Do we pick pundits by celebrity or by capability? The case of Rugby Union

Many pundits have become such long-standing features on certain networks’ sports coverage, that they are in effect the face of the program and are widely marketed to garner interest. But although their famous faces may attract fans that know them to the broadcast, do they give the best possible analysis?

My guest today ruffled a few feathers in late March this year when he penned an article criticising the analytical performance of the pundits on BBC and ITV’s coverage of the Six Nations. In doing so, he raised some important questions about what we might be missing by not giving those key minutes of airtime to people who may not be famous or even former players, but whose profession and core skill set is game analysis.

In this episode, Ben Nurse and I discuss how some seemingly impervious pundits have become complacent, relying on anecdotes of past glory, and failing to stay up to date with the trends and strategies of the modern game. Ben also argues in favour of incorporating more data-savvy analysts, describes how punditry would benefit from being more inclusive, and showcases the miraculous rise of my go-to source of rugby evaluation, Squidge Rugby’s Robbie Owen.

Hvorfor valgte han Sunderland frem for bl.a.

Archana Jain on purpose-driven communication, telling good stories, and why PR matters

Archana Jain on purpose-driven communication, telling good stories, and why PR matters

In this episode of Out of the Clouds, host Anne Muhlethaler reconnects with Archana Jain, an accomplished PR and communications professional, and the founder of PR Pundit, one of India’s top integrated communications firms. Archana has been at the forefront of her industry since her early days in the field and is widely recognised as a leading personality in PR, communication and media. She has been acknowledged as India’s top 100 PR communications professionals, as well as among India’s 50 Most Influential Women in Indian Media, Marketing & Advertising (2019, 2020 & 2021) and featured in the “Top 100 Influential Game Changers List.”

Anne and Archana collaborated a few years ago, and got to know each other, back when Anne was heading global communications for French shoe designer Christian Louboutin.

Over the course of this conversation, Archana tells the story of her beginnings in PR, how she went from consulting into working towards consumer-focused communication, to building her company and creating meaningful programs for the right audiences.

She talks to Anne about why public relations still matters today, how it’s imperative for brands to be telling authentic stories and why PR is a long game - not a quick win, and current challenges given that it’s not an age-old profession. They also discuss changes in the media landscape and the rise of purpose-driven communications and community advocacy, in the age of social media.

Archana also offers her thoughts on what it’s been like to be a woman at the head of her own business, how the landscape changed in the past twenty years, but also how she chose to  integrate flexibility and WFH capabilities for her team since 2004 - and how satisfying it’s been for her to be able to help women balance their personal and professional commitments.

You’ll probably notice a loud peacock (or two) in the background, as some were roaming behind Archana’s home office during the interview. A good way to set the scene for this warm and in-depth interview with this influential entrepreneur. Happy listening!

    Fake vs. Truth vs. "Cailyn"

    Fake vs. Truth vs. "Cailyn"

Welcome to Episode 65 (Season 2, Episode 15)!  Mark & Casey have missed you and they are back on their bs!  Painted Trash is back with an all new episode!  Life happens and after a couple weeks of life interrupting routine, Mark & Casey are back with a new weekly episode! So grab your port vintage because here we go!

In this week's Pick-up, Casey is giving us the update from the moving-in front! Who doesn't know what moving is like?!  Finally all moved in with Miss Jeffrey. Is it all warm and fuzzy??  Then Mark is talking about a whirlwind road trip over 48 hours for a surprise.  It was a success but what was it for??

Then in this week's Mid-Section, the recent Facebook Board decision to extend the HyrdroxycholorQueen's ban on the social media platform has everyone talking. Is the ban about the incitement of violence (aka the Insurrection on January 6th, 2021)?  Is it about the spreading of mis-information and lies? The Board seems to think it's the first, but The Boys are wondering why not the later?!  What is the role of social media and accurate, fact based information when it comes to news? Are they doing enough? Should they be doing more? What responsibility do they have to monitor the information put on their platform and to whom are they responsible?  Mark & Casey have some thoughts on the subject.  How about you??

Next up is this week's Trash Talk!  In this week's hilarious, jam packed segment kicks off with Joy Reid' rebuttal to "Tuck-ums" followed by the latest embarrasment from one "judge" who is angry and follks are speculating she was perhaps under the influence (allegedly!) while on air--- again. Next, a councilwoman who compares her plight to go out in public without a mask to an icon within the civil rights movement,\. Then a new candidate has entered the race for a gubernatorial candidate and let's just say she is getting painted for quite a bit. Lastly, a woman got more than she ordered from her food delivery driver who seemed to be doing some painting of their own of their customer who ordered some treats from a certain fast food establishment.

In this week's recommendation, Mark is sharing about his latest binge of a true crime sort and Casey is giving us the tea on a new docuseries just released.

These Boys have missed you and they are bringing you all the tea this week to make up for lost time!  This one is sure to have you thinking and laughing!  It's a goodie -- so pour yourself some of that tasty port vintage and get ready for Painted Trash!

    =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Let The Boys of Painted Trash know your thoughts on this week's topics and episode! What street festivals do you attend? Do you like street fests? What is your favorite festival??

Putting Pundits in Context & Learning From Labour's Loss

Putting Pundits in Context & Learning From Labour's Loss
9 May 2016 - This week on Hopping Mad we had two guests for an extended interview which we dubbed our Pundit Primer. Greg Dworkin (DemFromCT at dKos and Twitter) and Driftglass ( his own blog and Mr_Electrico on Twitter). Greg starts most weekday mornings on the popular Netroots Radio show and podcast, Kagro in the Morning with David Waldman. Driftglass joins Bluegal on the podcast The Professional Left, which also airs on Netroots Radio. These are both shows I can honestly say I never miss and I encourage you to give them a listen if you have not done so in the past. Both Greg and Driftglass are long-time pundit watchers and they both put various pundits into context and make us laugh. Just perfect. [Note: at the bottom of this blog post we have included some links Greg sent us which evidence the work of some of those pundits we discuss.] Will took a look at the Scottish election results which show what might happen to the Democratic Party if we decide to slide to the right. Scottish Labour is in trouble because they aren't fighting for the things the Scottish people actually care about. Scotland was once a country run by Labour with its largest city, Glasgow, called the "Citadel of Socialism" by pundits. But the red and gold "Vote Labour" signs have been replaced with the SNP's black on yellow Clootie Dumpling symbol. Glasgow's constituencies are held almost entirely by the SNP. Labour has fallen into third place as the battle in Scotland becomes one between the SNP and the Tories. Meanwhile, the SNP won a historic third term as the government of Scotland but lost their overall majority despite their vote share increasing. That's because the D'hondt method of vote counting is intentionally designed to prevent any one party from having an overall majority. However, the SNP were also the victims of inflated expectations and that's where another lesson applies to our own country. The Democratic Party looks as if it will sail to victory in November. But can similar inflated expectations hurt us here? Carrots! - Arliss

    Guru Harkrishan and the Brahman

    Guru Harkrishan and the Brahman
Guru Harkrishan was only 5 years old when he received the Guruship. Once a very learned Hindu high priest came to see him. He thought the Guru was only a little boy who couldn't know as much as he did. So he challenged the Guru to interpret the Gita with him. Guru Harkrishan ji did something the Brahman didn't expect. He didn't just talk, he showed the man that God is in every one....
