    How Sharks Devoured My Career

    How Sharks Devoured My Career
When Nat Geo Explorer Gibbs Kuguru was in college, he found himself trying to choose between two terrifying futures: going free diving with sharks off the coast of South Africa or, even scarier, studying for the MCAT. Since then, he’s become devoted to sharks. His genetic research has shown they can do remarkable things, like change color to become more effective predators. And he’s also become a staunch advocate for shark species as they grow more vulnerable to overfishing and the effects of climate change. For more information on this episode, visit natgeo.com/overheard. Want more? If you want more on Gibbs’s journey and his research, check out our story about him online. Plus, we’ve also got an article about how great whites change their color to sneak up on prey. Also explore You can watch Gibbs in the National Geographic documentary Camo Sharks. He and other scientists try to catch sharks in the middle of their color changes. And if you just can’t get enough of sharks, we’ve got a whole bunch of SharkFest stories for you, including how drones are changing how we observe and think about sharks. Roll On: Everything Roll On

    Roll On: Everything Roll On
After a brief hiatus, the boys are back with a classic "old school" edition of 'Roll On', the version of the podcast where we ramble on matters of interest across culture, sports, art, politics, self-betterment, and more. This might be the most Roll On Roll On of all Roll Ons. As always, my co-host is Mr. Adam Skolnick, an activist, veteran journalist, and David Goggins’ Can’t Hurt Me co-author. Specific topics discussed in today’s episode include: Rich’s recent adventures in Colorado (and getting COVID—again); how Jim Thorpe was finally restored as sole winner of 1912 Olympics; Kaitlin Armstrong’s capture in Costa Rica; Francois D’Haene, Kilian Jornet & Courtney Dauwalter’s impressive Hardrock 100 results; Yoshihiko Ishikawa stunning performance at the Badwater 135; the importance of the Webb Telescope images; and  women’s healthcare rights and the future of abortion in America. In addition, we answer the following listener questions: Is an unbalanced life centered on work a rite of passage when it comes to success? How do you embody gratitude? What books changed your life? If you want your query discussed, drop it on our Facebook Page, or better yet leave a voicemail at (424) 235-4626. Today’s episode is also viewable on YouTube. Ep. 755 - Stop Assaulting Me With Your Violent Opinions

Ep. 755 - Stop Assaulting Me With Your Violent Opinions

Today on the Matt Walsh Show, the American Booksellers Association apologizes for a “violent incident” where they promoted a book that leftists don’t like. We’ll talk about this story, and more broadly about the idea that words, books, and opinions can be “violent.” Also Five Headlines including the Surgeon General’s pledge to start putting warning labels on speech it doesn’t like, the White House says it is working with Facebook to tamp down “misinformation,” Pope Francis continues his war against conservative Catholics, leaked audio proves that Sharon Osbourne was set up and framed as a racist before being kicked off her talk show, and in our Daily Cancellation, we’ll talk about the new efforts to combat the negative stereotypes of sharks.

Elasmobranchology (MORE NEW SHARK STORIES) with MISS_Elasmo Shark Scientists

Lemon sharks! Goblin sharks! Bonnet sharks! Whale sharks! And ...sawfish? WE NEEDED A BIGGER BOAT. One shark episode was not enough, during this: The Week of the Shark. Sure, Alie just got married a few days ago, but that doesn’t mean we can’t throw together this bundle of wonder with a few of the incredible researchers from Minorities in Shark Science. Get ready to befriend Jaida Elcock, Jasmin Graham, and Amani Webber-Schultz as they spin yarns about wild field stories, explain why they love sharks, debunk common flim flams, quote favorite shark flicks, and make sure appreciate the stunning diversity and evolution of these ancient creatures. Sharks: nicer than a holy water vending machine. (That’ll make sense later.)

Selachimorphology (SHARKS) Encore with Chris Lowe

Selachimorphology (SHARKS) Encore with Chris Lowe

SHAAAARKS. Leading shark researcher Dr. Chris Lowe dishes about bad shark PR, behind-the-scenes Jaws trivia, his thoughts on Sharknado, surfing safety, immune system marvels, cannibal twins, shark personalities, sea sex, and knife teeth in this, an encore-but-refreshed episode with your newly married pod-dad. Alie learns that sharks are not the ocean's a-holes but true evolutionary marvels who suffer from sensationalized reputations and sometimes inside-out butts. Listen up as a science primer during this, the holy Week of the Shark.

(Note: the study of sharks is also called elasmobranchology, a distinction which could also include skates and rays. Both -ologies are difficult to spell.)
