    Book of Mark, Part 4

    Book of Mark, Part 4
Pastor Marc Sharp continues with Part 4 of the current series that is an epic journey through the New Testament Gospel of Mark, verse by verse. The book of Mark was most likely the first one written, and is generally attibuted to John Mark, a close associate of Peter, and also of Paul and Barnabas. The Gospel of Mark is all about Jesus and the good news (Gospel) of the kingdom of God. How do we become members of this kingdom? Now there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, saying, "Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are – the Holy One of God!" But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be quiet, and come out of him!" And when the unclean spirit had convulsed him and cried out with a loud voice, he came out of him. Then they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, "What is this? What new doctrine is this? For with authority He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him." And immediately His fame spread throughout all the region around Galilee (Mark 1:21-28). Faith Is A Daring Way - Audio

Faith Is A Daring Way - Audio
Jesus taught with authority and cast a demon out of a man in the Synagogue. In the cosmic struggle between light and dark, he was obviously on the side of light (even though he wasn't yet known as the Word of God which spoke creation into existence). He was a powerful force for light, and yet his detractors began to spread as fast as his admirers. Religious leaders feared him because he threatened the norm. Folks may have followed him instead of them, and so they responded out of fear. Faith is not the way of fear. Faith is the way of boldness and daring. It took boldness and daring for the man with the unclean spirit to enter the Synagogue. He was unclean and so shouldn't have been there, but he came seeking healing from Jesus. When we see people enter our churches who are unclean, sinners in need of healing, folks without faith, the fearful response is to have them leave so that we don't get dragged down by their unbelief or wayward living. The faithful response is to say "come, welcome". If sinners can't come seek healing in the church, where can they go? "Come and be healed by Jesus, even as we are being healed by Jesus." Another fearful response we have in the church is our response to other churches. We often don't minister together with other churches, afraid of their differences, afraid that members from our church may like them better, or afraid that one of us is doing things wrong. That is how the scribes and the Pharisees responded to Jesus. A faithful response is for us to work together. Jesus can bring greater healing through us when we work together as one church, when we respond with boldness and daring.
