    Mind the Policy Implementation Gap

    Mind the Policy Implementation Gap

Over the last 75 years of India’s independence, there has been no dearth of ideas and policies targeting progress. Yet policy progress is dependent on policy implementation. In this episode, Aarushi Kataria talks to Pranay Kotasthane about the gap that exists between policies on paper and what they actually achieve. They talk about the Right to Information Act 2005 and the 2020 Farm Bills in light of that discussion.

    13. Bringing Data to Action with an Early Literacy Screener

    13. Bringing Data to Action with an Early Literacy Screener

GUEST: CARLA SMALL, CEO, EARLYBIRD EDUCATION. Research shows that 70% of children who were not reading on grade level in first grade continue to not be reading on grade level in eighth grade. Catching reading difficulties early is the key to intervening with reading support to get learners back on track. EarlyBird is technology platform based on brain research that identifies whether a child is at risk for reading struggles like dyslexia, even before they learn to read. Amy talks with Carla Small about the development of this game-based tool and how it has been used effectively to help early readers.

Refinery and pyrolysis: is it a match?

Refinery and pyrolysis: is it a match?

New technological developments are serving up new possibilities with pyrolysis, but a number of challenges regarding upscaling, unit placing, and the transportation and storage of feedstock remain. Which refineries could benefit from implementing pyrolysis technology – and how?

Once again, Topsoe’s Sylvain hosts David Dayton, a Senior Fellow at the American non-profit, RTI International (The Research Triangle Institute). This time they discuss the commercial aspects of pyrolysis. Sylvain also talks to Topsoe’s R&D Director Jostein Gabrielsen and Research Scientist Magnus Zingler Stummann to discuss what it takes for refineries to take advantage of the technology.

#24 How to Get More Gen Ed Teacher Involvement in IEPs

#24 How to Get More Gen Ed Teacher Involvement in IEPs

Teachers, all of them have so much on their plates right now...and let’s face it, if it isn’t a task they are directly responsible for, things are being back-burnered...just for survival if nothing else. Not that helping out a coworker isn't important, or that data collection isn't either....but when it comes to providing feedback on student performance...if it isn't something that the teacher is directly responsible for creating....that feedback gets put to the bottom of the "must-do" pile pretty quickly...

Today we are going to talk about ways that special education teachers can encourage more gen ed teacher involvement in IEPs.

#23 How to Get More Parent Involvement in IEPs

#23 How to Get More Parent Involvement in IEPs

If you’re a special education teacher, you know that some parents are going to come to every IEP meeting and give good input...and other parents are going to be incredibly difficult to reach and getting them to attend, even over the phone, can be like pulling teeth. What can we do to get more involvement from that second group of parents?

Today, let’s talk about how we can get more parents actively involved in IEP meetings. In this episode, I'll be sharing several ideas I've used over the years to encourage more active parent involvement in IEP meetings.

#22 Getting Parents Involved in Providing Interventions

Have you ever sat with your coworkers and discussed how awesome it would be if parents could or would work with children at home? I know I have many times.

Today we are going to talk about some ways that teachers can help parents understand the interventions they are providing to students, and how they can support the students at home. If we can get more buy-in from parents, we can make bigger, faster gains in student learning.

#19 Ok, I have data….What do I do with it?

How incredibly frustrating is it when you’ve been working with a student for a long time, and you have come to understand that the student needs more supports than you’re able to give...but no one will listen when you talk about this issue???? I know it absolutely drove me up the wall when that happened to me!

Today, I would like to talk a little bit about what you can do with all of that data you’ve been collecting and how you can use it to advocate for your students.

    #2: Let's Build a House!

    #2: Let's Build a House!

I heard a great analogy several years ago about education and teaching, which has struck a nerve with me. I have come to realize that teaching is a great deal like building a house. Our students need a firm, well-built foundation, on which all later learning can be built.

In previous years, teaching was more tailored to the individual student, and while I value this individualization, I have no wish to go back to the one-room schoolhouse with 40 students! But, I do think that an in-depth analysis about why students struggle in school, and why this struggle snowballs as they move through the grade levels is needed.

In this episode, I discuss this analogy, give a silly example of what would happen if we treated construction of houses like we do the education of a student, and why I think progress monitoring and the RTI/MTSS process could be important in improving student outcomes in today's school environment.

    Learning Disabilities 101

    Learning Disabilities 101

The process for identifying a specific learning disability such as dyslexia is complicated in the public school setting. In this episode Mary explains the RTI (Response to Intervention) process. She also breaks down how a student is eligible for special education in the public school. Key take away is ensuring that the student is receiving appropriate instruction to remediate their decoding struggles. Strong Tier 1 and 2 instruction is necessary to determine whether the student has a learning deficit or a learning disability.
