This week on TMR, we flash back to the Art Deco past and get into a big fight about... well, exactly what Art Deco is. A movie about a remarkably mentally healthy Howard Hughes; angelic, heavenly creature Jennifer Connelly; an underrated James Bond turns in an underrated villain performance; and huge Nazi blimps fly over Los Angeles and NO ONE EVEN NOTICES. We watched 1991's would-be franchise beginning "The Rocketeer."

Cliff Secord (Bill Campbell) is a cocky stunt pilot in love with a beautiful actress, Jenny Blake (Jennifer Connelly). When he discovers a jet pack hidden in a biplane, Cliff straps on the rocket, dons a flashy helmet and becomes the high-flying hero known as The Rocketeer. But when Nazis want to use the rocket as a weapon, Cliff must use his alter ego to both protect Jenny from an evil actor (Timothy Dalton) and save the day in this period adventure based on the comic books by Dave Stevens.

    19: A Page-Turner of a Movie

    19: A Page-Turner of a Movie

    The Rocketeer.

In 1982 a comic mini series came out that harkened back to the serial adventures from the 1930's. Dave Steven's Rocketeer became a classic for comic enthusiasts, with it's fast pace, noir feel, lush artwork, and more adult themes. Then the Walt Disney company did what it does best, it took a property and remade it in their own image.

In this episode of The 602 Club host Matthew Rushing is joined by Darren Moser and Norman Lao to talk about The Rocketeer. We discuss the comic and whether the movie is an improvement, our first experiences with the film, Joe Johnson learning from the masters on how to direct a homage to the serial, the story, the cast, the music and whether or not it still holds up.

    Zone 4 #264: Pulptastic!

The crew returns with a special all-pulp episode! Sadly, John was absent due to being carried off into the jungle by Grodd, Congorilla and Bleep for a birthday party (John likes monkeys), and he contracted some gorilla flu. But the rest of the crew pressed on.

First up, Captain Ron filled us in on his adventures at PulpFest 2013 with some special contemporary shout-outs.

Then, the guys covered two pulp inspired comics written by Mark Waid: The Rocketeer/The Spirit: Pulp Friction #1, and Green Hornet #4.

And for the main topic, it was all about the BBC/PBS Sherlock television series starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman.

And there are new shout-outs this week! Plus some plugs.

So strap on your housecoat, sit back in your cozy leather chair, and gear up for some all pulp fun. It's time to enter the Zone!
