    In this episode, hosts Gretchen Vierstra and Rachel Bozek welcome returning guest Keri Wilmot. Keri, a pediatric occupational therapist, shares some of the ways the holidays can bring on sensory overload. E 148 Sensory Interior Design

    E 148 Sensory Interior Design

    Have you ever walked into a room or place of business and not felt comfortable? Not for any reason you could pinpoint, it just felt "off". Do you sleep well? Maybe it is something about how your bedroom is designed that gets in the way of your sleep.

    When I started working at my last high school, I decided to paint my office a fun color. I chose a neon green color and it was quite the conversation starter. Most students thought it was cool, but one day a student stood in my doorway and he said, "I could never go in here." I asked him why and he said, "It is just too loud." I had never thought about how the color of my office could be a barrier to someone feeling comfortable in my office. I wanted to be fun or pick a trendy color. I have been in classrooms, where I feel too closed in.

    After visiting with my guest, Carolyn Feder Gold, I realized that many students and young people are affected by the environment of their school and home and they may not even realize what is negatively triggering them. Their parents might not know about it either. This is such an important topic to consider for your homes, schools and/or your places of business.

    5 Ways To Cope With Sensory Overload

    5 Ways To Cope With Sensory Overload

    Sensory overload. It occurs when one or more of our senses is overstimulated, taking in too much information for our brains to process. Pre-parenthood this wasn't a big deal, because we had the benefits of rest, quiet, and time on our side. But in motherhood... we now process that input MUCH differently and the shift happens fast! In this episode, Jacqueline shares five ways to cope with sensory overload when mom-life gets a little too overwhelming.

    New Visions for Rwandan Filmmakers with Ganza Moise

    New Visions for Rwandan Filmmakers with Ganza Moise

    Today, I’m joined by Ganza Moise, a Rwandan writer and filmmaker, to talk about his art and the Rwandan film community. We unpack the themes and artistic direction of two of his recent independent films, “Sensory Overload” and “Mazunga.” Ganza describes the unexpected ways that he frames characters and explores philosophical, existential questions that so many of us grapple with. He also touches on the transitional nature of his generation and highlights some of the filmmaking and distribution challenges in Rwanda.

    “Sensory Overload” is an audio-visual experience based on Natacha Muzira’s poem about the liberating power of imagination. He explores similar themes in “Mazunga,” which is about a taxi motorcyclist who is forced to face his internal conflicts when the whole world shuts down during the pandemic. In our conversation, Ganza explains why he’s drawn to these types of stories and breaks down his artistic process.

    I ask Ganza about the generation of Rwandans who teeter the Millennials/Gen-Z line. He illustrates how he and his peers are doing a lot of talking, thinking, and creating to find their cultural identity in a country that is very ambitious, but also mourning the atrocities of genocide from the not-to-distant past.

    Part of the country’s rapid growth is reflected in the film scene. Ganza is the co-founder of KIRURI mfn, an arts production and distribution company. He shares his insight into how Rwandan filmmakers are getting their work in front of larger audiences and how he’s working to amplify their art.

    Episode 56: Managing Hyperactivity in Kids

    The transition back to school is often a difficult one for kids who are hyperactive. Hyperactivity is often recognised when a child transitions into school because they are required to sit still, listen & concentrate.

    In this episode, I discuss the  common triggers for a hyperactive child, including:

    • Dietary triggers, including food additives, food intolerances,  food chemical sensitivities, and sugar intake;
    • Lifestyle triggers that include inactivity in children and excess screen time;
    • Mood disorders and how sensory processing disorder, especially sensory seeking children can exhibit hyperactive behaviours;
    • Neuro-developmental conditions such as ADHD and ASD and the links to hyperactivity.

    I also discuss how to manage hyperactivity naturally in children through:

    • Dietary changes, and the specific food additives to reduce;
    • Focusing on whole foods & reducing packaged foods;
    • The impact the gut can have on kids mood and behaviour;
    • The importance of sleep, plus my #1 tip when it comes to improving your child's sleep;

    Christel Seeberger - Sensory Friendly Solutions

    Christel Seeberger - Sensory Friendly Solutions

    Working in health care as an Occupational Therapist for over 25 years, Christel Seeberger saw how sensory sensitivity and sensory overload caused people to feel overwhelmed and anxious.

    It made people feel isolated and alone. They stopped doing what was meaningful and important in their daily lives. Families ceased doing things together.  Mature adults stopped travelling.  People even avoided going out in their local communities. School became a place of stress for children, youth and adults. Workplaces became intolerable and workers left the workforce.

    With adult-onset hearing loss, Christel understands these problems personally; she also experiences sensory sensitivity and sensory overload.

    Christel Seeberger founded Sensory Friendly Solutions in 2016 to make sensory-friendly solutions readily available to people, businesses and organizations.

    Sensory Friendly Solutions exists to help you; people, businesses and organizations, to find the sensory-friendly solutions you want and need, and to empower yourself with knowledge and awareness to change, and together, we make the world more sensory-friendly, accessible and inclusive.

    030: Terry's Takes 3.0

    030: Terry's Takes 3.0

    We are here to telling stories about what Post Concussion Syndrome (PCS) has meant to us and our guests. The conversations are around the trails, the challenges, the outcomes, and the lessons learned.

    The conversations are real, raw and uncensored from both the survivor and caregiver perspectives.

    Through the podcast we aim to:

    1. Help to others going through Post Concussion Syndrome and develop community through our stories and those of our guests.
    2. Provide a greater sense of awareness with the "Invisible Injury". Living through this has clearly indicated that American society has very little understanding.
    3. Get help ourselves! We hope to learn by doing this and hopefully it will lead to further understanding.

    Today, Terry and I are back for another episode of "Terry's Takes". This is where I bring up 3 topics to Terry around Traumatic Brain Injuries and we get to hear initial responses and reactions.

    In this particular session we talk about an upcoming conference that Terry and I will take part in. How does she feel about doing it? What does she hope to gain?

    We also speak to the fact that many children are misdiagnosed each year when they really have concussions. What can we do to get teachers to understand better what is happening so they can help their students?

    Lastly we review an excellent article I came across by Mandy over at How to Brain, on Sensory Overload. Terry gives us some thoughts and perspectives from her own experiences.
