49 - Arab Uprisings: Yemen | 2011 Spring
On January 27th, 2011, Yemen's people followed the example set by Tunisia and Egypt and flooded the streets, demonstrating against the incumbent regime of Ali Abdullah Saleh. Much like the other countries experiencing revolutions, Yemenis were tired of endemic unemployment, mass immiseration, and no prospects of improvements.
After months of protests and, in some cases, armed encounters between revolutionaries and the government, the people finally felled Saleh on November 23, 2011. An election was organized for February 2012, and Vice President Abrabbuh Mansur Hadi took power as interim president. What appeared to be a spring was a false dawn, however, as the post-Saleh era deteriorated rapidly into a brutal civil war. But how did we get to the current crisis in Yemen?

064 - The Old City of Sanaa
At the southern end of Arabia, Yemen was once rich from trade and frankincense. By the 11th century, it had fallen off the map, but two strong queens led it back to prosperity, particularly Arwa Al-Sulayhi, whose reign did more for Yemen than 350 years of men who followed. There's assassins, executions, heads on pikes.
Among Arwa's accomplishments was refurbishing the Great Mosque of Sana'a, Yemen's capital, whose medieval old city features gingerbread-like skyscrapers. Despite the horrors of war, Yemen perseveres.
Charlie from the Almost Forgotten podcast joins us to discuss Arwa and other historical figures that we've forgotten. Plus saltah!

Episode 32: On the Ground in Yemen
We hear very little about the war that is taking place in Yemen, which is now in its fifth year. And we hear even less about this war in the words of Yemeni’s themselves, and far less still from those who are still in Yemen. This episode represents a small effort to address this disparity.
Adel Hashem is the director of Human Needs Development in Sana’a, and organization that is working on the ground to deliver food, medical, and education support to the Yemeni people.
Though the war in Syria, and other regional conflicts have managed to grab headlines in recent years, Yemen has remained conspicuously underreported despite the fact that it has seen the largest cholera outbreak in recorded history, starvation, thousands of civilian casualties, widespread food insecurity amongst the majority of its population, and despite the fact that all of these horrors are completely man-made.
This stems in large part from the fact that the majority of the carnage in Yemen has been unleashed by Saudi Arabia and its coalition of supporters in their fight against Yemen’s Houthi rebels. Saudi Arabia is a US ally and it’s brutal air campaign (and less reported mercenary-supported ground campaign) have enjoyed the support of US and Western weapons deals, as well as intelligence and logistical support. Quite simply, the war would not be possible without the direct and ongoing support of Western governments, and principally the US, UK and France.
But we can change this.
Wie realistisch ist ein Frieden im Jemen?
#Kielipuoli: Hiirenkorvista voi käyttää sanaa musöron ruotsiksi
Miksi sanotaan koivun hiirenkorvia ruotsiksi, kysyy kuulija. Musöron sopii hyvin, vastaavat kielenhuoltajat Tarja Larsson ja Riina Heikkilä.
Lyssna på alla avsnitt i Sveriges Radio Play.
- Maziar Farzinin pakinassa on tarjolla vaaliläskiä.
He kertovat, mitä nimistöhuoltaja tekee.
Juontajana Merja Laitinen.

HORROR V. OCTORBOR: Alien vs. Predator (2004) w/Grant of History Honeys and Chip & Ironicus
This week, Grant of History Honeys and Chip & Ironicus joins us once more for Horror V. Octorbor, continuing our month-long breakdown of 'versus' movies with Alien vs. Predator! Paul W.S. Anderson's limp, ill-advised match-up movie combining Fox's biggest sci-fi monsters forgets what made the other two series good in the first place, basically remaking Resident Evil in an ancient Mayan-Aztec-Antarctican(?) temple, complete with paper-thin characters and dated effects. Still, we have a good time with our custom cocktail and drinking rules!
