The Reactionary Worldmaking of Counter-Insurgency, w/ Joseph Mackay | Ep. 172

What separates conservatives from reactionaries, and where do they converge? What are the politics inherent to counterinsurgency strategy? What does the popularity of counter-insurgency in the 21st century say about Democratic Party politics? How does small-war thinking unify counter-revolutionary monarchies with Edwardian imperialism with anti-communism? And where does David Petraeus fit into these questions?

All that and more in this wide-ranging conversation with Joseph Mackay, anchored in his award-winning book, The Counter-Insurgent Imagination: A New Intellectual History.

Ever had one of those "Monster in the Mirror" moments? You know, the ones where after screaming at the top of your lungs because your kid did something that made you livid, you end up in the bathroom, staring at your reflection in the mirror and asking yourself, "Who is THAT person?" That's definitely a Myggy Experience!

Becky Dozeman, a Licensed Social Worker and Therapist turned Life Coach, shares 5 steps to gaining control over the fight, flight, freeze response your amygdala is known for (in addition to highly entertaining detours loaded with Becky-isms).

Becky effuses energy, joy, and optimism as she shares her unique method on how you can respond when Myggy shows up. Her tips include:

    • understanding how our internal narrative impacts judgment and overwhelm
    • embracing the gift of your amygdala signifying that this moment means something
    • discovering the difference between shame and guilt
    • identifying exactly what you may need in the moment -- to get through the moment (hint:  Keep the humans alive!)

Episode 72: Indiana Sports Gambling, 3M's Flex and Seal Packaging, Google's Big Real Estate Investment, Healthy Company Cultures, Action vs. Intent, Reactionary Business Mindset, and Starting Small with Your Habits
Show Description: In today's current events, we talk about Indiana Sports Gambling and the next steps and locations where you can partake, 3M moving away from cardboard box packaging, Google's gigantic investment into Silicon Valley real estate, and Mark Cuban's interview with Inc.com on keys to retaining employees. In the real life experience section of the episode, we discuss how a small deeds can have monumental impacts on lives, what we can do to be more prepared to be a helping hand, and the relationship between intent and action. To conclude the episode, we dive into Gary V's "Crushing It" and what it means to have a reactionary business mindset, as well as James Clear's "Atomic Habits" and how starting small can increase your chances of forming a great habit. Show Highlights: 3:00-9:30: We give our weekend recap, analyzing Tim's "Wave Dance," and why cliff hangers are necessary for television shows. 9:30-13:30: Indiana was the 2nd state to legalize sports betting, so we discuss the next steps for Indiana Casinos. We get into the list of sports that will be in play, the casinos awarded licenses, and what the economic impact will be. 13:30-18:30: 3M is moving away from cardboard boxes and toward the "Flex and Seal" packaging for most of its shipping. We discuss the impact of this on the business and how companies are doing whatever they can to support the demand economy. 18:30-23:00: Google and other tech companies are investing back into the housing market in Silicon Valley. We talk about the Housing Trust Silicon Valley TECH Fund's impact on the community, and Slager talks about his dream charity. 23:00-31:30: Reflecting on a Mark Cuban interview with Inc.com, we analyze the 6 things companies must have in place to retain good employees. We also discuss how the internet has impacted employees and athletes to take control of their own destiny. 31:30-38:00: Tim talks about how a kind deed from the YMCA custodian impacted his entire week, and how we ourselves can be prepared to help someone in need. 38:00-44:00: We both analyze a thought that Slager had earlier this week about how "action" and "intent" are interrelated. We give our opinion on which of these two is more important. 44:00-47:30: Drawing from Gary V's "Crushing It," we talk about what reactionary business means, what you can do to study trends, and the future of business and voice. 47:30-53:00: We talk about the importance of starting small when developing new habits, and give you some examples of how you can implement this to your new goals.

Your Time Is Your Greatest Asset!

Your Time Is Your Greatest Asset!
We all have 24 hours a day but some of us seem to "cram" a lot more into that time. In reality some of us are just more effective at using the time we have than others do. Stop being reactionary with your time and proactively put the tasks that will get you to your destination into the time you have. You tell time what you will do with it instead of letting it tell you how to spend it.
