This pilot uses drones to save lives in the mountains

"Had we not used the technology to find them, they undoubtedly would have perished," Kyle Nordfors said during this conversation.

Kyle talks with Jillian Angeline about his work piloting drones with Weber County Search and Rescue in Utah to save lives.  Kyle is the Drone Team Coordinator at the Sheriff's Office, he's also the UAS Chairman for the Mountain Rescue Association, and a 737 Captain at Alaska Airlines.

Kyle says once you get a taste of aviation, flying one type of aircraft isn't enough.  Can you relate?  He also shares tips for hikers heading out into the wilderness, and offers important advice for drone pilots: understand how outside temperatures impact your UAS.

If you want to see drone footage of some of Weber County Search and Rescue operations, check out Jillian Angeline's YouTube page to watch this episode.

The One And Only Sniff Tank

The One And Only Sniff Tank

Put an idea into my head and I will run with it.  It's a blessing and a curse.  My friend Beth, a search and rescue professional, came over with a few boards she called a "scent wall". This is used in search and rescue.  Listen how this idea of a scent wall became what I call a Sniff Tank!  It took several months to make in my spare time, and the dayCARE pups are loving it!  Who knew while building this project, I would be asked how many toilets I am installing?

The Legend of the Feu Follet

The Legend of the Feu Follet

Dan has two fun stories this week for you! The first is the story of a convent in Milwaukee that reportedly experienced over a year’s worth of paranormal activity in the mid-19th century. Then we hear the cajun legend of the Feu Follet,  a mysterious light from Louisiana folklore described as a mysterious and paranormal “sinister force” that leads people to their deaths.  Then Lynze gives us three tales! Her first two surround the hospitality industry and her last story is a head scratcher- is it an attachment, a haunted house or something else?!

    What to listen for:

"I appreciate the fact that our little collaborative thing has allowed us to have some of these really, really hard conversations in a public format."

Welcome to episode 100 of the K9 Detection Collaborative with the Dames of Detection themselves - Robin Greubel, Stacy Barnett, and Crystal Wing!

It feels like just yesterday when our hosts first set out to create a space for sharing the wonders and challenges of canine detection. This episode peels back the curtain on the competitive spirit alive in the world of canine detection. They navigate the tightrope that separates testing from competing, and how these impact our dogs and us as handlers.

Our hosts look deeper into the world of dog obedience, dispelling myths and reaffirming the power of proper training. The conversation extends beyond the agility course, touching on the essential, yet often under-appreciated emotional and financial investments we make for the love of the sport and our canine companions.

Wrapping up, the Dames of Detection tackle the seldom-discussed topic of burnout and growth within the dog training community, drawing parallels with their experiences. All that said, the stress of competition is counterbalanced by the joy of breakthroughs and the camaraderie that only a group of like-hearted dog lovers can provide. Thank YOU, listeners, for your continued support of the podcast! Here’s to another year of episodes filled with insights, laughter, and the occasional bark in the background!

    Reflections on 2023

    Reflections on 2023

    What to listen for:

"As a trainer, no matter what you're doing with your training or where you are, what level you are, how advanced you are, how new you are, whatever, it should always be about growth because if you're not growing, you're stagnating.”

In this episode of K9 Detection Collaborative, we’re treated to the return of all three of the Dames of Detection - Robin Greubel, Stacy Barnett, and Crystal Wing! They reflect on a year of personal growth, both in life and in the realm of dog training, unpacking the struggles and triumphs of asking for help and delegating tasks. They weave these personal anecdotes into a broader discussion on dog training, emphasizing the goal of behavior training over the specifics of methodology, and the adaptability required of a trainer. Listen in as they candidly explore what it means to be a positive reinforcement trainer in the bite sports world, navigating skepticism and shifting perceptions of what's achievable.

Our hosts celebrate the joys of dog training, but also the realities of imposter syndrome and the delicate balance between personal criticism and external feedback. They highlight the inventive work of fellow trainers and the importance of tinkering with training techniques. The essence of this chat is the shared journey of growth and the power of community support, as we all navigate the ebbs and flows of not only honing our craft, but life itself!

    What to listen for:

“Conservation dogs have been around for maybe 20, 30 years, starting to grow in popularity. But more conversations need to be happening, and dogs are so amazing, and such valuable tools.”

Julia is no stranger to this unique world of canine detection and conservation work. As an intern at Robin's farm, she's seen it all; starting with the chaotic antics of nine Labrador puppies. But that's not all. Julia's commitment to conservation extends to turtle surveys and environmental research, all with the help of her skilled pooches. Through her work, Julia not only champions conservation but also embodies the essence of our shared love for dogs and their remarkable abilities.

    The Ghost of Jayuro Road

SCARED TO DEATH IS EXPLICIT IN EVERY WAY. PLEASE TAKE CARE WHILE LISTENING.

Dan shares the story of a  Korean horror lore that many people claim to be much more than an urban legend. And then, we get a little Lovecraftian, and explore a mystery that revolves around the possibility of horrible things that may live in the ocean depths.  Lynze shares just one story about a probable alien abduction and how this may be happening to one family over many years.

5th annual Bad Magic Giving Tree! This is our chance to collectively give back to our own community!  Like all of the previous years, we will be using the December Patreon donation to kick this off. We estimate that to be about $13k. If any fans would like to donate to the cause, as they have in years past, we are, again, only accepting Amazon gift cards.  If you would like to donate, go to amazon.com and purchase a gift card. When you fill out the box of whom to send this gift card to, simply enter the following email address: givingtree2023@badmagicproductions.com.  On Tuesday  November 21st at 12:00 noon PT, we will be accepting applications on our website, badmagicmerch.com. THIS WILL BE THE ONE AND ONLY WAY TO SUBMIT YOUR FAMILY.This year, the first 30 families to apply will receive help. The submission form will be live on our website until we have 30 families. Once 30 families have applied, the application will not allow anyone to fill it out- it will automatically close. Last year, the slots filled up in less than 5 minutes. If you are going to be at work during this time, you can ask a family member or friend to sign up on your behalf. If you have received from the giving tree in the past, please allow space for others to receive help here. We will be shopping and sending out gifts from December 1st thru December 17th. We look forward to bringing our community together once again, to love and support one another.

Standup:If you want to see a very different side of Dan than you see here and possibly see Lynze in the crowd (she is always happy to say HI!) get on over to   dancummins.tv for ticket links to shows. You can find Dan in Providence, Chicago and more!  Reminder that Dan is not touring in 2024 so this is your last chance to see him!

Everest News! Death & Drama on Annapurna in the Mount Everest Himalaya with Everest Chronicler for Outside Online Alan Arnette #everest #mountains #annapurna

HERE'S MY FULL CONVERSATION with Alan Arnette on YouTube:
    https://youtu.be/WIk67aEg0sI

There’s Been Loss of Life and Intense Drama on Annapurna and in the Mount Everest and 8000 meter peaks region of the Nepal Himalaya.

A veteran climber is dead, another miraculously rescued, and multiple others are lucky to be alive after a tragic few days in the Himalayas.

As the deadliest of the 8000 meter peaks Annapurna has of late become an object of desire for a wider and larger group of the new era of mountaineers, ticking off peaks on their checklist.

In recent years, guides have supplied high levels of support and supplemental oxygen to make the peak more accessible to less experienced climbers. Of the 395 total summits, 129 (33 percent) have occurred in the past three years.

HERE'S AN INTERVIEW with one of the world’s most respected chroniclers of Mount Everest, Alan Arnette WHO is reporting on this spring’s Everest and Himalayan climbing season for OUTSIDE ONLINE

We’ll talk about the miraculous rescue effort on Annapurna where Indian climber Anurag Maloo was found alive after spending three days inside a crevasse on Annapurna. Angela Benavides of Explorers Web has reported that Maloo was 50 meters in the crevasse, found barely alive by a rescue team led by Adam Bielecki - mind boggling….defying all odds…hope to bring more on that soon.

As well as the loss that sent shockwaves through the himalayan climbing community, the ever popular and 10-time Everest summiter, Noel Hanna of Ireland, 56, died in his tent at Camp 4 after summiting without supplemental oxygen.

We also discuss the summit of Manaslu by Felix Berg, as well as the sherpas expanding role in the world of 8000 meter peak guiding. And Alan has written a book.
