Seasoned and fresh-faced artists (of every genre) discuss how to make creativity work within the complexities and challenges of adult life. Co-hosts Jen Harris + Vanessa Aricco, both working writers, unveil the secrets and struggles of creative living in a rapid fire Capitalist society. One guest at a time, Jen + Vanessa ask, How Does Your Life Translate to Art?

P.S. I, Vanessa, hate the word "creatives" and I didn't mean to use it so much. Art, artists, writers, people, "creatives" barf, it's a marketing term that doesn't apply to the kind of work we are exploring here. <3

Episode 324: "The Craft" Mac & Cheese

Episode 324: "The Craft" Mac & Cheese

This episode we watch 1996's "The Craft." It's the cultural staple that served us "Ya scared Sarah?" "I bind you Nancy." and "These are my gifts!"  This was definitely the piece of media that made us want to call the corners. What would we do without it? We pair it with a California Cab Sauv from Witching Hour. Blessed be.

    Metacritic Score: 55/100

Movie Sync Notes: We watched "The Craft" on Amazon Video. We start "The Craft" 8:17 into the pod and push play on part two 1:04:13 into the pod.

The Craft (Justice for Fairuza Balk!)

The Craft (Justice for Fairuza Balk!)

This week Zach and Sloane unwrap 1999's American teen supernatural horror film: The Craft. This week's episode goes from light as a feather to stiff as a board as the duo discuss everything from how far you can throw semen to Sloane's current legal issues. The team discusses the hotness of 90's boys, the horrors of the patriarchy, and Fairuza Balk's tooth color. All that and much, much more on this week's episode of Mummy Dearest

096: Remember: no obstacles, only challenges. | Groove (2000)

Has anyone ever heard of this film? It's like a map point if you're in the know. Dust off your UFO pants, candy bracelets and glow sticks cause we're going back to the start of the interwebs and the tail end of communicating without cell phones. Immediately this film has the cred cause DIGWEED! Me and Jai talk our own raver stories of the late 90s, the (great at the time but actually awful) fashion, and the MUSIC!

Off topic rants include: what we think of the new Matrix 4 trailer, wanting more raver documentaries, and more celeb gossip only I care about.

BTW 39: 9 of Swords – Why Nightmares Are Good For You with guest Rachel True

BTW 39: 9 of Swords – Why Nightmares Are Good For You with guest Rachel True

The 9 of Swords is often known as "the nightmare card”, referring to the  things that wake you up in the night and keep you tossing and turning. You might be obsessing, like: Did I do something wrong? How could this person do this thing to me? What if I never become economically stable? What if I never find love? What if something horrible happens to someone in my family? The hamster keeps running its wheel. But there's a way out of the torment of this card. We can't wait to show you what it is!

Our guest today is Rachel True, a life-long tarot practitioner and actress whom you’ll know from her starring in the 90s version of The Craft, about a coven of young witches. She was also the lead on the TV show Half & Half, for which she was nominated for an NAACP award. Rachel just came out with a new tarot deck and guidebook called the True Heart Tarot, which we think you will LOVE.  Tune in to hear her deep wisdom on the 9 of Swords and so much more.

If you grew up in the nineties, at any point had an all black wardrobe, and ever had a friend who warned you about particular herbs because they could be used to put a love spell on you (hi Jennifer) then the odds are pretty good at some point you were very well acquainted with the 1996 film "The Craft".
It's about four high school girls who are very into magic, very bad at wearing their catholic school uniforms to regulation, and each have one very specific life problem that they decide to change with the practical application of magic. Of course, in any nineties movie, girls strive to get some kind of power and control in their lives and when they get it they go immediately insane and begin killing people and turning on each other (sigh). We all remember this movie (except Ben, who is a literal infant) but just how well do we remember it? Is it the "Whedonesque" girl power phenomenon that some people remember or is it "Whedonesque" in all the wrong ways? Jump in and let's find out!

    Points of Interest:
    Which element are you?
What's your favorite 90's fashion accessory?

    Jewel
The many thunderstorms of Los Angeles
90's Suicidal ideation and the "right way to commit suicide"
    Unrealistically barren magic shops
    Don't steal from local witches
We find out a lot about each other (everybody was a witch, except Jeremy who was a football player. TWIST!)
WHY IS EVERYBODY IN LOVE WITH CHRIS HOOKER?! HE'S THE WORST!
Large chunks of this plot don't make sense.
    So many snakes
Did The Craft change the ecosystem of Los Angeles?
This movie hates people experiencing homelessness and victims of abuse.

    ‘Orlando’ with Rachel True

    ‘Orlando’ with Rachel True

This week’s episode is a real treat because we get to talk to the wonderful and exuberant Rachel True. She has chosen a movie that really blew our hair back; Sally Potter’s fantastical romance, Orlando. Rachel begins the episode by detailing her journey to see this movie in the early ’90s by taking a bus across Los Angeles. Rachel goes on to elaborate on the difficulty of being a black female actor and the limited roles she gets offered. She also talks about how she was often forced to utilize a “hood” accent when auditioning, and how that may have lost her a part in Clueless. And lastly, Rachel opens up about her experience working on The Craft, and why she fights to get the same respect as the other members of the cast.
