Reflecting on Shinzo Abe’s Death One Month On

Reflecting on Shinzo Abe’s Death One Month On

It’s been a month since the assassination of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The shooting came as a shock because Japan is considered one of the safest countries in the world, one where gun violence especially is very much unheard of in modern times. So what has been the sociopolitical fallout of his assassination?

Episode 103 - WHAT WENT WRONG: Unraveling Security Problems That Led To An Assassination With Carlo Pacileo (Part 1)

Episode 103 - WHAT WENT WRONG: Unraveling Security Problems That Led To An Assassination With Carlo Pacileo (Part 1)

On July 8th, 2022, the world was shocked when Shinzo Abe, Japan’s longest-serving Prime Minister was shot dead while delivering a public speech. Many people are wondering how this happened in such a peaceful country.

In this episode, Mark Ledlow welcomes Carlo Pacileo, a security consultant who lives in Japan, and they will be discussing what were the possible reasons why the assailant, Tetsuya Yamagami was able to come near Abe and shot him.

    HIGHLIGHTS

    • Introducing Carlo Pacileo
    • The Prime Minister's security details and routine
    • A culture of obedience
    • The complacent nature of security

    QUOTES

Carlo on heavy reliance on local police instead of personal agents:

“In my opinion, they've relied too much on pulling local police from instead of using their own agents, I don't know what their policy is compared to ours, where you get protection for life as a former head of state.”

Carlo discusses the culture of obedience in Japan:

“Here it's a culture where everyone does what they're told, for the most part. There aren't any rebels. There aren't any there. No one smashing in the windows and flipping over cars and burning all that stuff when they're upset compared to the States at times.”

Carlo talks about the complacency of security:

“It's not just the no-crime thing. They're so used to everyone falling in line, everyone. You put out a government announcement, like with the mass thing, or stay indoors, everyone, everyone follows orders.”

Sri Lanka Economic Crisis; Boris Johnson’s Exit & Shinzo Abe’s Formidable Legacy

Sri Lanka's economic crisis crosses over 100 days as President Gotabaya Rajapaksa resigns and flees amid mass public protests. The trust deficit between the political class and the Sri Lankan populace continues to exacerbate the current socioeconomic breakdown, raising fear among all neighbouring countries.

The assassination of Japan’s Prime Minister has revived conversations on Japan’s foreign policy outreach and his close ties with Prime Minister Modi. A longstanding ally for India, Shinzo Abe’s legacy is worth looking into to understand the ensuing narrative of South Asian politics and India’s role in this discourse.

With the US House of Representatives sanctioning a waiver for India-specific CAATSA Act, how will this bilateral relationship affect the geopolitical shift in the Indo-Pacific, especially with China's rise to power?

As Rishi Sunak, the former UK Finance Minister widens his lead in the ongoing PM campaign race, will the much-awaited British elections reform the past mismanagement of Boris Johnson?
What partnership is expected to emerge with the advent of the New Quad in West Asia and how will it change current geo-strategies in the Indian Ocean?
