Self-Reclamation + Permission to Change Your Mind

Self-Reclamation + Permission to Change Your Mind

In this final episode in our Water Medicine mini-series, we discuss the Selkie + the Moon archetypes. The one invites us into full ownership of our whole selves and the other invites us into embracing change both within and without ourselves.

“We want to be present with these changing moments because then we can be a part of it in a co-creative way instead of just letting it happen to us.”

    we discuss —

    • the Selkie invitation to reclaim yourself
    • the courage needed to put lost desire back on the table
    • how self-reclamation can disrupt the status quo
    • one of my personal Selkie stories
    • embracing the Moon as an archetype of change + permission to change
    • why waiting is sometimes the best way to participate in change
    • how the Moon invites us to be present to what our body’s limitations

Imogen Bright Moon: Weaver, Writer, Artist-Maker

For this episode we had the pleasure of speaking to Imogen Bright Moon, an artist-maker who uses spinning and weaving processes to transform raw materials into exquisitely crafted textile objects. Her contemporary weave practice combines traditional skills, and a storytelling sensibility, gathered from her background in costume design, fashion pattern cutting and puppetry, tailored to the needs of her young family.  Working exclusively with ethically sourced materials and suppliers, every step of the creation of her work – from field to final piece – is transparent and traceable.

Imogen is also a writer and poet, and her work is recently included in Wagtail: The Roma Woman’s Poetry Anthology, edited by Jo Clement, and published by Butcher’s Dog Magazine with support from ERIAC, and available for purchase online.

    279 - Celtic Mythology

    279 - Celtic Mythology

Get ready for a brain buster. Or at least prepare to witness my brain being busted. Celtic mythology is... tricky to understand. And no one understands perfectly because the source material is scarce.  A LOT has been written about Celtic mythology but so much of it is conjecture presented as fact. The ancient Celts themselves didn't write anything down. Their enemies did. As did the Catholic monks who came to island to conquer a people the Roman army could not. Today we familiarize ourselves with Ireland - land most associated with the Celts and find out why Ireland is most strongly associated with Celtic culture when Celtic tribes lived as far away as Asia Minor. Who were these people? What did they believe? Why don't we know more about them? And what the Hell is a Selkie, Spriggan, or a  Dullahan?  So much mystery and madness explored today.

The Bad Magic Charity of the month is Love Thy Neighbor! We'll  be giving $15,500 to this Denver-area based 501(3c) nonprofit dedicated to working with local businesses to hand out free food to the homeless. They also give clothing, shoes, blankets, etc. Go to https://ltnsocks.com/

The Selkie of Beinn nam Mic Caillte (Halloween Horror) - Story #11

In a loch in the lee of a mountain in the Scottish Highlands there lives an ancient king. Banished by his people millennia ago, these days he survives on trickery, deceit... and the flesh of human men. This Halloween, a group of friends meet a stranger on the mountain trail. Together, they take shelter in a ramshackle bothy on the edges of the loch. But, are the legends really true? And will these four friends last the night? This bone-chilling tale is based on Scottish folklore, and is a Stories from the Hearth Halloween special.

Stories from the Hearth is an immersive storytelling experience featuring truly original fiction backed by thoughtfully produced soundscapes. The aim of this podcast is to rekindle its listeners' love for the ancient art of storytelling (and story-listening), and to bring some small escapism to the frantic energies of the modern world. Stories is the brainchild of queer punk poet, environmentalist, and anarchist Cal Bannerman. Vive l'art!

Her Eyes Held all The Mourning of the Darkest Sea

In this episode we wander along the coastlines of many Northern places; these are often stark and lonely places, the people who live there quiet to outsiders, but somehow a tale is always shared around a campfire as the whiskey passes from hand to hand.

The tales of of the SEAL PEOPLE, the special magical selkies sometimes called silkies, sometimes thought to be quite different from the seals you normally see tearing apart your fishing nets. Don't run afoul of these beings or you might rue the day! Legend has it that these are the beings made from the souls of the drowned, those lost at sea, now magically changed.

Join me on this little walk as we share the tale of the Seal People.

    236. La Selkie y el Pescador (Leyenda Escocesa)

Debo irme a casa.

Tending, Sending and Mending with Juliette Woods

Today's podcast guest, Juliette Woods, is an incredible mix of mystic, mother, spiritual guide, creative, and earth spiritualist.

In our conversation we talk about...

    • The concept of a 'slow-cooked' life and regenerative self care
    • Tending to ourselves by tuning into our innate capacities, seeking emancipation from the paradigm of overdoing
    • The recognition that we are re-learning how to be in circle and the balance between patience, openness, compassion, boundaries, and...well, we'll figure it out eventually!
    • Considering what is means to 'hold space' or be 'sending' energy to someone #gettinspiritual #woohoo
    • Recognizing the places we need to perhaps reclaim ourselves
    • Cultural appropriation and a gentle invitation to be ever more vigilant with our language
    • Making conscious transformations in your business - even when it's a bit challenging
    • Being in service to LIFE through acts of connection and contemplation (and some good ole ironic humour) and Juliette's photo project and 'devotion of trash removal on the West Coast of Canada', Lost & Found. Please Claim.

We cover a lot of ground in this long-form conversation that feels like a lengthy stroll down the beach on a drizzly day...picking up wise little stones...giving the selkies a wave hello and wink or two...remembering the seal skin tucked away in our own closets.

    Lore: Selkies

    Lore: Selkies

Long before man searched for intelligent life in space, he wondered about the ocean and what creatures roamed just below the surface. In this episode, we'll walk along the rocky shores of Scotland and have the selkies tell us their story.
