    Embracing the Mundane Artist Life

    Embracing the Mundane Artist Life

As artist and performers, we get to do some pretty exciting work. We tour the world, perform on the biggest stages, and get to create work that does not exist in the world. These however are the highlights of the career but not necessarily the norm.

In this episode, Brandon talks about the mundane life of the performer and how we can stay engaged in our work. The life of an artist is challenging and dancers need to check in with how their needs are being met and if/when to find fulfillment elsewhere.
How can we keep our work interesting, continue to learn, and recognize the benefits of the work we need to do?

Blindsided: What To Do When An Employee Suddenly Quits

Blindsided: What To Do When An Employee Suddenly Quits

Picture this. You’re in the middle of a productive team meeting, when all of a sudden, someone at the table quits. No, not after the fact. No, not a resignation letter. No, not a private conversation. Just, “I’m OUT!...” in the middle of the meeting. Yikes! What would you do? What would you say? Though you may not have faced this abrupt of a situation, any leader that’s been in the game for a while has been blindsided by someone resigning, stepping away, or quitting. A listener writes in this week about this surprising challenge, and we walk through the best way to handle it!

    "You Should Quit"

    "You Should Quit"

It's really hard for dancers to know when to move on. It's also a challenge for them to have the courage to make a big change after working so hard to achieve a life long dream. Most of the time, the picture we build in our head isnt the reality when we book the job. This is when we have to get honest and take action that is going to be the most beneficial to our physical, emotional, and mental health.

In this episode, Brandon breaks down the differences in  dance jobs and how we don't always know what we want until we experience it ourselves. What are the signs that it's time to quit? How do we pivot to a different job or career all together? When does one bad day start to add up and become a bad week, month, or year?

Episode 27: Demystifying the Idaho National Guard
We’ve all heard of the Idaho National Guard. Often those serving in the guard are our neighbors and peers at work. But many of us are confused about what they actually do, and are unaware of the huge impact that they make on our community. Did you know that they are the fourth highest employer in the state?! In this episode we sit down with Brig. Gen. Timothy J. Donnellan - the Commander of the Idaho Air National Guard and Assistant Adjutant General, Air, Gowen Field in Boise. Shane and guest host Taylor Walker (who served as Idaho National Guard PR and photojournalist) talk with the General about what exactly that Idaho National Guard offers to our community. Episode 24: Double date with the Maxeys!

Episode 24: Double date with the Maxeys!
We have a lot of pretty interesting couples in the Treasure Valley, and we thought it was about time we get to know some of them. Basically a double date… in the studio! This episode we meet with Corbin and Sam Maxey! Corbin is an exotic animal expert and local celebrity. You may recognize him from the Tonight Show, the Today show, Martha Stewart and many more national appearances. He has huge YouTube and Tiktok presences, keeping people entertained with raising his animals. Sam Maxey is known throughout the Valley as the Genius behind “Snake River Wine Tours” - recently named USA Today Top Ten Wine Tour. Shane and I are huge fans. As is everyone that goes on one! We dig into this couple’s dynamic and ask some of our own burning questions. For example, what it’s like to marry a man who raises exotic animals for a living? How is constantly driving drunk people around the Treasure Valley? And what really is inside the Barbacoa men’s bathroom? Enjoy!

    Episode 23: Fireside Chat

    Episode 23: Fireside Chat

On this episode we’re imagining ourselves at home, siting around the fire and letting the conversation flow. We chat about marriage, podcasting, Natalie’s really ugly leggings, trying to catch each other cheating, and what triggers Shane to cry like a small child. Also learn about Shane new social media girlfriend. Laughter and disagreements ensue. Enjoy.

The Quickie: How To Know When It's Time To Quit

The Quickie: How To Know When It's Time To Quit

We’ve all heard the saying “quitters never win and winners never quit”…it’s a mindset instilled in us from an early age, but is it *really* true? Spoiler alert: no, it is not. Letting something go when it’s no longer right for you isn’t a weakness or a failure. Be it a job, a relationship or even a habit, making the difficult decision to quit something can be the ultimate act of self-preservation.

Seriously, we’re big fans of moving on from jobs or situations that don’t serve us, and quitting has led to some of our biggest successes!

We’re living through The Great Resignation right now with North Americans quitting their jobs at record high rates, and if we’ve collectively learned anything from the last two chaotic years, it’s that our BS tolerance is at an all-time low, and we deserve to start prioritizing the things that bring us joy, growth and fulfillment. #YOLO!

So, this week we’re flipping the script on quitting and redefining success for ourselves. There’s only 24-hours in a day, let’s make sure they’re filled with the stuff that matters.

    Join us as we discuss:

    • Redefining the narrative around quitting
    • Why society is entering "The Great Resignation"
    • How to know when it's time to quit
    • Our biggest lessons for letting go
    • What quitting can mean for your career and for creating new opportunities
    • Choosing yourself over toxic situations
    • How to quit well and leave on a high note

We hope this episode helps guide your decisions, and empowers you to find success on your own terms. You got this!

Episode 21: Getting creepy with the Old Idaho Penitentiary.

Episode 21: Getting creepy with the Old Idaho Penitentiary.
Like crime podcasts? Interested in Idaho history? Fascinated (like the rest of us) in the Old Idaho Penitentiary? In this episode we have a conversation with Skye and Anthony of the Behind Gray Walls Podcast. These local historians work in the historic Old Idaho Penitentiary and specialize in stories of some of the most infamous prisoners who resided there. They regale us with a few of their favorite stories, along with some of the creepy paranormal experiences there. We also talk about the fine line between civilian and prisoner, and the danger of labeling a person for a single mistake. These historians are dedicating their days to making sure the entire story of the individuals who spent time in the penitentiary are told. It’s a interesting and fun listen to be sure.

Episode 11: BONUS BUBBLE - Quitting a Job

Episode 11: BONUS BUBBLE - Quitting a Job
This episode is the first in a series of off-week mini-conversations called "Bonus Bubbles". In these we'll touch topics not necessarily tied to the Treasure Valley. In this episode, Shane talks about a recent life event of quitting his job (after over 10 years!), some thoughts on employer-employee relationships, and offers a few lessons-learned. If you're considering a similar career shift, you may find something useful in this one.

Knowing When To Give Up (and How it Can Help Your Business Grow!)

Knowing When To Give Up (and How it Can Help Your Business Grow!)

Knowing when to give up is often a challenge for business owners. But there are numerous benefits of quitting when it’s clearly appropriate to do so.

When we talk about quitting, it could be in terms of a staff member leaving, ending a project, or quitting a job. In all of these cases, it’s important to recognize the point at which things just aren’t going to get any better.

Do you ever find yourself in the situation where something is missing? When this happens, quitting is often the best course of action because otherwise you’re just going to continue to hurt your business.

The problem, however, is that we have sunk cost bias. As humans we are biased toward focusing on losses rather than the benefits of quitting something. A great example is that you have a staff member and they're not doing a great job. By the time you realize it's a problem, you hesitate because you have all of this money and time invested in that person. In this case, knowing when to give up on that employee is crucial.

When you finally let the person go, it's usually a relief for everyone. Trying to push things forward due to the fear of loss is not a great strategy.

Quitting is not going to feel good. You're going to feel like you made a big mistake. But you need to look at it as a learning experience. Listen to that gut feeling. After all, why be wrong for longer?

Knowing when to give up isn’t a skill that comes naturally. But it’s important to recognize the benefits of quitting so that when the time comes, you’re ready to embrace it and move on.
