it.  The New Kid Rock 'Still Somethin' off Bad Reputation is wonderful and a highlight of the show.

SA music came from The Black Cat Bones, Springbok Nude Girls and Falling Mirror with a track called '(Time) Is a Thief.  I played 'Smoke On The Water'!  I shy away from these super rock classics like Stairway and Bohemian Rhapsody because they have just been so overdone but the classic Made In Japan album version bought back some good memories.  We got heavy with Mastodon, Killswitch Engage, Slipknot, and Sepultura before wrapping it up in a mellow way with Tom Keifer, Neil Young and Tom Waits with 'Jesus Gonna Be Hear Soon'.

Artists featured:  Saxon, Tyler Bryant & the Shakedown, Tony Martin, Ozzy Osbourne, Guns ‘n’ Roses, Volbeat, Helloween, Pop Evil, Marilyn Manson, In Flames, Sons of Liberty, Kid Rock, The Pretty Reckless, Joan Jett, Bewitcher, Eddie Vedder, Def Leppard, Sex Pistols, Ramones, Oasis, Megadeth, Metallica, The Black Cat Bones, Springbok Nude Girls, Falling Mirror, Last In Line, Mastodon, Killswitch Engage, Manowar, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Deep Purple, Scorpions, Sepultura, Slipknot, Tom Keifer, Neil Young, Tom Waits

    The Rock Ballads

    The Rock Ballads

Slow songs didnt just rock the 80's, it rocked the 90's, 2000's and present day! Usually the rock ballads are what climb the rock charts and move to the pop charts.  Some will say the ballads are a form of selling out or what have you but ballads for me are  a way for the artist to show another side of their talent.  Ballad: A song narrating a story that can be dramatic, funny or romantic,

Sentimental Ballad: is a more emotional style dealing with romantic intimate relationships.

Power Ballad: an emotional rock song delivered with powerful vocals.

The Story of Rock and Roll: S2E13

The Story of Rock and Roll: S2E13

Season 2, Episode 13 of The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show took place at midnight on 3 July 2020.  It kicked off with the stated intent of getting this place Hotter Than Hell.  I think we succeeded but you will have to be the judge.  Metallica set a blistering pace with a live version of Hit the Lights off Hard-Wired to Self-Destruct.  It was pretty much all fast, driving, rock and roll through until we took a brief Punk break with The Jam and The Stranglers.  I say Punk lightly because both bands are prisoners of the genre rather than true examples of the idiosyncrasies of Punk.  That being said it set us up nicely for 11 minutes of Judas Priest featuring Richie Faulkner’s guitar solo at Wacken in 2016.

As shows go this one had a pretty good mix of everything, we went back to 1967 for some Jimi Hendrix and also checked out what Leslie West sounded like in Mountain back in 1971 with Nantucket Sleighride, an often neglected rock classic.  There was a nice little bit of nostalgia with The Quireboys and The Dogs D’Amour and the idea of preparing for TSORR 30 years ago.  ACDC and Jimmy Barnes took care of the Australian music and Blue Scream and Fokofpolisiekar did the honours for local content.  Pop Evil made their TSORR debut with an awesome track called 100 in a 55 and then we were into the dying 15 min leading up to what I considered to be the highlight of the show i.e. playing you the track that I have been addicted to throughout lockdown, Killswitch Engage with Bite the Hand That Feeds.  I didn’t dedicate it to Jackson, my beloved Border Collie but I could well have J

Artists featured:  Blue Scream, Kiss, Ozzy Osbourne, Axel Rudi Pell, Red Dragon Cartel, Fokofpolisiekar, The Stranglers, Mountain, the Jam, ACDC, Pop Evil, The Quireboys, Jimmy Barnes, Black Label Society, Q5, Rainbow, Black Veil Brides, Killswitch Engage, Jimi Hendrix, Mötley Crüe, Billy Squier, Sixx A.M., Judas Priest, Texas Hippie Coalition, The Dogs D’Amour, Metallica.
