When Murder is NOT a Crime~The Unsolved Murder of Race Car Driver Chris Trickle

When Murder is NOT a Crime~The Unsolved Murder of Race Car Driver Chris Trickle

On February 9, 1997, 24-year-old race car driver, Chris Trickle, left his home in Las Vegas around 9 p.m. to play tennis with a friend at a lighted court.  As he drove over the freeway, a car drove alongside him and fired shots into his convertible car hitting him between the eyes. He landed in a coma, leading to a slow rehabilitation, but died from complications of his wounds on March 25, 1998, 409 days after the shooting.  Even if his murder is solved, the killer will not be charged.  The only justice in this case has been Chris's parents changing the ‘year and a day’ rule in Nevada.  Race car driver, Quentin Haley, joins us for this special unsolved episode!

Late To Grid: E27 - Reed Kryder Former IMSA & SCCA Racer - Driver Coach & Race Shop Owner
We sit down with Reed Kryder from Kryder Racing and boy did we learn a lot!  What a background!

Reed's a former IMSA and SCCA driver who now coaches aspiring racers and owns Kyder Racing which provides car set up services, offers an arrive and drive program, and builds cars for customers.

We talk about Reed getting his old GTU car back on track for a vintage race, Reed's background at Goodyear, and get his insights into better driving.  Reed is responsible for the Test & Tune events at Nelson Ledges Road Course which offers a street car day and race car day each month.

    Reed's advice on getting better?
Work to get consistent and identify where your issues are (braking, knowing the apex, driving line, etc).  He also suggests running 4-6 laps, make adjustments and repeat.  Plus, he shares so much more!  Check your tires after a session - which are hotter?  Hotter tires are the ones that are sliding on the track.

Reed says, a lot of racing is passion - what's your passion?  Go and do that.

Veteran Race Car Driver Matt Plumb on Mental Practice and Preparing to Win

Veteran Race Car Driver Matt Plumb on Mental Practice and Preparing to Win

"I've driven races where my power steering has gone out and the diver cooling system went out and it's 130 degrees, and if you did that for about five minutes, you'd say I gotta quit. But I had to do it for an hour. And the only way to get through it is just keep taking breaths and focusing on, 'What's the next step? What's the next step? What's the next step?'"

Today's guest is Matt Plumb, a professional race car driver.

If I asked you about car racing, you’d probably mention your favorite scene from Ford versus Ferrari with Matt Damon and Christian Bale or Days of Thunder Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. Other than what we see in movies, most people don’t know a whole lot about the sport of car racing and what it takes to be a successful professional driver. As sports nerds, Bryan and I were treated to an inside look, not only into the sport of car racing, but more importantly, the mind of a professional race car driver. Car racing is about so much more than driving fast and trying not to crash. In fact, everything we talked during our conversation with Matt felt completely relatable, even though our background is in a completely different sport. We discovered so many parallels between race car drivers and runners that at times, it felt like we were talking about the same sport.

Matt highlights his story with insight into what makes up his winning mindset, including why not quitting is quite possibly the biggest motivator that got him through his toughest moments. There’s no mistaking how relevant the lessons Matt has learned from twenty years of racing are to all of us. We really believe this conversation will inspire you to be ‘all in’ when it comes to going after what you want in life.

Juan Manuel Correa is an Ecuadorian-American racing driver who races under an American license in FIA Formula 2. 2019 was Correa's first full Formula 2 season. On August 31, 2019, Correa was involved in a serious crash with Anthoine Hubert on the second lap of the feature race of the 2019 Spa-Francorchamps FIA Formula 2 round, Belgium. Hubert subsequently died from his injuries, and Correa has been in full recovery mode from his injuries since the crash.

How he got started in racing at a young age in Ecuador

Why pressure and adrenaline is what drew Juan to the sport

    His race day routine

Why visualizations are non-negotiable when prepping for a race

Why Formula 1 & Formula 2 are one of the most exclusive sports in the world and only a select group will every race

What it’s like driving a car that goes in excess of up to 320km/h+

Why racing is so much more than just getting in a fast car and driving - you need to be adaptable at such high speeds and factor in weather, speed, tire degradation, temperature, the different race circuits, and much more

Types of training racing drivers need to go through and why it’s more mental than physical

Behind the scenes of what goes into a race weekend from a drivers perspective

Why Baku (Azerbaijan) and Monaco are Juan’s most challenging races on the circuit

Competition in the field and among your teammate

What it’s like being in a massive life-altering crash

Getting put into a coma and the road to recovery, including making a decision whether to amputate your leg

    Tony Kanaan
Today we're talking to Tony Kanaan, who is an Indy car driver and was a team-mate of mine. So for me, I was really interested in hearing about him as a person in his life. That's just stuff you don't get into when you're friends. You just kind of going about your life and your work. But I really wanted to dive into that. And so we did. And he had a lot of really great perspective on the challenges of not just the job itself, because it's hard.  But really what I wanted to know about his life. So we talked about the balance of that and how to grow as a human being to being a happier person. Please enjoy.
