Domestic Violence and How Survivors Navigate the Court System

Domestic Violence and How Survivors Navigate the Court System

In Connecticut, 1/3 of all criminal court cases involve domestic violence. Everyday dozens of victims seeking help can’t get it and are turned away from critical services, including shelters. Earlier this month a report claimed that Connecticut shelters were at 150 percent capacity. Some agencies were trying to get hotel rooms because of a lack of space. Whether you call it family violence, domestic violence or intimate partner violence it is a serious health crisis in Connecticut.

Jennifer Lopez is the Interval House Director of Court Advocacy Programs in Hartford. Jennifer has worked for 30 years on behalf of domestic violence victims in the court system both in criminal and civil proceedings. She says COVID created a backlog in the court system, and they are still catching up with all the cases. She says every case in court is different but the most important part of leaving an abusive relationship is having a safety plan.

Jane Doe is a domestic violence survivor and is going through both criminal and civil court proceedings and says CT Paid Leave is invaluable. She says there are many court dates, and it makes it hard to take time away from work to attend them.

The Family Violence provisions that CT Paid Leave offers to eligible workers in Connecticut includes 12 days of income replacement along with the Family Violence Leave Act that offers 12 days of job protection for these reasons:

    1.    To seek medical care or psychological or other counseling for physical or psychological injury or disability for the victim (survivor)

    2.    To obtain services from a victim services organization on behalf of the victim(survivor)

    3.    To move or relocate due to such family violence

    4.    To participate in any civil or criminal court proceeding related to or resulting from such family violence.

If you or someone you know is the victim of family, domestic or intimate partner violence the statewide 24-hour toll free # in English call 888-774-2900 for Spanish call 844-831-9200.

Exclusive: Gregg Colburn Explains Why Homelessness is a Housing Problem

At a recent event held at Harvard University the author and professor Gregg Colburn spoke to chiefs of staff and deputy mayors of 30 large US cities, and we're releasing the audio of that speech with a bonus question and answer session. Listen to Colburn discuss the role of housing availability in homelessness, and explain how even when individual factors such as mental illness and substance abuse contribute to homelessness, the root cause is the lack of affordable housing. Colburn emphasizes the need for a structural solution to the housing crisis, as well as the importance of clear messaging and evidence-based interventions.

The Biblical Calendar and Sukkot, the Festival of Shelters

The Biblical Calendar and Sukkot, the Festival of Shelters

To begin with, these events were to be remembered symbolically by living in sukkot for a week once a year to remind them of those desert wanderings and the provision of God. The sukkot or shelters served as a reminder, not only of the shelters they lived in during that time, but of the shelter and protection of God during the desert wanderings.

Additional symbols of this week include the command to rejoice in that which God has provided. This is a harvest festival after all, sometimes called the Feast of Ingathering.

Along with celebration in the provision of God is the theme of rest, with the first and last days being Sabbaths, or days of rest. The rest after a great harvest provides a deep sense of satisfaction and joy, as it is the completion of all of the hard work that has occurred throughout the spring and summer months.

Each day was also to have an offering made by fire, which as we have seen in other studies as being representative of complete consummation in service to God. Even through the rejoicing in the hard physical work which has been completed, there was always to be a remembrance of who was ultimately responsible for their bounty, and their undivided devotion to his purposes.

Besides the celebratory aspect of the waving of the branches, this command in Leviticus comes on the heels of the previous verse which states to celebrate the holiday “for seven days after you have gathered the produce of the land,” (Leviticus 23:39). This produce of the land would naturally include the fruit of the various fruit-producing trees of the land as well.

Ultimately, Yeshua claims to be the very source of the true branches and fruit in which believers can rejoice for all time:

John 15:5 – “I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in me and I in him produces much fruit, because you can do nothing without me.

So if we are to carry the themes of the First Exodus with Moses into this Second Exodus beginning with the ministry of Messiah Yeshua, we can conclude the nation of Israel in the first century was being disciplined during this time for rejecting God’s promised kingdom which Yeshua announced during his ministry. Yeshua had taken them to the brink of the land so they could see the Kingdom of God for themselves, but they wavered in faith and rejected his message, just as Caleb and Joshua’s report was denied. They were choosing instead to hold tight to the principles of Egypt (the political world and their traditions) rather than recognize the presence of God among his people to lead them into the spiritual land of promise: Zion.

    SAMSON'S SANCTUARY GONE GOOD

    SAMSON'S SANCTUARY GONE GOOD
Rickie Tice is the co-founder of Samson's Sanctuary but make no mistake about it: This isn't their first foster/rescue/dog loving adventure. And as many times as they tried to move away from it - including another entire career where they won a Grammy, people - the call of the wild or the cuddly and cute always brings them back. We talk the good of rescue, how fostering even for a weekend can make all the difference, and how we met in a parking lot where they tried to pawn off the cutest pit mix ever (I almost said yes). We love our four legged friends, don't we? You'll love the good Samson's Sanctuary brings each and every day.

A Woman Dedicated to Saving the Lives of Shelter Animals

A Woman Dedicated to Saving the Lives of Shelter Animals

Have you ever wondered how a simple passion for animals can turn into a life-changing journey? Join us as we chat with Melissa Brunson, Executive Director of Marley's Mutts Dog Rescue, and discover how her love for animals and desire to give back to the community led her to become an integral part of this impactful organization. Melissa shares her inspiring story of finding Marley's Mutts through social media and how she started off as a volunteer before rising to her current role.

In today's episode, we dive deep into the challenging world of animal rescue, particularly the issue of overcrowded shelters. Melissa discusses the incredible work of Mutt Movers, a program that transports rescued dogs from overcrowded shelters to other areas, even as far as Washington and across the border to Canada. We also tackle the stigma around shelter dogs and how the majority of these animals are in need of a loving home due to owners who didn't take responsibility for their pets.

Finally, we explore the heartwarming story of Melissa's fur baby, Zoe, a Brindle pit bull mix from Marley's Mutts Dog Rescue and emphasize the importance of breed education in breaking down stigmas and finding these dogs their forever homes. This episode is a must-listen for animal lovers and advocates who want to learn more about the ins and outs of animal rescue and how everyone can do their part, no matter how small, to support organizations like Marley's Mutts and help save the lives of animals in need.

To learn more about Melissa and the work she is doing with Marley’s Mutts, you can follow her on Facebook and Instagram

Marley’s Mutts Dog Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to saving the lives of Kern County’s shelter animals. Marley’s Mutts programs include Pawsitive Change, Miracle Mutts and Mutt Movers. Marley’s mission is making a pawsitive and lasting impact on communities by rehabilitating souls and creating second chances using the power of the human/animal bond. With shelters overcrowded, euthanasia is often the only solution the county has to control the population. Lost and abandoned dogs need all of us to save them from death.

The low-down on animal welfare orgs, dog experts, and the shelter system - are they working in your favor?

The low-down on animal welfare orgs, dog experts, and the shelter system - are they working in your favor?

Welcome to the final episode of 2022 - a not-so-typical year in review.

It is time!  You deserve to know why the dog behavioral experts are keeping the info from you. Why is the shelter system unaware of Canine CBT - or are they? Are behavioral veterinarians any more educated than your average trainer? Why are trainers scared to admit that methods are not meeting the needs of all the clients?

This episode is, essentially, a year in review – with a twist. Have you wondered why the so-called industry experts do not know Canine CBT? Here is your answer! Find out what the industry experts are doing and how it affects you, your dog, and your industry related profession!

    BEFORE LISTENING:

It is important to note two points:

    1)     the orgs or individuals mentioned in the episode are not required, responsible, or expected to accept, review, or evaluate CCBT. Equally, they do not hold the power or the right to assess, approve, disapprove, dismiss, or judge CCBT. The industry is non-regulated, which means there is no governing, regulatory body that is required, or available, to review and assess innovations. There is simply no process or organization, as with regulated industries, to do this. CCBT is scientifically proven by meeting the requirements to scientifically prove a methodology.

    2)     Dr. Nicolas Dodman runs a non-profit organization whose website states the mission is to research and perform studies to discover solutions to prevent behavioral euthanasia and surrender, which is why I reached out to him. During our conversation, he admitted to not knowing what the website stated, and that their goal is to increase donations via media and awareness.

So, both these points will make more sense when you dive into the episode. I apologize for not including this info in the episode.
