Just defining what these ideas of a man mean to me. Defining a man for me is a bit different than how the world sees it. Sometimes people create ideas of people based on movies, I like to create definitions based on real life.

#16 Narrative of a Naturalist: The Journal of John Kirk Townsend Pt 3 of 3

#16 Narrative of a Naturalist: The Journal of John Kirk Townsend Pt 3 of 3

Part three of a three part series dedicated to the naturalist and explorer, John Kirk Townsend. In 1839, Townsend published his journal as a book entitled "A Narrative of a Journey Across the Rocky Mountains to the Columbia River". The journal recounts the then 24 year old's trip from Missouri to the mouth of the Columbia River in 1834, with fellow naturalist and professor Thomas Nuttall.

This narration is slightly abridged by the narrator and is based on an old printing where some excerpts of the original journal were omitted. For a complete version of Townsend's book, go to this link:

RTBS 01 04 "Missing, Presumed Dead: Dirty Secrets from the History of the Trade in Human Cadavers"

In this episode, we dig deeply into the troubling history of obtaining human bodies for anatomical dissection and medical education.  From disappearing parents to New York Riots to companies that offer body parts for rent, we can guarantee a fascinating though sometimes morbid excursion through medical history.  You will meet a lot of people who weren’t afraid to get their hands dirty, with side trips into stone babies, a children’s game we don’t recommend you try at home, and an unexpected message from the research desk.  Thanks as always to the crew at Pitt’s Center for Teaching, the folks at Freesound, and Venetia M. Guerrasio,  author of Dissecting the Pennsylvania Anatomy Act: Laws, Bodies, and Science, 1880—1960.

Episode 118 - The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (1:11:46)

Episode 118 - The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (1:11:46)
We do an analysis of the Coen Brothers latest effort, the Ballad of Buster Scruggs. It's a series of 6-western themed vignettes with the requisite Coen-quirkiness. Each story has a few interesting points for the sake of our discussion...and what do you know, it comes out to enough for a show.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs recounts the narrative of a sharp-shooting vocalist. In Near Algodones, a would be bank-robber gets his due to say the very least. Meal Ticket is a dreary story around two fatigued weary traveling entertainers. All Gold Canyon is an nearly one man show about a miner digging for gold, while a lady finds a startling level of adoration, alongside a portion of life's savage incongruity, on a wagon train over the prairies in The Gal Who Got Rattled. And lastly, spooky feels frequent The Mortal Remains as a Woman downpours judgment upon a diverse group of fellow carriage companions each with a different philosophy on life.

We throw about ten minutes at each story and this falls right into Robert’s wheelhouse. Join us for the lively discussion.

And next week, get ready, we’re doing the goofy classic My Cousin Vinny with our lawyer friend, and fellow podcaster, Patrick MacFarlane of the Liberty Weekly Podcast.

    Presented by www.ActualAnarchy.com

Robert and I analyze popular movies from a Rothbardian/Anarcho-Capitalist perspective.

We use movies as a starting point for people who may not be familiar with this way of thinking. Discussion of the plot and decisions that characters make in relation to morality and violations of the non-aggression principle are our bread and butter.

We also will highlight and discuss any themes or lessons from Austrian Economics that we can glean from the film.

The point is to show what anarchy actually is with instances that are presented in film.

We publish at least once per week; and occasionally will do specials surrounding holidays or events (elections/olympics) and have guests.
