Where expertise and tech meet: AI in healthcare

Where expertise and tech meet: AI in healthcare

It's not entirely surprising that AI in healthcare is considered an enormous opportunity. Doctors and clinicians are overworked and stressed, and patients are expecting ever quicker and more effective diagnosis and treatment. At the same time, healthcare survives on efficiency and moving patients and staff where they are needed as quickly as possible. It's a perfect opportunity to take some of the strain off the human, and a wide variety of AI-based solutions are developing everything from analyzing scans to setting up appointments and assisting ward rounds. Using AI to 'oil the machine' while respecting and amplifying human expertise is an exciting prospect, and seemingly an ideal case study for the current capabilities of AI. So what can other organizations in different fields learn from the way healthcare is embracing AI and the learnings they've taken away so far? Joining us today to explain is General Electric Healthcare's Andy Cachaldora.

This is Technology Now, a weekly show from Hewlett Packard Enterprise. Every week we look at a story that's been making headlines, take a look at the technology behind it, and explain why it matters to organisations and what we can learn from it.

X-ray histotomography: Characterising every cell of a whole organism

X-ray histotomography: Characterising every cell of a whole organism

Diagnosing diseases requires understanding of how cells respond to different medical conditions. Histology is a common two-dimensional way of studying such disease abnormalities, however major diseases are associated with three-dimensional cellular and tissue architectural changes.

Dr Cheng’s team has created X-ray histotomography, the first 3D imaging method that allows digital cell and tissue diagnostics from entire tissue samples and small organisms.

Your Pediatrician's Role During and After Cancer Treatment: Dr. May Carter

Your Pediatrician's Role During and After Cancer Treatment: Dr. May Carter

011 - Dr. May Carter, a pediatrician, explains the role of the pediatrician following a  pediatric cancer diagnosis and after remission. She discusses the sensitivity pediatricians have during treatment for kids with cancer inside and outside of the doctor's office. Additionally, Dr. May Carter expands on how pediatricians take care of their patients (survivors) following chemotherapy, radiation, or other types of treatment that lead to remission and beyond. Due to the sensitivities and possibilities of reoccurring cancers or relapse in children exposed to the world of oncology, they are treated slightly different when a seemingly simple issue might arise.

Episode 10: Mazen Abufadil, Photography Teacher at Holland Hall

Episode 10: Mazen Abufadil, Photography Teacher at Holland Hall

You’re listening to Tulsa Talks, a TulsaPeople Podcast, episode 10. I’m your host, Anna Bennett.

This episode is brought to you by Gilcrease Museum, presenting the exhibit Americans All!

On this season one finale, I talk with Mazen Abufadil, an artist, educator and immigrant, whose work is currently featured at the Gilcrease Museum.

Plus, Jerry Wofford takes a look back at the best musical moments of 2018.

There are two things I notice immediately about Mazen Abufadil — he’s got a quiet voice, and a curious mind.

After finishing the interview and leaving the office, he was back moments later to share an observation he’d has while looking at a nearby sycamore tree, just to make sure I knew his updated viewpoint; event though the mics were off.

But that’s just who Mazen is — an educator, as much as an artist, one who’s generous with his time and knowledge. His unflappable patience, no doubt a boon in the classroom at Holland Hall, is honed by raising four children of his own.

Mazen was born in Lebanon, and spent his earliest years in Beirut. But life changed forever for Mazen and his family in the late 1970s. The Lebanese Civil war broke out, bringing with it years of violent conflict. Mazen’s family fled to the United States. He shared his recollections of arriving in Tulsa during our interview.

Thanks for listening to Tulsa Talks! We’ve had a blast bringing you Season One; it’s been an adventure and a labor of love for all of us. And, I’m thrilled to announce that Season Two begins on January 2nd, and we’ve got some super awesome guests on the roster that I can’t tell you about yet, but that you’re going to love.

If you’ve enjoyed this podcast, then all we want for Christmas is a rating, review, subscription or share — we’d love to find some positive feedback in our stockings.

Every episode, we play you out with some local music. In the spirit of the season, today’s selection is “Hey Skinny Santa” from JD McPherson’s new Christmas album, “Socks.”

Daniel Amen - screening the brain to optimize health and longevity
Dr. Daniel Amen is a polarizing figure. He is hugely popular, with a string of successful clinics, books and TV shows - but derided by some of his professional peers. The founder of mental and physical health centers, Amen Clinics, he believes traditional psychiatry is missing an important component. Dr. Amen says many psychiatrists overlook an extremely important tool of thorough brain analysis. A double board-certified psychiatrist and clinical neuroscientist, he uses single-photon emission computerized tomography (SPECT) scans - which measure brain activity - to address issues like depression, anxiety and attention deficit disorder. In this LLAMA podcast interview with Peter Bowes, Dr. Amen explains his idea of a brain-healthy lifestyle - and why it is key pillar in the quest for a long health span. He also answers critics who have suggested that his methods lack scientific validity.Fit, Healthy & Happy Podcast
