WKRIO 002: Voices From the Past! or... Voices from the Trail 2018
_[NOTE: Due to poor producer skills, this episode was nearly lost to time. But thanks to some more experience, better audio editing tools (Thanks Patrons!) and quite a bit of luck... I think something was able to salvaged here. Happy to be able to share the stories from this night with you. Sorry for any residual poor audio quality. It remains the fault of the producer and not the panelists!) _ Way back in 2018... Mort Nace and Medved once again gathered a distinguished panel of runners, assembled an interested community and provided a comfortable space for many stories to be told.  Jason Vidmar, Michael Burke, Nate Huckle, Katie Ghidiu and Joy Valvano shared their running stories with us. From broken bladders, spontaneous 50ks, near death coaching experiences to professional outdoor parenting tips. Jason Vidmar's storied running career spans the peeks of Powder Mills Park, to the depths of the Barkley Fall Classic, around the hills of the Georgia Death Race and has left footsteps all over the Adirondacks. Trail Dad is always up for an adventure and often comes away with some entertaining anecdotes. Katie Ghidiu is fast. She has run a sub 5 minute mile (4:55), a sub 3 hr marathon (2:58) and a sub 24 hour 100m (2:39). She Ran cross country and track at Fairport HS and University of Notre Dame. With regards to trail racing she has a 3rd and a 1st at Ontario Summit Trail Marathon; A 1st place at Sehgahunda Trail Marathon, a 1st at Wakely Dam 55k, 3rd and 5th places finishes at Twisted Branch 100k, and sub 24 hour at her first 100 miler in Burning River 100M, 23:39. She is also an Adirondack 46er and likely has a lot of dirt on Nate Huckle. Nate Huckle is a running coach, a mentor, an ultrarunner, an ADK46er and a raconteur.  Go on a run with him and he'll likely start telling you a story that before you know it, has held your attention for more hours and miles than you intended (or were willing) to run! Michael Burke has run more than 70 races in and around the Rochester area. While doing so he has found time to raise his family outdoors (not actually, but you know) and help found a charity that assists local families affected by cancer. Find Mike on the trails and he is more than likely to chew your ear off (again, not actually, but with like stories and jokes and stuff) Joy Valvano started running ultras back when it was considered crazy. More crazy than today. Her running consisted of often taking up road trip adventures with her running friends to races like Bull Run Run (10 times!!) and even 100 milers like Haliburton and Vermont. But her running isn't all in her past, Joy has recently run Twisted Branch 100k. Originally a runner for some alone time and a bit of fitness, Joy has found herself spending more and more (and more) time in the woods. Special Guests: Jason Vidmar, Joy Valvano, Katie Ghidiu, Michael Burke, Mort Nace, and Nate Huckle.

082: We Don't Have to Talk About Me - with Mike Welden

082: We Don't Have to Talk About Me - with Mike Welden
Despite the odds, the Earth has made it around the sun again and so it is time for Mike Welden to visit the studio. I wasn't sure what Mike had in store when he called me. In the end, it turned it wasn't anything to be afraid of; a little bit of running, a couple of laughs and good chat with a great person. Mike and I talk a little bit about Many On the Genny, Twisted Branch, and what it might look like if we all started being a bit more human to each other. As with most episodes featuring MIke, the language gets a little saucy, so keep away from sensitive ears if that isn't your thing. Special Guest: Mike Welden.

080: Barkley Marathons at Mind The Ducks - with John Fegyveresi and Tim Hardy

080: Barkley Marathons at Mind The Ducks - with John Fegyveresi and Tim Hardy
You may have heard of a little Netflix documentary called "Barkley, the Race that eats its young" and if you are a trail or ultra runner, you may have even been asked if you ever ran or want to run Barkley. And if you are a silly person, you might even be thinking that you DO want to run Barkley someday. What you may not know is that we have two people from the Rochester Area that have run Barkley. In fact, 6 they have 6 attempts between the two of them! Tim Hardy and John Fegyveresi both ran the race in 2012. John is one of the races only 15 finishers. Tim has finished races like Arrowhead 135, Badwater, And Massanutten Mountain and yet was portrayed as 'the human sacrifice' in the movie. Well thanks to Greater Rochester Track Club, Tim and John gave us a view behind the curtain. Special Guests: John Fegyveresi and Tim Hardy.

079: I Love Getting Old - with Karen Howe

079: I Love Getting Old - with Karen Howe
Karen Howe recently ran a 3:08 at Boston. A PR by 2 minutes, at the age of 42. What's the secret? Well, she takes a day out of her recovery schedule to talk about her recent run as part of Team MR8. We talk about how a combination of planning, positivity, stubborness, coaching, and consistency is helping her get faster as she gets older! Special Guest: Karen Howe.

071: I'm Not Going Back - with Scott Parr

071: I'm Not Going Back - with Scott Parr
Scott Parr joins to talk about what got him into the world of running, pushing the limits of his body and finding fun in the suffering. Scott had a pretty awesome 2018 that included three pretty big ultras in Many on the Genny, Cayuga Trails and Twisted Branch. In addition to 2018 memories, he drops some pretty big plans for the future as well. 071_Scott_Parr_DamGood https://uploads.fireside.fm/images/0/04dc5a6a-32ff-45bb-8b25-9b777b81a4c8/20yNqDTx.jpg Ripping up the trails at Dam Good 2013! 070: You're Doing Better Than Anyone Thought You Would - with Chris O'Brien
The tables are turned for the 2nd time ever on the podcast. Jamie Hobbs convinced me to be other the other side of the mic and so, ... In this episode, Chris O'Brien (me) joins to talk about Oil Creek 100k. Listen in to find out what happens when a podcast host does exactly the bare minimum training and even less planning for an ultra! (Spoiler: His friends all pitch in to bail him out!) Special Guest: Jamie Hobbs.

    069: I'm Crazy, I'm in - with Jen DiSalvo

    069: I'm Crazy, I'm in - with Jen DiSalvo
Jen DiSalvo joins me in the studio to tell us her story of quitting smoking and starting running to be a healty mom for her family. She went from couch to 5k, from 5k to half marathon and from half marathons to ultra... and this year was 3 ultras in 3 months. Jen is one of only 4 people to complete the inaugural Empire State Triad. 3 ultras, Many on the Genny (40 miles in June), Cayuga Trails (50 miles in July) and Twisted Branch Trail Run (100k in August.)
