Interview with Her Head's On Fire

Interview with Her Head's On Fire
We had the pleasure of interviewing Her Head’s On Fire over Zoom video.

Indie rock, of all stripes, is far too long in the tooth —and the classic back catalogs far too crowded— fo half measures: If we are to have new "left of the dial" songs in an age where the wry cleverness and heart-on-sleeve (or heart-patch-on-messenger-bag?) vulnerability of yore have listed into a kind of sardonic nihilism, then those songs must be full of that strange alchemic mix of chords and melodies that make hearts flutter and souls soar—they must be incandescent; bright flares that light us up and burn away the pretenses and bullshit the world circa 2022 seems determined to encase us in.

Enter Her Head's On Fire — a fiery, enlivening quartet with an unfuckwithable pedigree (Saves the Day, Garrison, Small Brown Bike, The Bomb, Gay for Johnny Depp) that serves as the DNA for a 10-track genetic splicing debut full-length, College Rock & Clove Cigarettes, that is not only simultaneously familiar and transcendent but also very, very good.

If you ever thrilled to the anthems of Samiam, pounded the steering wheel to Superchunk, reveled in the waves of Dinosaur Jr's melodic fuzz, gladly went over to the Farside, got down to some Elvis Costello, or can remember where you were the first time you heard Sense Field…well, then Her Head's On Fire's heart-seeking post-post-hardcore, "emo"tive rock stemwinders will be the best thing to happen to you in a very long time.

Building on the promise of an auspicious bow via last year's well-received split with living legend J. Robbins, College Rock & Clove Cigarettes is a beguiling and powerful statement: Her Head's On Fire has your number and a container of clean sonic kerosine. All you have to do is follow the light, open up to the real, and find your way back to the messy, anthem-inspiring glory of love once again.

Ep. 183: Saves The Day w/ Bryan Newman

Ep. 183: Saves The Day w/ Bryan Newman

Saves the Day is an American rock band from Princeton, New Jersey, that formed in 1997. They released their debut studio album, Can't Slow Down, in 1998. It was followed by Through Being Cool in 1999, which featured their first single, "Shoulder to the Wheel". Stay What You Are was released in 2001, peaking at No. 100 on the Billboard 200. It spawned two successful music videos on MTV2, for the singles "At Your Funeral" and "Freakish", and has since sold 300,000 copies.

Ep. 135: The Stryder w/ Scottie Redix

Ep. 135: The Stryder w/ Scottie Redix

Before we start, feel free to support the podcast if you’ve been listening for a while by signing up for my Patreon for $1 and I will love you forever.

The Stryder was an American band hailing from Long Island, New York. The band was formed by Peter Toh and Scottie Redix in 1999 after their previous project, Yearly, disbanded following the departure of bassist Eben D'amico, who left to join Saves the Day. They added a vocalist and bassist, John Johansen and Nick Wendel respectively. They were on Elkion Records and then Equal Vision Records. The band toured extensively and began writing new material in 2001. They added former Glassjaw drummer Durijah Lang, and moved Scottie Redix to guitar and backing vocals. In mid-2001 the band parted ways with vocalist John Johansen.  You’ll learn about the rest in the interview.

There’s a fire alarm dying in the background the whole time and I tried my best to kill it as much as possible but it creeps through. But you’ll hear odd cuts in what Scottie’s saying. That’s where I’m slicing the audio.

Thank you to Chris Payne for the intro to Scottie who I got on the Skype and this is what we chat about:

    • Being friends with and a fan of Glassjaw
    • Brand New
    • What local drummers influenced him
    • Yearly
    • Eben’s personality and how it influenced Saves The Day
    • Going from drums to guitar
    • 911 changing music
    • Their relationship with Saves the Day
    • What was their relationship like being on Equalvision
    • At Your Funeral being about them
    • People having a ton of footage that they haven’t digitized
    • Being mysteriously sabotaged
    • And a ton more
