#138 Vermont's Second Lowest Obesity Rate: Here's Why

#138 Vermont's Second Lowest Obesity Rate: Here's Why

This episode focuses on Vermont's notably low obesity rate, the second lowest in the United States out of all the mainland states.

The discussion begins with some context and then expands on the state's outdoor lifestyle, highlighting how its natural beauty and terrain encourage an active lifestyle among residents. Vermont's cities and towns are praised for their walkability, contributing to the population's overall physical health.

The episode explores the health-conscious mindset of Vermonters, who prioritise wellness and healthy eating, influenced partly by the state's small population density that allows for close-knit communities with access to fresh, local foods. Economic factors are also examined, notably Vermont's lower poverty rate, which correlates with better access to quality food and health services. Environmental consciousness in Vermont is also linked.

A fun fact about Montpelier, the U.S. capital with no McDonald's, wraps up the episode, symbolising Vermont's unique approach to community health and diet.

Figuring out nutritional strategies and understanding more about more about the quality of the food we are eating: An interview with Marty Kendall

I had a great chat with Marty Kendall today. We share a common interest in the nutrient quality of the food we eat. Marty has spent years understanding and collating information on the foods that provide the best quality of nutrition for the calories that they contain.

With his background in civil engineering, he has brought his ability to analyse complex data into the nutritional world. He began with a strong interest in improving the health of his family. His wife is a type-1 diabetic and his son was recently diagnosed with type-1.

His initial goal was to figure out the best nutritional strategies for his family. He is now sharing these with the world through his optimising nutrition programme. He provides mini-courses on micronutrients and a data-driven fasting challenge and explains these in more detail during this podcast. Marty is really making a difference in the nutrition world and helping us all understand more about the quality of the food we are eating.

I want to say special thanks to Marty's wife for being a guinea pig and allowing her data to be shared publicly to help others. This is real-life stuff and provides invaluable insights.

60 Seconds for Time Out Tuesday: I’ve Hit the Wall. Now What? Part 1 of 4

60 Seconds for Time Out Tuesday: I’ve Hit the Wall. Now What? Part 1 of 4

Hello to you listening in Charlottesville, Virginia!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Time Out Tuesday and your host, Diane Wyzga

Maybe like me you know how it feels to hit the wall. Fatigue, loss of energy, negativity, or lack of enthusiasm when you’ve used up whatever it is that’s been holding you up. Maybe you ask yourself: Does anybody care? What is this for? Who is this for? What’s the point? You have two options: stand and stagnate or figure out how to move over, under, around, or through the wall.

How do I do it? I step back. I go for a walk - maybe a few walks. I think about a time when I was working as a shepherd on a fiber farm on the outskirts of Charlottesville, Virginia. While there I met a fellow named Joe who raised organic goats for meat. Many of his customers came from the D.C Beltway area; they were quite happy to pay good money for quality food.

But Joe hit the wall selling goat meat from his farm. He wanted to venture out and educate people about the value of eating what he raised: food that’s organic, sustainable, humanely harvested, no junk in the feed, and lots of pasture to graze. But he didn’t know how to begin. Or where to begin. Now what? Join us tomorrow for Part 2.

You’re invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, I hope you’ll subscribe, share a nice shout out on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time! The Human That Forever Influenced My Career with Bob Seebohar 029

If you have ever worked with us, are working with us, or will work with us, you are working with our amazing guest by proxy. This episode was special. I had the opportunity to thank the dude who completely shifted my career forever. Bob Seebohar did a call eight years ago talking about "Metabolic Efficiency" and how to burn fat as fuel as an endurance athlete by embracing dietary fat and reducing carbohydrates. At the time, it blew my mind. Bob was one of the first US Triathlon Level III Coaches in the country. He now has a bunch of letters behind his name, and runs several successful companies, including eNRG, which is his flagship company. He also makes delicious snacks that fit his program with his company Birota Foods! This was an absolute honor and I will be forever grateful for Bob and his work.
