Working Remotely: Balancing Business + Travel

Working Remotely: Balancing Business + Travel

Learning to balance business and travel was definitely a learning experience for Sarah as she embraced the digital nomad lifestyle. In this episode she is sharing some of the lessons, both expected and unexpected, that she learned while traveling for four months outside of the country in 2019.

    Embrace JOMO

We've all heard of FOMO, the fear of missing out, but have you tried JOMO, the joy of missing out? This was the first lesson Sarah learned while working remotely; especially with a group of 40 other individuals. With so much to explore and do embracing the JOMO to feel productive about getting work done, having your personal time or not saying yes to a commitment that you might not really be into is a blessing to working remotely.

Find Spaces that Work for You

Not every space is for you! When you are traveling and still needing to put in your office hours, finding the space where you feel comfortable, inspired and are able to focus is essential! Sarah shares how while in Lisbon she did not find herself productive in the co-working space she had access to, but her apartment was the perfect place to get in those work sessions so she could follow it up with a bit of exploration and play.

    Create Boundaries

You know your deadlines and commitments, so make sure you set boundaries to meet them. The lure of adventure and exploring a new place can be so enticing, but you do still have a business to run. Find the schedule that works for you. It might be:

    • You explore in the morning and work later in the day so you are working when your clients are  active as well
    • You working in the morning so you are free of distraction and having your time to be adventurous after the job is done
    • You commit to a full day(s) of work so you can take a day or two off and dedicate it just to seeing what is around you and diving into the culture

Find Minimalism & Ways to Adapt

Between having to travel with everything you pack and airline weight restrictions you have to learn to adapt. If you are a pen to paper lover like us it might be finding some ways to switch up to digital. The large whiteboard Sarah uses at home would definitely not fit in her luggage! Adapting to a digital calendar and more online tools helped to pack light.

    Start Small

If this is something that sounds like a dream but you are hesitant - start small. Travel to a different city or state near you for a week and try it out. Or if you are used to working in an office, break the routine and try working in coffeeshops for a week. The change and putting yourself out of your comfort zone will help you decide if it is the right decision for you.

    Guest Bios:

    Lauren

Lauren is American and describes herself as a "medium maintenance traveler" - she likes a bit of comfort and a good meal but also spent two weeks sleeping a tent on top of a truck in Namibia and isn't squeamish about peeing in the woods if the occasion calls for it.

She has been working in international schools as an English literature teacher for the past ten years - 3 years in South Korea 🇰🇷 and 7 years in Hungary 🇭🇺 - and will be moving to the United Arab Emirates later this year for her next thing post.

While traveling, Lauren likes to get to know places through their cuisine, history, art, and landscapes and never says no to a wine tour. 🍷

    Emma

Emma is Dutch and as adventurous as they come. She's an adrenaline junkie, climber, hiker, and boxer but also knows her way around a glass of wine and you will rarely see her without her camera. 📷

Emma has been working for an international NGO for veterinarians for over two years. Since then, she has not lived anywhere but has continuously traveled around the world, exploring new places while maintaining her career 💻🐶

She's the kind of traveler who will wake up at 4 am for a sunrise hike 🌄 - and try to persuade you to come with her. She's a bit more low maintenance than Lauren and has mastered the art of working out of hostels, cafés, and AirBnBs.

    Becoming a Digital Nomad

    Becoming a Digital Nomad

We both absolutely love having opportunities to travel and explore. Have you ever considered what it would look like to pack up your life and your business and travel the world while working? This has been something that has been on Sarah's heart for awhile now and she is finally taking the leap to make it a reality (at least for four months). Don't worry, we aren't going anywhere - our podcast is just becoming international!

    How is Sarah Doing This?
While you certainly can work and travel at your own leisure, working in coffee shops and staying in hostels or Airbnbs what really made this possible was hearing about a program called Remote Year. This program offers both 4 month and 12 month itineraries, where those who are able to work or run their own business from anywhere can join to experience and live in a new country each month.

A Bit More About Remote Year
Remote Year is not a company that pays you to work for them. You do need to have your own job while you are on the trip to pay for the program. The benefits of a program like Remote Year really is peace of mind that your housing, a place to work with reliable internet and travel between locations each month are covered. You also are traveling with people who you will get to know and have resources and questions answered from Remote Year employees that live in each country. Remote Year also offers additional program to explore and experience life in each country you visit.

Preparing for Becoming a Digital Nomad
Your life will literally be in a suitcase, or two! Traveling for extended periods of time while working is best done when traveling light. Consider a capsule wardrobe that you can have the variety you desire, and layers will be your friend in cooler weather. Compression bags and travel cubes are also very helpful for packing within your suitcases. But you definately will not want to carry around to much, so really think about the essentials for your business and what you absolutely need to take with you versus what you can buy along the way.

Of course packing is only one thing to consider. You will also want to figure out how you are contacting your clients. If you make a lot of calls or send texts you will want a phone plan that is not going to end up costing you an insanely high amount. You will also most likely be using a credit card as you travel to pay for your expenses, but some cards will charge high international fees. Research a card that will work for you well and not have a fee when abroad.

A Few Other Things to Consider:

    • Do you need a visa?
    • Should you purchase travel insurance?
    • What shots or other medical supplies will you need? Other countries will expose you to different health risks if you are spending a longer time there.
