#6. Why healthy feet are important and what you can do to stay on your toes, with Podiatrist Dr Stephanie Suber

Our feet are, quite literally, the foundations of our body. And contrary to what a modern society leads us to believe, our feet should be both strong and mobile (so strong in fact that they don’t need cushioned shoes or arch supports ;P)

In this episode I’m joined by Sports Scientist and Podiatrist, and founder of The Foot Company, Dr Stephanie Suber, to talk all things healthy feet.

Join us as we answer the following questions:

    • How can you tell if your feet are unhealthy?
    • What are some of the common signs of unhealthy feet?
    • What are the consequences of letting your feet become unhealthy?
    • What can you do to build strong, mobile and resilient feet?

We hope this episode keeps you on your toes!

The Foot Company offers podiatry and sports podiatry consultations for kids, adults, seniors, runners and athletes. You can find more on Steph and her business on instagram at @thefootcompany_au and @dr.suber or www.thefootcompany.com.au

    Plantar Fasciitis

    Plantar Fasciitis

The plantar fascia is the most bottom superficial level of your foot. It’s a ligament that originates at the heel bone and goes all the way up to the ball of your foot. Plantar fasciitis occurs when that ligament becomes irritated and inflamed, resulting in pain and swelling in the bottom of the heel. Learn more about diagnosing and treating plantar fasciitis, and what to expect if you need treatment.

EP. 20 ANDY BRANT - STABILITY, SHOES, & OUR FEET

EP. 20 ANDY BRANT - STABILITY, SHOES, & OUR FEET

Stability is one of the most important, overlooked variables that significantly influences how much you can get out of any exercise. When I take a look at peoples shoes at the gym, oftentimes they’re overly cushioned, do not provide stability at the sides, or do not have a flat sole.

    ⁣⠀

I don’t know who had the idea that squatting, or doing any movement on *basically* PILLOWS would be a a good idea.

We have 104 different mechanoreceptors on the bottom of the feet. They respond to different stimuli such as texture, deep pressure, skin stretch and vibration. ⁣Roughly 80% of the receptors on the bottom of the feet are sensitive to vibration. This is actually how we detect impact forces coming in to our bodies!

    ⁣⠀

Guess what shoes and socks do? They block this powerful information from coming into the body via the nervous system making the information delayed or inaccurate.

    ⁣⠀

In order to improve balance and stability, we want to stimulate these small nerves in the skin on the bottom of the feet. Having a minimal shoe that enhances your natural foot function (not replace it) will allow this information to travel to the brain quicker and place you in a more stable position.

    ⁣⠀

In this episode of anabolic radio I had the pleasure of chatting to Andy Bryant who has been a practicing podiatrist for 10+ we dive into the nitty gritty details of feet, shoes, walking mechanics and much more! Tune into the episode for the full discussion.

Identifying Sever's Disease in Children & The Causes

Identifying Sever's Disease in Children & The Causes

In this episode, Dr. Mikkel Jarman discusses how to determine whether a child's heel pain is the result of Sever's disease. Sever's is a condition caused by a growth spurt in which the heel bone grows at a faster rate than the muscles and tendons surrounding it. While it is painful, it is usually temporary and mainly affects children ages seven to fourteen years old.  Heel pain will worsen with physical ground and pound activities such as dance and gymnastics, soccer, football, baseball. Sever's disease treatments can include: elevating the leg and applying ice, specific leg and foot stretches, and sometimes custom orthotic shoe inserts.

Toe Walking in Children - Is There Reason For Concern?

Toe Walking in Children - Is There Reason For Concern?

Toe walking is a walking pattern in which the child walks on their toes or the balls of their feet and there’s no contact of the heel to the ground. For children 3 years and younger, toe walking is very common. However, for children ages 3 and up toe walking may be associated with a medical condition. Fortunately, over 90% of these cases can be treated with conservative treatment options.

In this audio track, Dr. Jarman with Pediatric Foot & Ankle in Arizona, discusses toe walking in children and when there is reason for concern and when there is not.

The Importance of Choosing a Pediatric Podiatrist for Children’s Foot and Ankle Problems

The Importance of Choosing a Pediatric Podiatrist for Children’s Foot and Ankle Problems

It's important to realize that children's and adult feet are not the same and should NOT be treated the same.
There are many foot conditions that children have that adults do not. One example is Sever's disease. Sever's is only found in children but is commonly misdiagnosed as Plantar Fasciitis by podiatrists that only see adults. Podiatrists that rarely or never see children generally do not have the same knowlege of how to identify and treat children's feet conditions. These children will be diagnosed treated as if they were adults and the outcomes can be less than ideal or even damaging. In this episode Dr. Mikkel Jarman discusses the importance of choosing a pediatric podiatrist and how to choose the correct one.

Dr. Mikkel Jarman's practice Pediatric Foot & Ankle only treats kids and specializes in children's foot conditions from the ages of infant through teenage years.
