[HORS SERIE] How animals perceive the world with Ed Yong

[HORS SERIE] How animals perceive the world with Ed Yong

    68. ANIMALS: Oscar, the Cat Who Could Predict Death

    68. ANIMALS: Oscar, the Cat Who Could Predict Death

Oscar seemed like an ordinary kitten when he was adopted by Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation center in Providence, RI. But the staff and residents at Steere House quickly suspected Oscar had a unique ability. He seemed to be able to predict when someone was going to die.

Heads up, this episode is more speculative than usual. And it includes a lot of talk of death. Keep that in mind while listening.

The Art Gallery You Can Sniff

The Art Gallery You Can Sniff

If you've ever wondered why scent isn't incorporated into other experiential endeavors like cinema, museums, reenactments, or  performance itself, you are not alone. However, Andreas Keller, owner and curator of Olfactory Art Keller  decided to make it real, with a downtown gallery in NYC dedicated to the art of smell. He tells us all about it in this episode, as well as how and why everyone smells things differently (something he learned from fruit flies), the trouble with smells, the lack of critical vocabulary around smells, NFTs: are they good or evil for art smells?, and how people interact with things differently once smells are involved.

Whiff-Busting With Neurologist & Author Rachel Herz

Would you rather lose your cell phone or your sense of smell? Apparently, a lot of chuckleheads would be OK with losing their sense of smell. BUT! Did you know just how integrated your sense of smell is to your mental and physical well-being, your ability to sniff out an ideal mate, and experiencing a full spectrum of emotions (and flavors!) in 4kHD? Tim Apple could never.

Neurologist and smell-specialist Rachel Herz kindly blows our smooth little minds with heaps of information about just how underrated and underestimated the sense of smell is — like how pheromones are a myth, how you can detect various diseases and illness through body odor, how hanging out with babies and other pregnant women can make you more fertile, and how Big Brother may very well soon be using odor profiles to track us. Listen to this episode and never take your sense of smell for granted again! And then immediately go read Rachel Herz's books: The Scent of Desire, Why We Eat What We Eat, and That's Disgusting.
