Boredom Is The Birth of Art | Author Brady Smith on Parenting, Skateboarding, Kids' Books

Boredom Is The Birth of Art | Author Brady Smith on Parenting, Skateboarding, Kids' Books

What do bugs, sandwiches, skateboarding, comics, Saved By The Bell, mural painting, a chicken coop... and DADHOOD all have in common? Well, they have author and artist Brady Smith in common. (Duh.) Brady returns to the podcast to chat about many of the seemingly random things listed above... but most of all, how much he and his wife Tiffani Thiessen love being Harper and Holt's parents. After, Adam shares a straight-forward but delightfully odd Did I Just Say That Out Loud?

Despite being a rather epic milestone, Episode 100 of Modern Dadhood starts off like most other episodes, with a quick catch-up between the guys. Marc shares about his twin boys' epic Star Wars themed 6th birthday party (complete with home-made games) before they welcome author, artist, and friend to the show Brady Smith back for a second appearance. Brady shares what's new in his fatherhood journey (Spoiler alert: lots of skateboarding & Sephora), how he and Tiffani work hard to raise creative, kind, and empathetic kids, and he shares a teaser of his newest book "Bug Sandwich." Topics include:

    •  The feeling of celebrating your partner's 50th birthday
    •  Getting comfortable being the "dorky" skateboarding dad
    •  The freedom of self-employment
    •  The unexpected challenges of painting a mural
    •  The first time Brady's daughter watched "Saved By The Bell"
    •  Involving Brady's kids in his work
    •  And more!

After, Adam discloses an odd dinnertime exclamation in an installment of "Did I Just Say That Out Loud?"

Dad's New Girlfriend with Tiffani Thiessen

Tiffani Thiessen joins Chelsea this week to chat about the time she kicked her co-star off set, the mean girls of her past, and how a blind date turned into the man of her dreams. Then: A daughter is distraught when her dad starts dating too soon after the loss of her mother.  A botched blocking on Instagram blows up a friendship.  And a hairdresser’s dreams of becoming a writer may be slowly coming true.

A Streaming Cornucopia & Saved By the Bell!

A Streaming Cornucopia & Saved By the Bell!

This week, Matt and Caroline have too many things to watch! The fall harvest season has brought with it an abundance of shows and movies to watch on our various streaming services and the For The Watercooler gang tries to sort through what we've seen and what we still want to see. Later in the show, we're joined by Georgia Tech radio legend Andy Demetra to discuss Saved By the Bell!

21 Jump Street & Saved by the Bell

21 Jump Street & Saved by the Bell

Welcome back to another episode of Bad Dads Film Review, where your favorite film fanatic Dads unpack the best and worst of cinema and television. This week, it's all about schools!

To kick things off, we're hitting the books with our 'Top 5 Schools' in film and TV. We'll be rating and debating the most iconic educational institutions, from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to Rydell High. Whether they're havens for superheroes, breeding grounds for drama, or just incredibly wacky, we've got them all covered.

For our 'Movie of the Week', we're going undercover at a modern high school with the 2012 action-comedy reboot, "21 Jump Street". Starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum as rookie cops tasked with blending in as high school students, we'll discuss the movie's clever subversion of genre clichés, the dynamic comedic duo, and how the film deftly blends high-stakes action with raucous humour.

Lastly, we take a nostalgic trip down memory lane with the classic 90s kids' TV show, "Saved by the Bell". We'll chat about the iconic characters, memorable storylines, and the series' enduring appeal. We'll also reflect on how the show portrayed high school life and the lessons we - or our kids - may have taken from it.

So grab your school bag and join us for a trip back to those locker-filled corridors. Welcome to Bad Dads Film Review, where we discuss, dissect, and occasionally detest, films and TV shows from a Dad's perspective. Class is now in session!

We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. If it hasn't been completely destroyed yet you can usually find us on twitter @dads_film, on Facebook Bad Dads Film Review, on email at baddadsjsy@gmail.com or on our website baddadsfilm.com.

    Until next time, we remain...

Coming Soon: Saved by the Bellini

Coming Soon: Saved by the Bellini

This summer we're presenting something special on the Eat Your Words feed. This show has always been about exploring and celebrating the people and processes behind your favorite cookbooks. Over the course of the next 7 episodes, we're going deep with one author and their most recent work.

Our host is John deBary, semi-retired bartender and author of the Drink What You Want. Saved by the Bellini  is his latest cocktail book, and as you might imagine, it’s all about the nineties. He uses the magic of cocktails as a way to explore this totally tubular decade. Saved by the Bellini: The Podcast invites you behind-the-scenes, into the process of writing the book. Each episode John will interview someone who was integral to the process, including his editor, illustrator, historians, and even some people who tended bar in the 90's. So join John for a radical ride back through this super sweet decade. And if you don’t like the sound of that, that’s like, your opinion man.

Saved by the Bellini is powered by Simplecast.

Episode 122: East WillyB written by Julia Ahumada Grob (Mr. Iglesias) & Yamin Segal (The Wonder Years)

Episode 122: East WillyB written by Julia Ahumada Grob (Mr. Iglesias) & Yamin Segal (The Wonder Years)

This month’s pilot is East WillyB written by Julia Ahumada Grob (Mr. Iglesias) & Yamin Segal  (The Wonder Years). It’s a half hour comedy based on their indie web series of the same name. It revolves around a truly unconventional family, dysfunctional neighbors who populate the last hold-out dive bar in gentrified Brooklyn. Together they’ll face life’s challenges — from love, friendship, and legacy, to family and change — realizing they can only do it if they lean on each other; their chosen family. East WillyB was set up at ABC with ABC Studios and Korin Williams and Moonque Nash attached to produce.

We had a great cast for this one including Rene Rosado (The Conners), Haskiri Velazquez (Saved By The Bell), Greg Santos (The Neighborhood), Roberta Valderrama (American Princess), The Kid Mero (Desus & Mero), Jamila Velazquez (West Side Story), Ahmed Al-Kadri (David Diamond Hands), and Andrew Reich with stage directions.

    One Drink Hill

    One Drink Hill

John deBary, author of “Drink What You Want” and the upcoming “Saved by the Bellini” sits down with Greg and Sother to talk about, what else? The 90s. Bucket hats, low rise jeans, Melrose Place and how all those relate to fun tasty cocktails abound in this episode. Plus, they talk about two things that have proven surprisingly tricky when it comes to the world of cocktails - taking care of yourself and having fun. Alternatively goofy and serious, this is one chat that pairs well with nostalgia and an old boyband cassette.

Remember Saved by the Bell? (with Cobie Smulders)

Remember Saved by the Bell? (with Cobie Smulders)

Fans of the Marvel Universe, "How I Met Your Mother" and Canada rejoice because this week we are joined by actress and all-around great person, Cobie Smulders! On this episode of the podcast, Vanessa discusses why one of the greatest nights of her life was spent watching THE BODYGUARD at Cobie and Taran's house, Cobie gives us the sweet details about the Tom Cruise holiday cake and Jonah recalls his teenage fascination with Steven Seagal. Even though Cobie grew up without cable television in a rural part of the Canadian outback, she did have access to a little show called SAVED BY THE BELL and we discuss how it informed Cobie's perception of the United States and teenage life in general. To bring things full circle, Cobie also recounts the time that she met Mark-Paul Gosselaar as an adult... and had a very different experience than Vanessa did. Finally we play a powerful round of CHANGE DOT DORK where we review petitions about a "How I Met Your Mother" reunion, bringing back chicken noodle soup at Tim Horton's and, finally, the three of us try to give a definitive answer of the age-old question: Is lasagna technically cake?
