    Wakanda is Forever

    Wakanda is Forever

Marvel’s Black Panther has always been more than a superhero franchise. Since the first film came out in 2018, the characters and their utopian home, the fictional African nation of Wakanda, have become ingrained in popular culture. “Wakanda forever” became more than a line from a movie — it transformed into shorthand for Black pride and excellence.

Now, the long-awaited sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, is once again redefining the genre.

Filmed after the death of star Chadwick Boseman, who had played King T’Challa aka the Black Panther, director Ryan Coogler decided the movie would tackle the tragedy head on, and show a nation in mourning.

This week on Into America, Trymaine Lee sits down with Kelley Carter, a reporter for ESPN’s Andscape, to talk about why the franchise resonates so deeply, and how the sequel deals with grief and the legacy of the Black Panther. Trymaine also speaks to author Eve L. Ewing, who writes Marvel’s Ironheart comic series, about the importance of Black superheroes.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever - Ambitious and/or Bloated

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever - Ambitious and/or Bloated

    MOVIE DISCUSSION:

Melvin & Dan can only agree on one thing: Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is, in fact, a Marvel movie. To focus their attention, Melvin proposes four ambitions that he feels will make-or-break the film for audience members.

    Topics:

    • (PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 44-minutes discussing Kevin Conroy's passing, Video Rental store nostalgia, and media curation (PATREON EXCLUSIVE)
    • Reflecting on Black Panther's immense cultural impact and success.
    • Reminiscing on the intended plans for King T'Challa in the MCU post-Endgame.
    • Melvin liked that Black Panther: Wakanda Forever had a somewhat self-serious profile as opposed to the more flippant, light sensibilities of other Marvel fare.
    • However, Melvin has four headers - ambitions - that he observed within Black Panther: Wakanda Forever that he felt prevented him from "buying in" to the fiction of the film but may actually be beneficial qualities to certain audience members.
    • His first point covers the film's global stage for a political drama between potentially warring counties.
    • His second point covers the personal character stories within the film.
    • A brief aside from the points, Melvin and Daniel agree: the suits at the end of the movie aren't that good.
    • Melvin's third point has to do with the film's metatextual pairing of T'Challa's fictional death and Chadwick Boseman's real-life death.
    • Melvin's final point covers what he would consider inefficient pacing, such as scenes clearly setting up future movies, or scenes having only one purpose at a time rather than being dynamic in detail.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – Is This Your Sequel?

Special guest Adonis Gonzalez joins us this week for a review of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the sequel to Marvel's Black Panther from 2018. Since Chadwick Boseman's tragic death in 2020, many have wondered what the future of this franchise might hold without its main star, even with much of the rest of the cast returning along with Ryan Coogler as director and co-writer. As always, we end the show with the Rotten Tomatoes Game and mull over what we might review next week.

    Return to Wakanda

    Return to Wakanda

On this week’s episode of Acting Up, Cortney Wills takes us back to Wakanda and dives in to the highly anticipated film ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’. She sits down with actress Lupita Nyong'o to find out how her character Nakia’s journey through grief compared to her own experience mourning the late Chadwick Boseman. She also talks to the film’s co-writer and director, Ryan Coogler to find out how he continued the story after losing his hero and managed to invite a whole new demographic to the MCU. He also explains how he navigating art imitating life and what parts of the script Chadwick Boseman was excited about before he passed.
