Bag Man Bonus Episode: Indictment Edition

Bag Man Bonus Episode: Indictment Edition

In 1973, in the throes of the Watergate scandal, three young federal prosecutors uncovered a separate criminal scheme being run inside the White House — the sitting vice president, Spiro Agnew, was taking envelopes stuffed with cash in exchange for official acts as an elected official. If Nixon left office, Agnew would be the next President. And so, what would happen if the President was charged with a federal crime? Worse yet, what if he was convicted? Now that Donald Trump has been charged with 37 federal crimes – as he runs again for president — Rachel Maddow and Bag Man executive producer Mike Yarvitz talk with the three Spiro Agnew prosecutors who have the only experience in our nation’s history with a situation like this.

    S2E66 | Kishore Da's film New Delhi
In this episode, Amit Kumar delves into the captivating movie "New Delhi," which stirred up a storm of controversy due to its exploration of caste discrimination, a pervasive issue in India. However, it was Kishore Da who truly stole the show with his enchanting songs, leaving a lasting impression. The film's gripping narrative, filled with unexpected twists and turns, mirrored real-life events, as it became entangled in a landmark copyright case that set a precedent for future conflicts in the industry. Stay tuned for more.

    Re-Constructing Basic Liberties

    Re-Constructing Basic Liberties

What is the future of constitutional rights protections and equal citizenship in our constitutional democracy? Is substantive due process over after Dobbs, or can we reconstruct it?

We talk with Jim Fleming (Boston University School of Law, JD/PhD) about his recent book, “Constructing Basic Liberties: A Defense of Substantive Due Process” (2022), in conversation with Ken Kersch (Boston College, Political Science, JD/PhD), an expert on conservative political and legal thought, and working on a new book "The Right Rights: The Conservative Encounter with Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, 1954-1980."

    Precedent and the Supreme Court

    Precedent and the Supreme Court

When the Supreme Court decides how the law, and the Constitution, should be interpreted in a case, that interpretation becomes a precedent. Once that judicial precedent has been set, it's understood that the interpretation and its reasoning should be applied to similar cases in the future. So why might the Supreme Court reconsider its own precedent? And what happens when a precedent is modified, or overruled?

We talk to Nina Varsava, a law professor at University of Wisconsin, Madison who studies judicial precedent, and wrote the article, "Precedent on Precedent," and Rachel Rebouche, a law professor at Temple University who specializes in family law, health care law, and comparative family law, and has written about the potential impact of overturning Roe v Wade

What Does The Bible Say About Divine Authority #3

What Does The Bible Say About Divine Authority #3

This is Arnie and Fred's third discussion of Divine or God's Authority. Our first discussion considered what we termed  a "Chain of Divine Authority", beginning with God having all authority. Our second session reviewed the New Testament's inspiration, completeness, certainty, assurance and authority as God's final revelation of His will, replacing the Old Testament; that all men must obey it, and that now only teachings and practices authorized in the New Testament are in fact, authorized. The focus of our discussion today will be how to understand and apply what the New Testament allows and requires, as opposed to what it forbids. Take about 30 minutes to listen in on our discussion. Have your Bible handy to make sure what we say is in fact what the Bible says.

*Clarification* Erik asserted the Civil War was about states right's. We know that it is was far more complex than that and that was an aspect of the causes.

Quote from Runaway World: There are three main areas in which emotional communication, and therefore intimacy, are replacing the old ties that used to bind together people’s personal lives – in sexual and love relationships, parent–child relationships and also in friendship. To analyse these I want to use the idea of the ‘pure relationship’. I mean by this a relationship based upon emotional communication, where the rewards derived from such communication are the main basis for the relationship to continue. I don’t mean a sexually pure relationship. Also I don’t mean anything that exists in reality. I’m talking of an abstract idea that helps us understand changes going on in the world. Each of the three areas just mentioned – sexual and love relationships, parent–child relationships and friendship – is tending to approximate to this model. Emotional communication or intimacy is becoming the key to what they are all about.

Albert Mohler: Chance of Big Change on America’s Political Landscape

Albert Mohler: Chance of Big Change on America’s Political Landscape

Can Americans be financially coerced to underwrite labor unions when they are opposed to positions taken by unions?

That was the big issue this week before the nation’s highest court—whether workers can be coerced to financially underwrite and undergird labor unions when the positions taken by the union would be opposed to their own convictions.

The case is known as Janus v. AFSCME—the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees—and it challenges Supreme Court precedent that goes back four decades, requiring persons in certain categories of employment to contribute union dues and fees even when they do not want to be members of the union.

Today, with Justice Neil Gorsuch on the court, it is expected that the court will reverse its 40-year-plus precedent.

This may mean a big, big change on America’s political landscape.

Limited Appeal - Who's scared of that waddling bird?
Once again we come to the rescue for a curious listener who asked the titular question of google, and somehow landed at our site. Since until now we had little to help our new friend, we've decided to remedy things by answering his query. Maybe. Alternatively, we might just start digressing about whether birds get drunk, and then how to explain drinking scotch at work to your boss, and then maybe the preferred snackable form for alcohol dehydrogenase, or why the ancient egyptians performed circumcisions, and how. Or maybe this was all about cats. Look, if you want us to stay on topic, at least articulate your question in an interpretable form. Jackass! Anyway, we somehow answer the dude's question in the end listen to find out how we figured it out. And send us your questions directly by email (maskedman@limitedappeal.net).
