Episode 108 | Growing Up Black In White "See Me, Hear Me" | Guest: Kevin Hofmann

Episode 108 | Growing Up Black In White "See Me, Hear Me" | Guest: Kevin Hofmann
This episode I speak with Kevin Hofmann, The Author of Growing Up Black In White. He shares his personal story of being Bi-Racial, adapted at the age of 3 months into an all white family and the dynamics surrounded around the family and within the family being different.

Kevin shares is WHY for writing the book and what he does to help others in understanding how to bridge the gap of racial divide.

Growing Up Black in White is author Kevin Hofmann's gift to the American public seeking answers to so many questions about what it is to be raised in a racially diverse household. Born to a white mother and black father in Detroit in 1967, only weeks before the terrible race riots that brought a major city to its knees, the author was taken to a foster home and then adopted by a white minister and his wife, already the parents of three biological children. In this fascinating memoir, Hofmann reveals the difficulties and joys of being part of this family, particularly during a time and in a location where acceptance was tentative and emotions regarding race ran high and hot. Hofmann shares with readers the pressures and joys of being part of a family that navigated through tumultuous waters, and came out the victors in an old and oft-fought battle. This is a book that offers insight, humor, and plenty of hope.

Ep. 7: The past, future and present of prejudice

The poet Maya Angelou once wrote, "Prejudice is a burden that confuses the past, threatens the future, and renders the present inaccessible." Hearing these words, how can we use them as a framework to unpack the state of the world today?

Ep. 6: Owning strength and femininity

Ep. 6: Owning strength and femininity

The reality of sexism in America – along with the reality of centuries-long systemic racism in the U.S. – has often forced Black women to mask their true feelings. Women are forced to show hope in times of fear; restraint in times of rage; strength in times of pain. Instead of shying away from the stereotype of the angry Black women, these women are owning their strength and redefining femininity. Guests: Kristin Scott, Deanna West-Torrence, Kathryn Bartlett, Marie Holbrook, Christina Beauford and Amanda Stanfield. Moderated by Richland Source Engagement & Solutions Editor Brittany Schock. 419 Barbershop has partnered with Richland Source, Mankind Murals Inc. and DRM Productions to bring the "Shop Talk" series to life.

Ep. 5: Mothers raising Black men

Ep. 5: Mothers raising Black men

Four of the women in the chairs at 419 Barbershop are mothers of Black boys – children and adults – and the toll of raising and caring for them in today’s racial climate is heavy. While America is still reeling from the death of Minneapolis resident George Floyd, these women said Black men have feared police brutality for decades, and their motherly fears are deep-rooted. Guests: Kristin Scott, Deanna West-Torrence, Kathryn Bartlett, Marie Holbrook, Christina Beauford and Amanda Stanfield. Moderated by Richland Source Engagement & Solutions Editor Brittany Schock. 419 Barbershop has partnered with Richland Source, Mankind Murals Inc. and DRM Productions to bring the "Shop Talk" series to life.

Ep. 4: The masks women wear

Ep. 4: The masks women wear

What does it mean to be a strong woman in 2020? As protests against systemic racism and police brutality continue across the nation, six women talked about a different kind of mask – the kind needed to survive in America, pandemic or not. Guests: Kristin Scott, Deanna West-Torrence, Kathryn Bartlett, Marie Holbrook, Christina Beauford and Amanda Stanfield. Moderated by Richland Source Engagement & Solutions Editor Brittany Schock. 419 Barbershop has partnered with Richland Source, Mankind Murals Inc. and DRM Productions to bring the "Shop Talk" series to life.

Ep. 2: Unpacking the Black Lives Matter movement

Ep. 2: Unpacking the Black Lives Matter movement

What exactly is the Black Lives Matter movement, and why is it such an argument online?

Hosted by Damien Beauford. Moderated by Larry Phillips. Guests: Reggie Gamble, Sarah Leonhardt, Micah Pelkey, Tom Roepke, Cheryl Cates, Elijah Torrence, Jay Allred, Khyyam Crawford.

419 Barbershop has partnered with Richland Source, Mankind Murals Inc. and DRM Productions to bring the "Shop Talk" series to life.

Ep. 1: Young, black men in America

Ep. 1: Young, black men in America

What is the perception of the young, black male in America?

This emotionally-charged conversation moderated by Richland Source editor Larry Phillips is the second in an ongoing series of video discussions on race fostered by 419 Barbershop owner Damien Beauford. Today's discussion came less than two days after Rayshard Brooks, a 27-year-old Black man, was shot and killed by White police officer Garrett Rolfe after a routine sobriety check in Atlanta. Rolfe was fired after the incident and could face murder charges.

Guests: Reggie Gamble, Sarah Leonhardt, Micah Pelkey, Tom Roepke, Cheryl Cates, Elijah Torrence, Jay Allred and Khyyam Crawford.

Episode 33 | Stand Up and Claim Some Space | Guest: Eliza Vancort

Episode 33 | Stand Up and Claim Some Space | Guest: Eliza Vancort
Eliza VanCort, CEO | Mother | Speaker | Communicator | Belly Laugher. WHAT I DO I own a communication consulting firm, VanCort Consulting

I reached out to Eliza VanCort some weeks ago to talk about her book, Titled A Woman's Guide to Claiming Space. Our conversation lead into a deep talk about many of the issues we face today in America.

This episode was recorded prior to the recent protests around police violence and killing(s) that have been taking place. These are the authentic conversations we need more of and are often times not willing to be heard by everyone on all sides.

We can all agree change needs to happen, Change is happening slowly and is going to take everyone shedding old beliefs and understanding true humanity.

In a spiritual reality we are all connected, race does not play a factor. It is my hope that you listen with an open mind, willing to understand and process the information.
When we come from a place of EGO it becomes difficult to relate to others.

Growth in 2020, it is time to challenge your old beliefs that have been passed down from generation to generation. Divided we fall, but together we can stand tall.

The U-N-I-T-E-D states, think about that for a moment, United! it does not state only if you are a certain race.

We hear so much about the history of the country, Do more research, do you own research go way back, as far back as you need to to help paint the picture.
    Thank you,
    Shanta G.
