Questioning Whether This Podcast Should Exist

Questioning Whether This Podcast Should Exist

Yep, you read the episode title right. Should this podcast even exist?? We here at Meaningful Judaism put our hearts into creating quality podcasts that probe the meanings behind the mitzvot… but what if this whole premise is misguided? What if there’s a fundamental flaw? Does God really want us to be demanding reasons for the mitzvot? If we were really pious, maybe we would be satisfied keeping the mitzvot simply “because the Torah says so”?? And if we’re trying to figure out the “real” reasons for the mitzvot… well, what if we get it wrong? How can we be so conceited as to think we can know God’s mind?

And those aren’t even the most haunting questions. Could Orthodox Judaism afford to spend more time focusing on meaning? And why do the “Meaningful Judaism” reasons behind the mitzvot not seem to be reflected in mainstream Jewish life? Why aren’t our schools and synagogues teaching that keeping kosher is about source awareness and tzitzit are about self-esteem? Is Orthodox Judaism getting it wrong… or are we?

And let’s say you can access the “reasons” behind the mitzvot… Will you find yourself magically rescued from the “roteness” of Jewish life? Such that you will suddenly perform every ritual with all-encompassing devotion, make every blessing with all-encompassing intention, and go about your days with an ever-present awareness of God? Or is that a pipe dream, and this project is unable to deliver on its promises, is doomed from the start?

If these questions itch or interest you, then this painfully honest conversation between Imu Shalev and his teacher, Aleph Beta Lead Scholar Rabbi David Fohrman, is not to be missed.

    One true God

    One true God

One of the primary features of Jewish culture revolves around the reciting of what is known as the Shema. The Shema is based on a very familiar passage to most believers.

Deuteronomy 6:4-5 "Hear, O Israel! Yahweh is our God, Yahweh is one! "You shall love Yahweh your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might."

The Shema has been the primary defining statement of the Hebrew people since it was revealed to them. This fierce monotheism is what has distinctly set apart the Hebrew people since God first revealed himself to Abraham in approximately 2000 BC. The Babylonian, Egyptian, and Eastern religions (and later the Greeks and the Romans) have all been polytheistic religions, filled with hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of gods. The Hebrews were first and unique in their strict rejection of all other gods but one.

Yeshua himself confirms the importance of this concept of one God through the Shema, as well.

Mark 12:28-29 One of the scribes came and heard them arguing, and recognizing that [Yeshua] had answered them well, asked Him, "What commandment is the foremost of all?" Yeshua answered, "The foremost is, 'Hear, O Israel! Yahweh our God, Yahweh is one...'

So, if this has been the historical understanding of the nature of God as being singular, how is it that over the centuries after Messiah, a concept known as the trinity came about? This is what we will be discussing today.

Keeping God's Word before us at all times

Keeping God's Word before us at all times

Matthew 5:20 – “For I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

What Yeshua was teaching the audience of his day was nothing new. God had continually put before the Israelites that the integrity of the actions they were to pursue and the decisions they made should have been coming should have been coming from a genuine place in their hearts, not just outward compliance. Moses had urged this of the Hebrew community over a millennia earlier:

Deuteronomy 6:4-6 – Hear, Israel: Yahweh is our God; Yahweh is one: and you shall love Yahweh your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. These words, which I command you this day, shall be on your heart

In order to continue this focus in their culture Moses had provided them a specific set of instructions or a template that they could implement in the lives of their communities. Moses then proceeds to explain how to imbue the entire community with the richness of God’s Word.

Deuteronomy 6:7 – “Repeat them to your children. Talk about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”

This constant focus on God’s commands would show that his Word is being implemented within the daily fabric of the family, not only at home but when running errands or traveling. When children see that the God’s Word is a vital part of the parents’ lives at all times and in every place, they are more likely to be receptive to it themselves seeing that it has universal application.

It’s been said that immersion in a foreign culture is the best way to learn another language. In a sense, the Kingdom of God is foreign to the cultures of this world, and it takes immersion for us to truly understand the scope and power of its presence here in the lives of believers.

    ETERNAL TREASURE

    ETERNAL TREASURE
The Sermon on the Mount covers significant territory. At some points, we find ourselves nodding in agreement. At others, we find ourselves scratching our heads or even inwardly protesting at what Jesus asks of us. Today's passage falls into that latter category for most of us as we explore God's view of earthly possessions and eternal treasure.

    My Relationship with Worship

    My Relationship with Worship

Part 20 of 23 in the series, "Belonging to Him." How do I relate to worship? Is it just about making it to church each Sunday? Is it just singing songs and hymns? Is it just something you’re supposed to do, but I rarely feel connected to God when I do it? Worship should be a chief focus in nurturing divine intimacy. But if we limit it to just Sunday morning or devotional time, we can miss the power of God's presence in all areas of life. Practicing the presence of God in everything we do will empower us to better glorify him, enjoy him...and belong to him (sermon recorded in 2019).

    Living By Principles

    Living By Principles

Sometimes we entrap ourselves with rules and regulations. Our legislative leaders create laws to guide our behavior in society, but there are always unforeseen consequences that require new laws or changes to the ones that were previously enacted. This is why we have ongoing legislative sessions which constantly churn out new laws in local, state, and federal legislative bodies. If the laws were perfect, they would never need to change, but that hasn’t been our experience. The laws change because we find that the principles which the laws are based upon, such as fairness and liberty, are not always being achieved.

This week we will be reflecting on the principles Jesus points us toward when he is challenged by a scribe. The scribe asked Jesus to identify the most important commandment from God, and Jesus responded with two similar answers, “Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength,” and “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Jesus explains that these commandments most clearly point to the principles behind all the other laws and sayings from the prophets. Join us Sunday as we explore these foundational principles from Christ.

Faith & Works [Real Faith 02]

Faith & Works [Real Faith 02]

What difference does faith make in the lives of Christians? What difference should it make? I think today’s sermon is the one many of my non-Christian friends would like to preach to Christians. They want to see a faith that makes a difference not only in the lives of the individual believer, but also in our communities and in the world. They want to see a faith that works. We need to ask ourselves hard questions like, “whose life around me is different because of my faith in Jesus? Is my faith working in such a way that it’s making a difference for other people? How has my faith matured since I first trusted in Jesus?” We also need to recognize that real faith is a process. Don’t let today’s doubt, today’s failure, keep you from pressing back into the grace of God, trusting that he is good and he has not given up on you.
