Hi! I’m Gail Nobles and this is the third episode about REV105/Revolution Radio. A very special radio station that was one the air in the 90’s that played a fairly wide variety of music, mostly alternative rock, and put a lot of time into promoting music from local performers.

I’m still seeing the name of the radio station and hearing about it online. At Mixccloud.com, there is a guy by the name of DJ Kevin Cole that celebrated REV 105 for National Radio Day on KEXP. It was like hearing the radio station all over again when he put on Patsy Cline’s country song “Crazy” released in 1961.

That song is a classic. It puts me in a certain kind of mood. Patsy was encouraged by her producer to take risks in her singing with pauses, sighs, and lingering over her words. It added emotional power to the lyrics according to an essay by Douglass Gomery.

You might wonder why DJ Kevin started with Patsy Cline’s song on Mixcloud. REV 105’s eclectic new alternative rock format took to the air with the first official song being “Crazy” by Patsy Cline. REV105 Revolution Radio was a unique radio station. The station played a fairly wide variety of music, mostly alternative rock, and put a lot of time into promoting music from local performers. I like the sound of that. REV105 was a locally-owned Minneapolis radio station around 1990's. Minneapolis is the largest and most populous city in the US state of Minnesota. Minnesota has a very active music community, and a number of diverse artists have received national attention. Area high school students also contributed to some of the programming put on the air, such as the weekly "Rock n Roll Homeroom". That sounds neat.

REV105 enjoyed an almost three-year run, but the end came at noon on March 11, 1997, when the station was purchased by competitor Disney/Capital Cities/ABC, which already owned two powerful 100,000 wats stations in the Twin Cities KQRS-FM and KEGE (93.7FM "The Edge"). By 1:15, most of the air staff was fired and after playing "Hello, Goodbye" by the Beatles, the station was reborn with a hard rock format as "X105". The first song on "X105" was Rock You Like a Hurricane by The Scorpions.

It's sad when you got a favorite radio station and suddenly they no longer exists. It's sad when you know they are playing the best music, and they are suddenly off the air. Then there is another station competing and making fun of your favorite station. The new radio stations are nothing like the old ones. The old ones to me were the best, and if I could, I would bring it all back. So listen for.....(Commercial playing).
