The Sinking of the USS Indianapolis (Preview)

The Sinking of the USS Indianapolis (Preview)

It is the most horrific tale from the most catastrophic war the World has ever known. It is the story of the sinking of the USS Indianapolis, the warship that had just completed its top secret mission to deliver the uranium needed to build the first atomic bomb that would be dropped on Hiroshima , Japan.

It would be sunk by a Japanese submarine as it traveled through the Philippine Sea on its way to Leyte, in the Philippines.  the story was largely forgotten, even at the time, by a U.S. Government that had just won the war, announcing the sinking at the same time as the Japanese surrender, and by the American public anxious to move on from the war that had so dominated their lives for three and a half years.

It was only revived, and brought back to the public consciousness by a pivotal scene in a summer blockbuster movie in 1975. In the movie "JAWS", the fictional Captain Quint of the shark hunting ship  "Orca" was said to be an Indianapolis survivor, and the speech he gave about the event  was the heart of the movie. In this preview, we use portions of that dramatic cinematic moment, delivered by the Shakespearean theater giant, Robert Shaw, and directed by the legendary Stephen Spielberg, to lead you through a preview of the tale, as told by the real survivors of the sinking of the Indianapolis. It is a gripping, horrific, heroic, and in the end hopeful story, of the largest naval catastrophe of the war. In a coming two part podcast documentary special edition at the start of our podcast's 11th season in late September.

    Jaws (1975): "Gag Stab™"

    Jaws (1975): "Gag Stab™"

Need a little warm up — or foreplay, if you will — for everyone’s favorite week dedicated to aquatic-themed entertainment? On a new Spooky Tuesday, we’re going for a swim with one of the most iconic horror movies of all time (and, frankly, one of the most iconic movies just in general) as we take on Jaws (1975). The film may honestly be kind of minimalist considering how much of it is just three guys on a boat, but we’ve got plenty to say about their chest hair, their strangely endearing toasts, and their lil fishy friend. As the iconic Degrassi promo goes, “Baby, there’s a shark in the water.”

From Russia With Love (1963) – “Living For the Bond” Series

In our ongoing Bond series, we revisit the OG Bond, Sir Sean Connery, in this second film in the franchise.

We follow Bond this time in the midst of a Cold War espionage plot where he has to take on SPECTRE, the shadowy organization that is out to kill him along with possibly inciting World War III.

This was PEAK Connery and very much a film of its time, very 1960’s.  It also co-stars Robert Shaw as the iconic villain Red Grant along with Lotte Lenya as the infamous Rose Klebb.

    061 | Jaws

    061 | Jaws

Connor & Jon get their feet wet in discussing the film that created the modern blockbuster: Jaws! Probably the most well known limitation in film history that created the perfect horror/adventure film. They discuss how different(and not as good) it would be if the shark had worked perfectly and the beginnings of Spielberg's career and how this experience shaped his future films and collaborations.
