New works take flight at a cosmic Perth Festival

New works take flight at a cosmic Perth Festival

This year's Perth Festival takes us to the stars, with many events in the program inspired by stories of the cosmos. The West Australian Symphony Orchestra's concert Music of the Spheres included music from Australian composer Richard Mills' forthcoming opera Galileo, inspired by the life of the pioneering Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei.

Also, Aboriginal dreaming stories inspire bold new theatrical work being staged under — and among — the stars, and Palawa writer Nathan Maynard and Māori writer Jamie McCaskill take us on an adventure across the sea and through the stars and spirit world in Hide the Dog.

Subaru Stars and the Seven Sisters

Subaru Stars and the Seven Sisters

Why is the Pleiades Constellation also called the Seven Sisters if we can only see six stars? How did ancient civilizations know there was a seventh star? What does Subaru even mean? Why don't we get to do the Star Lab in college? Justin, Giovanni, and Tristan discuss these important questions and more in this weeks episode.

    Seven Sisters 02: Flakturm

    Seven Sisters 02: Flakturm

With the Allied air forces starting to strike back with bombing raids on cities like Berlin and Hamburg, the German high command ordered the construction of massive concrete anti-aircraft towers in the middle of these core cities. The Luftwaffe would lead the air defenses from these fortresses and they successfully made aerial bombardment a very costly affair.

During the fall of Berlin the Tiergarten "Zoo tower" would come to serve as the last point of resistance in the city, with the last remaining Wehrmacht armored units rallying around the tower for a final futile stand against the the overwhelming forces of the Soviet Red Army.

The Zoo tower was demolished in 1947, but towers in cities like Vienna and Stuttgart still remain and have been converted to alternative use.

    Seven Sisters 01: Berlin 1945

Mattiaz had the opportunity to be a guest on the Fenix-award winning podcast Sweden Rolls and lead the crew there through the KULT: Divinity Lost adventure “Seven Sisters” written by our favorite people Gunilla Jonsson and Michael Petersén.

The adventure is set in Berlin in February 1945, two months before the Red Army conquers the city and the final fall of the Third Reich, and we will follow two allied agents and a German resistance fighter as they go undercover and attempt to track down a missing spy from MI6.
