    Psalm 26 - Integrity

    Psalm 26 - Integrity

Vindicate me, LORD, for I have led a blameless life;  I have trusted in the LORD and have not faltered. Psalms 26:1

Have you ever been persecuted, but it was completely unjust? Jesus and David have both experienced this in bucket loads. False claims. Lies. Character assassination. These are all things the greats of the Bible have experienced. I know I struggle to handle it well. What it comes down to is integrity. Do I have it and do I know the claims are false? In Psalm 26, David believed his integrity was intact and went directly to God for help and vindication. Charles Spurgeon writes,
"When the wicked can use no other weapons, they always have their quivers full of slanderous reports. Let us learn, here, that the best of men must expect to be misrepresented and to have the worst of crimes laid to their charge. Let us learn, also, from the example of David, to carry our case to the highest court at once, not to meddle with the lower courts of earth, but to go at once to the Court of King’s Bench in Heaven and there plead our cause before the Eternal Throne."

Psalm 26 - The integrity of Jesus

Psalm 26 - The integrity of Jesus

    Vindicate me, LORD, for I have led a blameless life;
I have trusted in the LORD and have not faltered. Psalms 26:1

Psalm 26 is about integrity. David begins and ends this psalm with his integrity. He claims “integrity” in verse 1 and commits himself to “integrity” in verse 11. This focus on integrity follows naturally from the penetrating psalms that come before it.

If we preach this psalm without Christ, we end up moralizing. All we can do is tell people to try harder, work harder, and do more. But we know we can’t possibly be good enough to have the integrity that will survive God’s penetrating, painful testing. The psalmist says,” If you, O LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?” (Psalm 130:3). If we apply Psalm 26 without Christ, we load a backpack of religion onto our shoulders that will not bring us any closer to God.
In fact, I have waited, dreaded even, praying this Psalm because I know I can not say any of it about me!

But if we see that Psalm 26 is ultimately about Christ, then we preach the gospel. Jesus is the true Man of Integrity. Jesus is the one man who lived up to Psalm 26 and fulfilled it completely. He had nothing to hide—God tested him at the cross, and he was found blameless. Jesus had nothing in common with the wicked—he praised God in the congregation of God’s people (Psalm 22:22; Hebrews 2:12). He had nothing to fear—God did not sweep his life away with the wicked but brought him back from the dead.
If this Jesus is your Savior, then your feet stand on level ground with him. Your life is joined together with his. His blameless integrity is counted as yours. The Spirit of the true Man of Integrity is within you, helping you to obey. His life is within you. You have nothing to fear.

Join me in praying Psalm 26 and be encouraged!

Psalm 26: 700 Seconds in a Psalm of Thanksgiving

Psalm 26: 700 Seconds in a Psalm of Thanksgiving

Giving thanks can be hard to do, especially when life is not easy. Even in the most difficult of times we have blessings from God that can lead us to thanksgiving.  Psalms of thanksgiving remind us of what God has done so that we give thanks in every circumstance.

In this psalm, the circumstances of being mis-identified, mis-understood, and mis-judged are still occasions for giving thanks because of what the LORD does in purifying, posturing, and planting us.

SNS 054: Praising God Is to Draw Closer to Him. Psalm 26, Psalm Tuesday

SNS 054: Praising God Is to Draw Closer to Him. Psalm 26, Psalm Tuesday

In today’s Psalm, I heard something very cool. Here we hear a song of praise that involves the Psalmist asking God to refine his emotions, character, and mind. Praising God, asking God to refine him even further, and this because God’s kindness and graciousness are his focus. What an amazing thing! That trust in God will lead to asking for an even deeper connection with him. And doesn’t this remind you of the Greatest Command ever given, to love God with our heart, soul, and mind?

Well…? Hello. My name is Charles, Charles Yerkes and this is Psalm Tuesday here on the Simple Not Shallow Podcast. Psalm Tuesday is a series in which, each Tuesday, we will listen to a Psalm being read in a manner that honors their original use as part of a worship service. In this episode, we are reading Psalm 26.
