The Future of Multifamily: An Insider’s View with RealPage Industry Principals

The Future of Multifamily: An Insider’s View with RealPage Industry Principals

As part of our Multifamily Women® Summit, we share time with innovative brands as part of our "Meet the Sponsors" series that showcases those brands that are supporting the platform to advance technology, innovation, leadership, and investments.

On today's episode, host Carrie Antrim talked with Krista Hurley and Talisa Dever who are both seasoned Industry Principals at RealPage. When it comes to leveraging technology to drive efficiencies and increase ROI, these women are the go-to authority. They have been instrumental in shaping innovative strategies that have not just disrupted but transformed the way we think about property management and resident engagement.

Krista and Talisa discuss how, according to a recent survey, two-thirds of multifamily renters are satisfied with their current housing situation because it provides them with financial freedom. This indicates that a majority of renters who choose to live in apartments are content with their decision to rent rather than buy a property. Renting offers these individuals the flexibility to allocate their money towards other expenses or investments, giving them more control over their finances.

These insights are invaluable for RealPage as they delve into the minds of their customers and gain a deeper understanding of the industry's direction. By combining multifamily market intelligence with a customer-centric approach and addressing pain points, RealPage can identify areas where technology can bridge gaps and assist its customers.

RealPage places great emphasis on excellence, character, ownership, and teamwork as their core values and guiding principles. These four values serve as the foundation of the company's identity. These values have evolved over time and continue to be the fundamental principles that RealPage strives to uphold. They not only guide the company internally but also shape their interactions with clients and their engagement in the industry. These values are the most crucial aspect of RealPage's culture.

Bridging The Gap Between Operational Performance And Financial Impact With Amber Tran

Bridging The Gap Between Operational Performance And Financial Impact With Amber Tran

In this episode of the Multifamily Women® Podcast, host Carrie Antrim interviews Amber Tran, Product Designer at Vizibly. This episode is part of our "Meet the Sponsors" Series where we get to know the brands creating the most forward-thinking innovations in software and technology to offer solutions for multifamily property management and ownership to become more efficient and successful.

Amber shares her insights on user-centered design and how it can be applied to the world of multifamily property management. She discusses her role at Vizibly and the importance of designing experiences that add value to the end user.

The success of a design or product in property management is measured by its ability to provide a user experience that caters to the needs of property managers. Amber emphasizes the importance of a simplified user interface that is still complex enough for power users, aiming to strike a balance where technology is useful and enhances property managers' efficiency.

Technology is not meant to replace jobs but rather to support and enhance human efficiency. Amber addresses the fear that technology will replace jobs, clarifying that it is more of a transition. The purpose of technology in this context is to provide property managers and on-site teams with more time to focus on building relationships.

While technology can automate tasks and streamline processes, it cannot replace the human touch and understanding necessary in property management. The goal of technology is to give property managers more time and enable them to be faster and more efficient. The success of a design or product in this context is measured by its ability to improve outcomes, processes, and user experience.

Sequoia does to itself what the Biden administration wants to do with Google

Sequoia does to itself what the Biden administration wants to do with Google

All the cool kids are filling out the Equity listener survey. We want to hear from you!

It was a hectic week, with little in the way of the traditional Summer Slowdown making itself known. So, here's what Alex and Mary Ann covered with some help from our dear friend Jacquie Melinek:

    • WWDC in a nutshell: In case you missed it, Apple had a big event this week. On tap were the usual run of software updates, and improved computers in both laptop and desktop format. And, you know, that other thing.
    • Affirm partners with Amazon (again): This is not Affirm's first tie-up with Amazon, but investors are pretty excited that the pair of companies are once again linking arms. As we continue to wait for mega-unicorn Klarna's IPO — more notes here — we are keeping our ears close the BNPL ground.
    • Cava's IPO continues to delight Alex: What has an IPO coming up and has this little podcast in a tizzy? Yep, it's Cava, the fast-casual chain that, thanks to a dollop or two of venture capital money, we get to cover!
    • All things SEC and Crypto: The SEC broke into its hammer closet so that it could go play whack-a-mole this week with crypto exchanges both foreign and domestic.
    • Sequoia does to itself what regulators want to do to Google: What has three parts and is now competing with itself? Sequoia. Think of it like an inverse Google, if you will.
    • How real estate will affect the climate crisis: It turns out that construction is not so good for the planet. And with a commercial real estate crisis brewing, can we add one to one and get five?

Next week, Equity is on vacation! We're taking a breather before launching into another massive run of shows, but we'll be back before you know it.

EPS 166 UVA Alum co-founds a company to improve the availability, quality, and affordability of housing

EPS 166 UVA Alum co-founds a company to improve the availability, quality, and affordability of housing

Housing costs in the United States are constantly rising.

Why that matters? Is because an increasing number of individuals and families continue to struggle to find quality and affordable homes today!

Jason Bordainick, our guest for today’s episode, and the co-founder of Hudson Valley Property Group, recognized this issue and addressed it. And sitting with us today, he’s talking about everything it took for him to identify the problem and remedy it.

Bordainick's entrepreneurial journey began at the University of Virginia, where he founded Off Campus Partners, a company that helped students find off-campus housing. After completing his MBA at Stanford, he founded Hudson Valley Property Group with his childhood friend, Andrew Cavaluzzi, with a focus on making sustainable improvements to affordable housing and providing a better standard of living for their residents.

Bordainick's journey shows that entrepreneurial success can come from identifying a need and providing a solution that serves both customers and investors.

In this episode, Jason Bordainick speaks about his decision-making experience and entrepreneurship. He discusses the strong sense of connection he feels to UVA's culture. He also discusses how he’s found a sense of community through athletics and the McIntire school

And in case you’re wondering, Bordainick's interest in entrepreneurship dates back to his childhood, where he was always fascinated with the idea of starting a company. He started a business during the dot-com bubble in 2000, until later navigating the challenges of raising capital during the bust and founding Hudson Valley Property Group.

Throughout this 40-minute conversation, Bordainick emphasizes the importance of finding the right partner and gaining experience along the way. He also touches on the negative perceptions surrounding affordable housing and how his company is working to change them. For aspiring entrepreneurs, Bordainick advises that businesses are built around solving a problem and making something better!

    Episode Highlights:

    • Identifying a need and providing a solution that serves both the customers and the investors is the recipe for entrepreneurial success.
    • Finding a good partner is crucial to success in business.
    • Balancing academics with social activities and extracurricular pursuits can lead to success both in and out of the classroom.
    • Building relationships with professors and alumni can lead to valuable opportunities after graduation.
    • Starting a business during a downturn can be challenging, but it's possible to bootstrap your way to profitability.
    • Businesses are built around solving a problem and making something better.

Matt Belcher - Founder of Caltier Inc - Prop tech platform

Matt Belcher is a serial entrepreneur who has built a number of successful businesses over his career. Matt moved to the USA around 10 years ago, and has subsequently launched a new business called CalTier, which is a prop tech company which is seeking to change the way that people around the world invest into Real Estate and other asset classes.

CalTier is an SEC regulated investment platform providing access for private investors to get exposure to a variety of investment opportunities with an initial focus on the “multi-family” blocks, or what we would call in the UK blocks of apartments. Their proposition is to acquire the assets, renovate the properties, then re-gear the leases, increasing the revenues that the assets generate. The team have successfully acquired a number of these assets and have successfully exited one project at the date of writing, ahead of schedule.

Matt has a vision that CalTier realty will go on to become a diversified investment platform for retail investors and they are rapidly securing increasing numbers of private investors through a variety of different marketing methods and approaches.

Ed Talks - Solo Episode - Sorry for the rant... 'Sold Subject to Contract', let's discuss.

    Sorry for the rant...
    1. Does the public even know what SSTC means??!
    2. Should it be illegal to put SSTC (sold subject to contract) in tiny letters - on boards etc.??
    3. Should we go back to u/o still showing and u/o not showing?
    4. Is it a tool for agents to pump up listings at the expense of wasting buyer time?
    5. Is it not endemic of the whole system being out of kilter?
