     PL Situation
The technical comptroller at Nationals stops you as you're about to walk to the platform for your third attempt bench. They tell you that your wrist wraps are illegally wrapped and that they need to be removed/fixed before you can step on the platform. You have 20 seconds left on the clock. What do you do?

     New Lifter Tip
Extra long "press" calls on Bench are typically the lifter's fault. A press call is only given when the bar is motionless on the chest. The key word is "motionless".  Agree or Disagree?

They also discuss their experiences with in-person coaching and virtual coaching and how it differs.

There are 14 lifters in your flight. When you go to start warming up, you see that the warm-up options are 2 squat stands that are not real stable and one ER Rack with Kilo Plates to warmup on. There are 10 other lifters around the ER Rack. Where do you warm up?

    New Lifter Tip
Train with referee commands.  You have to wait for them in a meet, therefore practice waiting for them in training. Agree or disagree?

    PL Situation
After weigh-ins, while warming up, you look at the scoreboard and your forecasted total is 2.5kg behind the forecasted 1st place total. Your last squat warmup felt really light and there are still 2 minutes left to change your squat opener. Should you increase your opening squat so that your total is projected 1st after openers?

    New Lifter Tip
Do not choose a coach based solely on their social media presence.  Good marketing does not make you a good powerlifting coach.  On the flip side, being a good marketer does not make you a bad powerlifting coach. Do your homework and be thorough.

Josh Rohr doesn’t mind being beardless in this post but refuses to shave. When will the madness end?

Nationals are in 10 weeks. Before you can sign up, you get a call from your sister. There is a family reunion on the same day you would lift at Nationals. The city/state where the family reunion is being held has a local meet the day after. Many of your family have never seen you compete.  Do you do Nationals or the local meet after the Family Reunion?

    New LifterTip
Have your warm-up attempts written out before you start warming up. Discuss them with your handler/coach ahead of time. This will allow for near perfect timing of your warmups and significantly less stressful warmup experience that doesn't feel rushed. Agree or Disagree?

Shin Length Socks for deadlift: Make it a habit to put them on as soon as you finish your 3rd attempt bench. Too many people go out for their first deadlift without having them on and time out. If they are already on, you can simply pull them up if you forget.

    Thoughts

    • Listener submitted scenario:
      •  I have a  wry experienced lifter (long time barbell and wrestling athlete) who has competed twice before.
      • 10 minutes prior to his session the lifter mis- placed his cell phone and has some anxiety  about being to find it and stay in contact with his wife. We search the warm up room and all of our gear bags but to no avail. We press forward with warm ups and head back to the tunnel to await our first squat.
      • As a coach I tell him, we will find the phone  By all accounts he was primed and ready physically to go off for a big meet.
      • Unfortunately what happened next wrecked the day. One of the National Level referees comes back into the tunnel and goes on a rant about how no white lights were being given out for squats this morning and how no lifter is getting remotely close to parallel much less to adequate depth and warns us (3 lifters out) that if we have questionable depth, we better make sure we push it further.
      • As a coach I hear that as some guy giving advice, but for the lifter that was a major point of concern and he began to question his depth which ultimately led to him altering his form  creating an 0/3 bomb on squats due to compromised form and a lost cell phone. This then translated to bench where the mental disconnect is continued and we went 0/3.
      • My question ultimately comes in two forms, how do you handle this situation as 1.) An Athlete/Competitor and 2.) As a Coach. .
    • #PLSituation: The meet director of a meet you are competing in decides to bring in a band instead of a playlist.  They ask each lifter for input of which band to bring in. It can be any band from any era. What band would you choose to play at your meet and why?

Ep. 76 - Lessons from Selena

    Episode 76 (1/19/22)

    Introductions

    • PLSituation
      • You coach a team of 20 lifters, competing at the State Meet. There is no limit to how many lifters you can list on the official team roster because only the team's 10 best scores will make up the total team points. If the team roster has less than 10 lifters, a single lifter can score points twice by being in 2 divisions (Open and Masters or Full Power and Bench Only). If a team has 10 or more lifters, a single lifter can only score once. Mathematically, it would be detrimental to the team points to list more than your top 9 lifters, entered in two divisions. While beneficial to the team points, this would mean leaving over half of your athletes off of the official team roster. Official rosters will be listed on the event website, in the lifters guide and in the state meet program.
        • Do you include all of your team members or only the top 9?
    • NewLifterTip
      • Squat Depth:
        • You are low enough when the top surface of the legs at the hip joint are lower than the top of the knees. It has nothing to do with hamstrings being parallel to the ground or any other factor. The only thing that matters are the two points mentioned above. Many newer lifters think they are squatting deep enough when they are actually high.
          • Agree or Disagree?
    • Lara reflects on the life on friend and teammate Selena Hesse
    • Josh and Lara reflect on lessons they've learned over the years about balancing life and powerlifting and what is important to them

    • New Georgia Meets:
      • 4/30/22 - USA Powerlifting Georgia Ladies of Iron - Lawrenceville, GA
      •  5/21/22 - USA Powerlifting Savannah Showdown - Savannah, GA
      • 7/30/22 - USA Powerlifting Atlanta Open - Atlanta, GA
    • PLSituation
      • You are coaching a brand new lifter in their first meet. They are 8/8 on the day. You call 150 kg for their 3rd deadlift, which would be 5 kg under their training PR. The primary goal was to go 9/9 and have a great first meet experience. Looking at the scoreboard, if you bump up to 157.5 kg, that would be enough to earn the bronze medal out of 10 lifters in the weight class.
        • Do you make a change or stay at 150 kg?
    • NewLifterTip
      • Yes, it's a new year but that "new year feel" will fade. The good news is every single day is a new day. Don't lose sight of that opportunity!
