BONUS EPISODE - Seven Psychopaths
This week, we are continuing the “bonus episode” director deep dive. With the film The Banshees of Inisherin on the horizon, we’re going on a kick of the playwright turned director Martin McDonagh’s movies. The list may be small, but he is one of the best writer/directors working today. This week, we are doing his second feature length film, Seven Psychopaths (2012), as well as his very first film, the short Six Shooter (2004).
BONUS EPISODE - Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
This week, we are starting a “bonus episode” director deep dive. Episode 190: - Pearl & See How They Run
128. Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, Ethan Hawke & HBO's 'The Last Movie Stars' (2022)
Ethan Hawke's meta-documentary about the lives, love, losses, and careers of Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward is a worthwhile, often confounding effort with rewards and challenges alike.
In this episode Jason talks about the origin of the documentary in the discovery of some transcripts of interviews conducted by a Newman associate in pursuit of a memoir and biography that Newman wanted to work on. For unknown reasons, Newman later abandoned the project and burned the audio tapes. But the transcripts survived and form the basis for actor-interpreted versions used in Hawke's documentary to varying degrees of success.
The documentary tackles weighty issues like the loss of Newman's son Scott, the struggle within a marriage to survive the orbital tilt of Newman's level of super-stardom, and Newman's battle with alcoholism...a battle it seems he never quite won.
By turns infuriating and moving, the film is a worthy but effortful watch.
Also discussed: Alan Cummings lip-sync performance in the documentary 'My Old School', the AI Bourdain quotes used in his posthumous doc, and Peter Jackson's use of machine learning processes to reveal (or create) conversations in 'The Beatles: Get Back'.
Galaxy Quest
Charles Skaggs & Xan Sprouse watch Galaxy Quest, the 1999 science fiction comedy film directed by Dean Parisot and featuring Tim Allen as Jason Nesmith, Sigourney Weaver as Gwen DeMarco, Alan Rickman as Alexander Dane, and Sam Rockwell as Guy Fleegman!

42 // Steve Dix 🆚 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy // Thumb Wrestling
What is your ultimate answer? To the question, the great question, of whether or not you like the movie version of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy? For British born comedian and national treasure of geekdom Steve Dix it's a short answer: "Meh!" He calls in from Cologne for a chat. And he's not at all a fan of this, maybe the worst, version that seems to be glad to get rid of some of the jokes of a piece of comedy that's known for its wordyness.
It's the story of how the Earth is blown up, and the only surviving Earthman Arthur Dent is forced to have a space adventure. And all he wanted was a cup of Earl Grey. Helped by his best friend and alien Ford Prefect, he's able to reconnect with one-time flirt Trillian. And all of them are tagged along by egomaniacal President of the Galaxy Zaphod Beeblebrox, on a quest to discover the Ultimate Answer. To Life, the Universe and Everything.
A weird space adventure, that is mostly the vehicle for a lot of brilliant comedy from Douglas Adams. Or so it is in its best versions. The 2005 movie has a lot of great stuff to offer, and gets a lot of new fans to connect with it. But even our host has to admit there's plenty of room for improvement.
Other talking points include a lot of origin stories for some of the best jokes from The Hitchhiker's Guide, how it compares to other versions like the book and the tv-series, and a dip into the life and works of that other funny writer, Terry Pratchett.
Also Ruud takes the time to talk about the recent sudden passing of his older brother Tim. A deeply sad thing, that also caused this episode to be pushed back a couple of days. But that was the least of our worries these last few day. If you wish to give him some emotional support, please know that you're very welcome to do so. You can send him a message via duimpjeworstelen@gmail.com.

Why we went bananas over The One and Only Ivan: Episode 077
We're back with a post-quarantine viewing of The One and Only Ivan, the DisneyPlus movie that is much deeper than you'd expect.
'Jojo Rabbit' (featuring Karen Peterson)
The Holocaust isn't exactly brimming with comedic potential. But in the right hands, the real-life horrors of World War II can serve a noble cause. In some cases, this harsh setting can underscore the futility of hate and the absurdity of prejudice. Such is the goal of this episode's movie, writer-director Taika Waititi's 2019 Oscar winner Jojo Rabbit.
On her first appearance, Karen Peterson brought Bridget Jones's Diary to the Table. But we had a lot more ground to cover this time. We'll discuss how some moviegoers grossly misunderstood Jojo Rabbit, what Waititi changes in his adaptation of Christine Leunens' 2004 novel Caging Skies, and why Scarlett Johansson is the undisputed heart of the movie.
So brush up on those dance moves, turn up some Bowie, and prepare to tell Hitler to eff off as we launch into 2019's "anti-hate satire" Jojo Rabbit.
SYNOPSIS
Jojo (Roman Griffin Davis) is a lonely German boy who discovers that his single mother (Scarlett Johansson) is hiding a Jewish girl (Thomas McKenzie) in their attic. Aided only by his imaginary friend -- Adolf Hitler (writer/director Taika Waititi) -- Jojo must confront his blind nationalism as World War II continues to rage on.
