Paramount Pictures to revisit 'The Longest Yard' with a new remake

Paramount Pictures to revisit 'The Longest Yard' with a new remake
Paramount Pictures is set to take another shot at remaking the classic sports comedy-drama film The Longest Yard. The original 1974 version, which earned critical acclaim and an Oscar nomination, was a delicate balance of comedy and drama, starring Burt Reynolds as Paul "Wrecking" Crewe, a former football star facing a prison sentence. In 2005, a remake directed by Peter Segal, with Adam Sandler in the lead role, took a lighter, more comedic approach and featured a star-studded cast. Despite its commercial success, Sandler publicly confessed that the remake couldn't hold a candle to the original. Now, Paramount Pictures is giving it another go, led by Gunpowder & Sky’s Van Toffler and former MTV Films boss David Gale, with Rodney Barnes penning the script. The new iteration aims to bring a fresh perspective to this prison football story, offering a unique take on a classic narrative.

Evil Dead (2013) — One of the Greatest Remakes In History? — Episode 140

Evil Dead (2013) — One of the Greatest Remakes In History? — Episode 140

The idea to revisit the world of “Evil Dead” had been tossed around for years since “Army of Darkness” was released in 1992 but a direct sequel just never came together. That’s when the possibility of a remake started being discussed with original director Sam Raimi welcoming the idea as well as longtime friend and producer Robert Tapert.

The same couldn’t be said for original star Bruce Campbell, who bristled at the thought of remaking “Evil Dead,” especially if the film would just rehash what had already been done in the first three films. That’s when Raimi discovered a young filmmaker named Fede Alvarez, who landed on his radar thanks to an ambitious short film he made titled “Panic Attack.”

Raimi actually had an idea to develop that short film into a full length feature but the movie got locked up in development hell and that’s when he started talking to Alvarez about potentially rebooting “Evil Dead” with a new film. Alvarez and his writing partner penned the script, which ultimately got Campbell on board as well because this version of the movie didn’t introduce a new Ash but instead offered an entirely new kind of protagonist into the “Evil Dead” universe.

The finished product was a blood-soaked, horrifying update to the iconic franchise that still featured a wayward group of young people traveling to the woods where they encountered the Book of the Dead…

In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to make sure the basement door stays locked and the nail gun is put away as we review the 2013 remake of “Evil Dead”…

    TUI's Covid journey

    TUI's Covid journey

Liz Edwards, Head of Communications at TUI, tells Daisy about repatriating thousands of customers and why IT systems were actually the biggest challenge that TUI faced when Covid hit. This insight into what goes on behind the scenes at a holiday company was totally fascinating.

    Some key lessons from Liz:

    • Put the customer at the heart of whatever you are doing. This is an oldie but a goodie. And it can mean challenging some really important assumptions. For example, customers don't care how you categorize them internally, so don't make that their problem.
    • Allied to this is an important reminder about transparency. Liz asks her team whether they would feel proud to explain a policy or decision on morning TV.
    • Sometimes what's needed is an apology, or at least an admission that things are going to get a little rocky. I think the key word for this whole episode has to be 'journey'. Take your stakeholders, both internal and external, on a journey with you and show them how you are fighting to deliver better for them.
    • TUI's experience shows that even the best prepared organizations get caught out when new systems come under strain. Let this be a useful reminder to look at your own org charts and think about what you would do if any one of those departments went down? Do you have a plan? The key is to do that even for the systems that don't seem mission critical right now.
    • Also crucial to your crisis plan is including breaks for all personnel. That means you too. How would you ensure continuity if something happened to you? How will you delegate more of your tasks swiftly so that you can concentrate on urgent triage and strategy?

Leadership post covid lockdown: moving from "I" to "We" and other questions

Leadership post covid lockdown: moving from "I" to "We" and other questions

My conversation with Ralf just as lockdown started to ease was around what questions we should be asking ourselves as leaders of systems and organizations. As I said to Ralf, this isn't about alchemy for answers. Rather, it's a review of what some of the useful questions are that leaders could be asking to build collective success in this rapidly changing world.

    In this episode we discuss:
    New world, same humans 2:00
A key question for leadership, how do you newly re-engage 7:14
    Band-aiding and re-trenching isn't the answer 10:42
Asking the right questions is the leader's biggest work right now 12:40
Leaders stepping out of internal crisis mode 18:33
Alpha personas will not sustain what leadership needs now, vulnerability required 23:55
    What drives leaders?
        - Tension between personal achievement and the collective 30: 41
        -  Play lead violin or conduct a beautiful piece of music? 33:56
What are my boundaries and from what place is that informed? 37:18
As a leader, am I giving myself the space for silent reflection? 39:08
Inner independence: a practical not mystical exercise 40:53
Covid might help us learn what to cultivate (the inner and outer work)  43:35

Bonus Episode 1: The Best of 2020 (so far)

Bonus Episode 1: The Best of 2020 (so far)

Hi. I’m Darcie T. Kelly and this is a bonus episode of Story Time with Darcie. Regularly, episodes are released on the first Thursday of the month when I read you a piece of my own eclectic short fiction. But this isn’t a regular episode.

There will still be a story, two in fact. Stories I am sure you will enjoy. This bonus episode is, after all, entitled The Best of 2020 (so far)

Our first story today is the Fan Favourite from January 2020 through June 2020. Of the six episodes and seven stories read in the first half of the year, one has been downloaded significantly more times than the others, which leads me to believe it is the most enjoyed (or at least the most shared). Thus, Three’s a Crowd has been crowned the Fan Favourite.

My thanks again to Hilke Kelly, Ron Kelly, Annissa Kelly, Pamela Kelly, and Lyra Branscombe lending their voices to this story.

Hearing my family play those roles delight me every time!

To round out our first Bonus Episode, I’m also revisiting my favourite story from the first half the year. I hemmed and hawwed over this choice for some time. Is my favorite Housemate, where a house plant plays an important role in helping our socially challenged protagonist work through concerns over cohabiting with her girlfriend? Maybe it was Refuge, a satire the writing of which helped me work through my fears about the political situation in USA? While I love both those stories for very different reasons, my favourite story featured on the podcast in the first half of the year is Beyond Incandescent. The fantastical setting on the banks of River Styx, the relationship arc between our two main characters, and … well, I don’t want to ruin the end if you haven’t heard it before.

My thanks again to Pamela Kelly for voicing the role of Candy. (I didn’t realize until just now that Pam guests in both of today’s favourites. Hmmm. I might have to bring her back again to see if her streak continues.)

Well, that’s it for today’s Bonus Episode of Story Time with Darcie. Special thanks to all the guests who participated in adapting these stories to audio format! This podcast wouldn’t exist with guest participation.

Listeners, if YOU would like to become a voice on Story Time With Darcie, please, reach out! My eclectic stories need a variety of voices, and yours will be a welcome addition!

Thank you for listening. To read more of my stories and perhaps inspire my next one, join me on facebook at DarcieTKelly. And of course, subscribe on your podcatcher of choice for future episodes of Story Time With Darcie

Until next month, stay well and keep smiling.

    Episode 3: Beyond Incandescent

    Episode 3: Beyond Incandescent

Welcome to Story Time with Darcie!
In every episode I’ll read you a piece of my own short fiction. I’m an eclectic writer, so you may be surprised by the genres and situations, but what these stories have in common is their exploration of big ideas.

Today, I’m delighted to share Beyond Incandescent with you. In this story, we enter the land of the dead where we revisit and reinvent Charion, ferryman of the dead. In case you need a bit of a refresher on your Greek Mythology, after their death, souls cross the River Styx in a skiff rowed “Venitian style” by Charion, a nightmarish figure of bone and rags. Well, that’s how the original story tells it.

Please join me in welcoming a new voice to the pod: Pamela Kelly. Thanks for voicing Candy for me, Pam. I’m looking forward to bringing you on for future episodes as well.

When I was assigned to write a romance along a riverbank, I was horrified. Romance is not something I enjoy reading much less writing, so I searched for a riverbank that would let me break away from genre expectations. When I landed on the River Styx, I knew I could mold Charion, traditionally a foreboding character, into an unexpected romantic lead.

Beyond Incandescent hits people differently. Some dislike how I’ve twisted the traditional story. Some enjoy the surprise of it. Some see a mirror of their own tragic loss of a loved one to Alzheimer's. Some hate Karen for trapping Candy and others praise her for the compassion she shows at the end. What do you think?

Well, that’s it for another episode of Story Time with Darcie. Special thanks to Pamela for adding her voice this month.

If YOU would like to become a voice on Story Time with Darcie, please, reach out! My eclectic stories need a variety of voices, and yours will be a welcome addition!

Thank you for listening. To read more of my stories and perhaps inspire my next one, join me on facebook at DarcieTKelly, and of course, subscribe here for future episodes of Story Time With Darcie
