    Läkaren Ingrid le Roux berättar om arbetet med utsatta kvinnor och barn i Sydafrikas fattigaste områden, och om hur hon hamnade där.

    En dag i augusti 1964 står Ingrid le Roux på kajen i Amsterdams hamn. Där stod hon tillsammans med kanske tusen nervösa och förväntansfulla tonåringar från världens alla hörn. De hade kommit till Amsterdam för att ta båten till New York. Alla var stipendiater, och skulle bo i amerikanska familjer och gå på High School under ett år i USA. En av stipendiaterna var Pieter le Roux från Sydafrika, som så småningom blev hennes man.

    "Det var inte självklart för oss att vi skulle bosätta oss i det ras-segregerade Sydafrika, med en så osäker framtid. Men Pieter är nationalekonom och var inspirerad av den svenska välfärdsekonomin, han ville påverka Sydafrika i den riktningen. Och jag ville göra sjuka barn friska. Vi kände båda att vi skulle kunna göra nytta i Sydafrika."

    "Vi förstod snart att vi måste göra något åt undernäringen om vi skulle kunna bota barnen från alla infektioner. Vi öppnade en mottagning för rehabilitering av de undernärda barnen i en enkel kyrksal.  Dit kom mammorna varje dag med sina barn och vi började tala om vad som hade orsakat undernäringen. Oftast handlade det om brist på pengar."

    Har i 40 år arbetat med utsatta kvinnor och barn i Sydafrikas fattigaste områden. Tilldelades utmärkelsen Årets livsgärning vid Svenska hjältar-galan 2018. Läkarundersökte Nelson Mandela dagen efter hans frigivning. Är Desmond Tutus husläkare och nära vän. Livsverket är organisationen Philani som driver barn- och mödravårdskliniker i Kapstadens kåkstäder.

    Har utbildat hundratals ”mentormammor” som gör hembesök i fattiga och farliga områden där de själva vuxit upp. Utsedd till hedersdoktor vid Karolinska Institutet.

    Har en djup och stark kristen tro.
