Rukmini and the Turning of Time: The Dawn of an Era with Dena Merriam

Rukmini and the Turning of Time: The Dawn of an Era with Dena Merriam

This book is told through the voice of a dancer in ancient Dwarka, a city on the western coast of India. It was on a pilgrimage to Dwarka a few years ago that Dena experienced her life. But even though this book recounts events in her life and follows her through three incarnations, this story is not truly about her but about Rukmini, the one who was working behind the scenes, as Rukmini and Shri Krishna set the framework for the era that was beginning to unfold. This narrative shows how Rukmini Mata enabled those around her to fulfil samskaras from past births―the karma one has accrued in the cycle of life, death, and rebirth―bringing closure to unfinished relationships and desires. Dena include many stories told by women to other women, recounted by those living in Dwarka in close association with Rukmini, in the hope of showing how an incarnation of the Universal Mother comes to guide an evolving humanity.

Dena Merriam began work in the inter-faith movement in 1990s as Vice Chair of the Millennium World Peace Summit of Religious Leaders held at the UN in 2000. She is the founder of the Global Peace Initiative of Women (GPIW). For over 40 years, she has been a student of Paramahansa Yogananda and a meditation practitioner. She received her MA from Columbia Univ. In 2014 she received the Niwano Peace Prize for her interfaith peace efforts. She is the author of the book My Journey Through Time - A Spiritual Memoir of Life, Death and Rebirth, The Untold Story of Sita, & When the Bright Moon Rises.

    Remembering and Giving Purpose

    Remembering and Giving Purpose

This next episode on the Significance of Our Samskaras takes us through the samskaras performed during the child’s first year of life. The child’s first look at the sun and the moon, their first visit to the temple, and their first bite of food are infused with powerful meaning when we understand why we do what we do. These are all reminders of the purpose of life and the responsibility to guide the child to that same purpose.

    Jogas filozofija. Ep.05.Koshas.

Tādā veidā no fiziskā apvalka nonākot līdz dvēselei.

Future You is So Much Happier! Karma, Habits + Yoga Philosophy

Future You is So Much Happier! Karma, Habits + Yoga Philosophy

Looking to change some habits? Pretty much anyone who practices yoga is invested in improving their discernment, discipline, and cultivating healthy ways of living. Following up from last episode on willpower, we talk about the psychology of habits, the yoga philosophy of them, and even touch on a summary of Gretchen Rubin's habits read "Better Than Before".

    • the Amy Schumer skit about a clothes shop where you shop for your "future size" inspired the title of this episode
    • what I forgot to include about willpower last time around, especially the theory of "ego depletion" (running out of willpower)
    • karma, samskaras, and other yoga philosophy that should inform how we proceed with behavior in the world
    • The Psychology of Habit by Charles Duhigg, what we learn from mental energy and habit formation and what he and The Willpower Instinct reference that may not be true
    • a summary of Better Than Before by Gretchen Rubin, provided by my friend and peer, Erin Bidlake
    • a story to sum up why we're cultivating excellent spiritual practice even in our householder lives (since we may feel like the practice isn't that spiritual!)
