The Bear Season 2 with Rev. Solomon Missouri

The Bear Season 2 with Rev. Solomon Missouri

Happy Wine Wednesday! I am delighted to welcome back the brilliant, hilarious, and insightful Reverend Solomon Missouri to talk about the incredible second season of The Bear.  I had a great time discussing the first season of The Bear with Solomon, so I was thrilled when he enthusiastically agreed to return to talk more about this show we love so very much.

One of the reasons why The Bear resonated so much with me is because I often feel seen, attacked, or sometimes both by the writing for certain characters.  So with that in mind, I asked Solomon to share the character beats that resonated most with him this season.

We delve deeper into the character arcs by sharing the ones we enjoyed most.  It should come as a surprise to no one that we both loved what the writers did with Richie this season.  Of course we get into the standout episodes of the season - we spend a lot of time unpacking the parade of stars and stellar performances in the chaotic episode "Fishes."

As always, the episode ends with the thirst segment in which our thoughts and reflections go from wholesome to lusty.  In honor of Carmy's trip down memory lane with Claire, I asked Solomon who he would like to pitch a little woo to if he was gifted a time machine that would make all the beautiful people throughout history fair game for his affection.

We also get into the fandom shipping wars.  It's time for y'all to come home from war - your families miss you.  We talk Carmy x Claire, Carmy x Syd, and Marcus x Syd.  Shippers aren't going to get on the same page about Carmy's perfect mate, so I ask Solomon whether Ebra x Tina are the couple that perhaps the shippers could unite behind and finally find some peace.

Thank you so much for listening!

Friendly reminder - we drink, we know things, we use adult language, and we have a great time!

You can find everywhere Solomon is located on social media here. And find his ICONIC thread and words of wisdom for Dell Curry here.

    Episode 19: The Five Heartbeats

    Episode 19: The Five Heartbeats

Season 2 is almost done, but Bryce, Krissy and JG had to talk about this undeniable classic of Black cinema, 1991's The Five Heartbeats! The music drama follows a fictional Motown era vocal group as they traverse through the additions and egos that broke up many of the real groups of that time period. Robert Townsend, who already got brought up during The Meteor Man episode, directed this flick and wrote it along with Keenan Ivory Wayans. So basically, you need to go watch this movie if you haven't seen it before!

    Episode 3: The Meteor Man

    Episode 3: The Meteor Man

Before there was a Blade or Black Panther movie, we had The Meteor Man! Bryce and Irving delve into the 1993 super hero comedy. Robert Townsend directed, wrote and starred in this cult classic. Marla Gibbs, Eddie Griffin, James Earl Jones, and Roy Fegan share the screen with him in this often overlooked 90's gem. Unfortunately it's hard to find online, but it you manage to find it you'll have a blast!

2 - Hollywood Shuffle and Representation

2 - Hollywood Shuffle and Representation

As a way of preparing for analysis of Spike Lee's cinema, I reflect here on how Robert Townsend's 1987 film Hollywood Shuffle poses a series of challenges to filmmaking and the representation of Black people and Black life on the screen. In particular, I am interested in his critique of Hollywood's racial history - a critique made by plain reportage - and how he uses humor to double our relationship to the film and also how he negotiates the precarious cultural politics of the white gaze, the Black gaze, and the interracial space of cinematic viewership. Townsend takes risks and sets a template for challenging historical representation, while also understanding the immense gravity of antiblackness in cinematic spectacle, composition, and audience engagement - something that is perhaps inescapable.

Kwame Kwei-Armah on ‘Malcolm X,’ ‘Ragtime’ and ‘Hollywood Shuffle’

A writer for stage and screen, an artistic director, and an actor, Kwame Kwei-Armah chose a truly poetic trio of Black men pushed to a righteous breaking point for today’s conversation. Which is a perfect parallel to his latest project, Breaking (which premiered at Sundance ‘22 under the title 892), starring John Boyega and based on the true story of Brian Brown-Easley.

Then, Jordan has one quick thing about forthcoming shorts anthology Give Me an A.

    Movies this week:

    Malcolm X (Spike Lee, 1992)

    Ragtime (Milos Forman, 1981)

    Hollywood Shuffle (Robert Townsend, 1987)

    Lil Rel Howery

    Lil Rel Howery

This week we mix it up as Quentin and Darius collaborate with Team Coco to produce a live taping recorded during NBA All Star Weekend 2020. For this one the fellas are joined by comedian Lil Rel Howery and of course, the three get into everything Chicago. This hilarious episode highlights Lil Rel’s early comedic career coming up in Chicago, with Rel reminiscing about the time he snuck into a comedy club for his first live show. He also touches on what it was like to watch Q play at Whitney Young and how Richardson’s DePaul team remains one of his favorite college basketball teams of all time. The guys then touch on Rel’s mentors, getting into why Eddie Murphy influenced so many comedians — though Rel reveals that J.B. Smoove was the first comic to have him “dyin’ laughing.” He also talks about doing Uncle Drew and why working with Shaq and Nate Robinson on a daily basis is A LOT. The guys then focus on the Celebrity All-Star game, in which they played together. Lil Rel has a bone to pick with Darius, since D struggled to pass him the ball. Later on, Rel explains why Get Out was such a special project to be a part of and stands firm in his belief that it should have won an Oscar. Lil Rel brings the pride of Chicago and a whole lot of laughs to Knuckleheads’ second-ever live event!

Robert Townsend of MIT and the Consortium on Financial Systems and Poverty talks with EconTalk host Russ Roberts about development and the role of financial institutions in growth. Drawing on his research, particularly his surveys of households in Thailand, Townsend argues that both informal networks and arrangements and formal financial institutions play important roles in dealing with risk. Along the way, he discusses the role of microfinance in poor countries and the potential for better financial arrangements to lead to higher growth and the accumulation of wealth.
