Creator of the "eventually, forever" newsletter and film twitter heavy Adam Sullivan joins us to discuss the brilliant Hayao Miyazaki and his 1992 film 'Porco Rosso'. Initially conceived as a short film exclusively for in-flight guests of Japan Airlines, the film eventually grew in ambition and scope and now stands as one of Miyazaki's most underrated, visually transcendent masterpieces. 

We discuss the film's many classic Hollywood touchpoints, including the films of Howard Hawks, Victor Fleming, and John Ford and how these influences create a sense of fantasy more grounded that other Miyazaki works. Then, we discuss the film's setting amidst the rising tide of fascism in the Adriatic and its connection to the moving character portrait at its core. Finally, we discuss how 'Porco Rosso' (perhaps more than any other film) suggests some of the director's late period affinities in works like 'The Wind Rises'.

Plus: We talk Miyazaki's latest work 'The Boy & The Heron', which we have all had the chance to see ahead of its wide release in the US Friday, 12/8/23.

On the 35th episode of The Cinematic Odyssey, Max and Tristen discuss one of cinema's most respected, storied, and greatest filmmakers, Hayao Miyazaki. We talk in depth of his 1997 masterwork Princess Mononoke where we see Miyazaki unveil the futile violence of human conflict and the abusive relationship that man has with nature. It's the legend Hayao Miyazaki's birthday this month so we're covering two of his most revered films starting with Princess Mononoke. It's a masterpiece and arguably transcends it's origin as an anime. This movie is filled with beautiful artistry and storytelling, deep characters and themes, epic action, and the perfect amount of whimsy. It's hard to find a bad thing to say about it and this is why Miyazaki is a legend whose films are timeless. If you haven't seen this movie yet, you fucked up. Welcome to The Anime Critique, the monthly Anime & Manga podcast by the boys at Betwixt Ideas. On this episode the boys talk about and review Princess Mononoke. The 1997 masterpiece film from Studio Ghibli in which we follow a simple but beautifully told tale of Man Vs Nature. Sprinkle a ton of Japanese folk lore, forest deities and outstanding visuals and score. We follow Ashitaka trying to rid a demons curse and battle between humanity’s greed for resources and natures resilience to fight back. Shaq has finally caught up with Mashle and the boys have a spoiler filled chat on how great Mashle is and wish it gets an anime adaption. Also, Shaq has been rewatching some JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, which lead on to a discussion about how disappointed the boys are about Netflix with how they are handling Stone Ocean. Jamie still be on his reading grind with Tower of God, very close to catching up and again he sings it’s praises. Shaq has no One Piece update this month. We pray to the anime gods that next month he will have watched more.
