It really is... a whole new world. Yeah, I just said that.

Een live action Lion King? Ach welnee, het is gewoon uit de computer komen rollen, en het haalde 1,7 miljard dollar op. De figuren uit de klassieker uit 1994 zien er nu uit alsof ze echt in de Afrikaanse serengeti zouden kunnen rondlopen, en hebben stemmen van mensen die nu beroemd zijn. Maakt dat een goede film?

Ja, vindt Angela Verkuijlen. Ze is een van de aanstichters van de Cultuur Academy, een initiatief om Nijmeegse cultuurmakers op weg te helpen, en was tot eind 2017 nog de Nachtburgemeester van Nijmegen. Ook maakt ze theater en richtte ze ooit mede de Plees to Be op. En ze houdt van The Lion King, in welke versie dan ook.

Host Ruud walgt er echter maar van. 

Verder hebben we het ook over de vocale capaciteiten van Beyoncé, nieuwe technieken als gimmick om films aan de man te brengen en de sex appeal van leeuwenvrouwtje Nala.

Thomas Schumacher, President of Disney Theatricals, joined Laura in November 2017 to talk about the 20th Anniversary of The Lion King on Broadway. They became fast friends, digging into his long history with the Walt Disney company, including his ushering in a new era in theatre with this groundbreaking production. This was the first interview in which he discussed the casting and plans for the new film, which now (nearly two years later) is in movie theaters everywhere!
