Instead, he found solace in consistent running for stress relief and developed a newfound love for health and wellness, inspired by his house parents at Place of Hope. As he steps us through his transformation from a struggling foster kid to a Exercise science graduate with aspirations of attending PT school, learn about the crucial role a positive environment and dedicated individuals can play in shaping young lives.

Australian Sikhs, along with millions of others around the world, will vote this Friday in a referendum to establish a separate Sikh state in India. Sikhs have faced increasing discrimination in India, especially with the growth of Hindu nationalism.
"I would lose direction for a split second. But then that fire, that passion inside of me, was always that guiding compass. She was my compass."
In 1969, a group of young Black educators and students in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn founded a pan-African organization called The East. They wanted to take control of their community but knew the only way to do that was to create businesses and institutions founded by, run by, and made for them.
The East became a mecca of Black pride and celebration. They created schools centered around African teachings, a food cooperative, a publishing house, music and dance programs, and a world-famous jazz club. Even though the organization no longer exists, many can still feel the spirit of The Eastin Central Brooklyn today.
So, when Black-Owned Brooklyn founders, Tayo Giwa and Cynthia Gordy Giwa heard about The East through word of mouth at Brooklyn’s Annual African Arts Festival, they knew it was a story that needed to be told to the masses.
On this episode of Into America, Trymaine speaks with Tayo and Cynthia about their upcoming documentary, “The Sun Rises in The East”, which tells the story of this self-sufficient community. They talk about the film and the seeds planted by The East throughoutBrooklyn today. Trymaine also speaks with Fela Barclift, a former member of The East and co-founder of Afro-centric childhood center, Little Sun People. She talks about the power of the movement and what The East meant to her as an educator.

Today’s episode is an interview with Annette Downey, the Executive Director of Community Living Services, an organization that provides Independent Support Coordinators, (abbreviated as ISCs) for Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, and Kent Counties in Michigan. And as of July 2021, CLS has expanded their services to Ottawa County.
For non-Michiganders tuning in I think you will find this interview relevant as well. No matter where you live in the United States or its territories, people with disabilities receiving Medicaid funded supports have the right to request an ISC. Annette will share with you the advantage of working with a support coordinator who is independent and serves as your advocate.
For those of living in Ottawa County you will soon have a choice to make. You now have the option to select your own coordinator via Community Living Services. ISCs are self-employed, extensively trained and knowledgeable. Being self-employed they are focused on helping you achieve the quality of life you want without conflict of interest in recommending a services based upon cost, or agency bias either for or against a service provider.
Making an educated decision is in your best interest. It is my goal that this conversation with Annette Downey will inform you about the benefits of choosing an independent support coordinator through Community Living Supports.

Everyone benefits when all are included!
Many of us have experienced challenges obtaining employment. If you have a developmental or intellectual disability those challenges take on a whole new dimension. You have skills. You have abilities and interests. You want to “give back” to your community and be accepted for who you are.
But too often the world does not understand your value… or what you have to offer.
Today we speak with Dirk Bakhuysen with Beyond26 and Rev. Bill Gaventa who helped create Putting Faith to Work, the program Beyond26 uses to identify work opportunities and match individuals to jobs where they will feel valued as a team member.
I think you will find the Beyond26 approach to matching individuals with job opportunities exciting! When employers and job seekers put their faith to work, miracles often happen!
