Rebecca Rushton - Think you Know Everything About Blisters?.... THINK AGAIN!

Rebecca Rushton - Think you Know Everything About Blisters?.... THINK AGAIN!

Foot blisters are one of the most common foot injuries in sport and everyday life. Yet their cause is largely misunderstood.

Real experts are pretty thin on the ground, but Bec Rushton qualifies for this moniker and has been helping people prevent and treat foot blisters in her podiatry clinic, on the sporting field and track-side at running events for twenty five years.

In this episode of SHOEphoria Bec opens the lid on the Pandora’s box that is blister management, skewers a few sacred cows, and blows up many of the myths and legends so many of us have adhered to.

It is a must listen to podcast for anyone who works with athletes and manages blisters.

We can promise you this will change the way you manage blisters and is one of the most powerful SHOEphoria podcasts to date.

Deena Kastor Asics Ambassador talks Running and Running Shoes

Deena Kastor Asics Ambassador talks Running and Running Shoes

It is difficult to know where to start with our guest on this episode of SHOEphoria.

She honed her distance running craft as a cross country champion winning two silver medals (2002 Dublin, long race; 2003 Lausanne, long race) in the IAAF World Cross Country Championships.

She then switched focus to the marathon distance and set her best time of 2:19:36 at the 2006 London Marathon.

This time stands to this day as the American record.

She is an Olympic Bronze medallist.

She holds or has held numerous other American distance records, including the women’s road 10 mile, women’s road 15km and women’s road 8 km, and formally the women’s half marathon and women’s 10,000 metres.

Track and Field magazine named her the Best female marathon runner in the world in 2006.

Deena Kastor is quite simply one of the best female distance runners of all time, and I have been privileged to have know her for many years.

Deena has a unique insight into athletic footwear, as a long term ASICS sponsored athlete and Ambassador, a role she has performed with great distinction and grace.

In this fascinating episode of SHOEphoria, Deena shares her knowledge of what it is to be an Olympian, how much difference footwear can make to an elite athlete…and what happens when you get injured. She also shares with us the role of mental toughness for the endurance athlete, something.. she has written the book on (link below).

Dr Martyn Shorten - Pronation and Motion Control in Footwear is Pure Marketing

Dr Martyn Shorten - Pronation and Motion Control in Footwear is Pure Marketing

Part 1 of a 2 part podcast with Dr Martyn Shorten

It is not often one gets the opportunity to chat with someone who has worked with Nike Founder Phil Knight AND the legendary Nike innovator Bill Bowerman. Or for that matter with Mark Parker and Tom Clarke, both of whom started in the Nike Sports Research Laboratory and rose through the ranks to become CEO’s of the entire shebang!

My guest today on Shoephoria episode 6 is considered one of the true legends of the world of footwear and footwear biomechanics and with a career spanning 42 years, there is not a lot he has not seen or done.

    Dr. Martyn Shorten

He joined Nike the year after a young college basketballer named Michael Jordan was snapped up as an endorsed athlete by the company, a relatively new concept at the time. It is fair to say this turned out to be an Ok investment for Nike!

Martyn sharpened his teeth on the very first of the visible air shoes, natural successors to the very first Nike Air running shoe, the Tailwind.

After a very successful stint at Nike, eventually as director of the Sport Research Laboratory, Martyn moved to the global body of Puma, to take on the role as Director of Research, Design and Product Development.

Martyn is not short of an opinion, however that opinion is invariably followed by hard evidence to back it up.

He is scathing of some of the trends that have, and continue to drive the athletic footwear industry, not  the least the concept of overpronation, motion control in footwear and analysis of footwear by heel angle.

This is a fascinating and at time challenging interview, one of the best, and not to be missed.

Such is Martyn’s knowledge,  and the depth of his experience, that this is part 1 of a 2 part Shoephoria podcast. Enjoy!

Thanks you for listening to SHOEphoria Podcast and we hope you will find the time to leave a little review.

Episode 3 - Jeff Dengate & The Running Landscape During and Post COVID-19

Jeff is Runner-in-Chief for Runner's World, guiding the brand's shoes and gear coverage. A true shoe dog, he's spent more than a decade testing and reviewing shoes. In 2017, he ran in 285 different pairs of shoes, including a streak of 257 days wearing a different model.

In this 30 minute podcast episode of SHOEphoria, Simon Bartold from Bartold Clinical talks with Jeff all things surrounding the current state of play with COVID-19 and its direct effect on the running industry as a whole.  We also look into how the landscape looks post COVID19.  Don't worry, we also talk about shoes!

Episode 2 - Alex Hutchinson on Athletic Performance. Physiology? Shoe Tech?... or something else!??...

Episode 2 - Alex Hutchinson on Athletic Performance. Physiology? Shoe Tech?... or something else!??...

Right now we are negotiating many interesting aspects of athlete performance. Not the least of these is performance enhancement, either by drugs, blood doping  or even with the new “Super Shoes”.

We have seen stunning performances in recent times, with world records falling, and even one of the most enduring and challenging records in athletics, the sub 2 hour marathon, falling. Almost exclusively, the finger has been pointed at the shoes these athletes are wearing, especially in relation to carbon plates, construction and geometry. Are they “EPO for the feet”? Or, are they masking something else?

When we see personal best times with elites falling by many minutes, when traditionally improvement is measure in seconds, it may just be that the new shoe technology is providing a smokescreen for something a bit more sinister.

Today’s guest on Shoephoria is esteemed sports scientist and sports journalist Alex Hutchinson, and we explore these issues and others in today’s episode.

Alex is a fearless reporter on the science behind athletic performance and what it might mean. This is a must listen interview with one of the best brains in sport.

If you are interested in performance, sports footwear, and the state of play of athletics right now, you must tune in!
