Hey Listener, you’re going to need your whistle and skates for this one. Wheezy from the Cincinnati Rollergirls is in the basement this week to talk about her change from all star level point scorer to referee. Topics this week include: Lurking in the social media shadows. Youtube University. The joy of quickly achieving new things. Accidentally making the team on the first try. Roller Derby: a sketchy sport. Monster butterflies. Playing an amateur sport like it’s a pro sport. Learning to think while playing. A good official doesn’t stand out. The shorthand of speaking with refs. The penalty triangle. Guilty of being a jammer watcher. How to have a good game as a referee? Why am I being cheated right now? Working with the crew. The importance of keeping the game moving. Why sports need announcers. Injuries. Mini clipboard. 2020 and the season that never was. A different world. Finding a balance in life.

#100 Fredrik Sjöström - General Manager, Frölunda HC

#100 Fredrik Sjöström - General Manager, Frölunda HC

Welcome to episode 100 of Sports Management Podcast.

If you have been listening since episode 1, send me a DM or tag me on Instagram or Twitter @sportsmpodcast and I will send you some gratitude merch.

Fredrik Sjöström is the general manager for Frölunda Hockey Club, one of the most successful European hockey clubs the last decade. He is also a former NHL player and was drafted by Phoenix Coyotes as 11th overall. I took my microphone and met Fredrik at Frölunda’s training facility to ask him:

    • How is he building the team for next season?
    • What other GM is he looking up to?
    • Why didn’t he offer Loui Eriksson an extension?
    • What was it like having Wayne Gretzky, the best of all time, as a coach?
    • What actually happened with Ryan Lasch’s contract?
    • What does he admire most with the Lundqvist brothers

    And much more!

This episode will have no sponsor, no interruption and no BS. If I can ask you for one thing, please subscribe to the podcast and share it with a friend. The bigger the podcast gets, the better the guests get.

    Thank you!!

Ep 26 | Queer Eye: "Stoner Skates By"

Ep 26 | Queer Eye: "Stoner Skates By"
Now that Thomas is permanently cured of his MMORPG blues, Queer Eye's fab five turn their attention to a skating Stoner. No, it isn't nearly as rad as it sounds, but the Boob Tubers were still quite into it. Listen to hear all about suits lined with nudity, pancakes covered in blueberries, and parental negligence obfuscated by affability. Will Van learn to love Jonathan Van Ness? Will Spencer offer insight into his time as a professional figure skater? You will find out the answers to these questions as well as what show Brian is unleashing on Van next week if you follow Steven Tyler's instructions and Just Push Play.

Ep108: Eulogizing Daft Punk Helmets, Bitcoin Feeling the Heat, Squeezing Soft Robots, and Motorizing Ice Skates

Ep108: Eulogizing Daft Punk Helmets, Bitcoin Feeling the Heat, Squeezing Soft Robots, and Motorizing Ice Skates

Hackaday editors Elliot Williams and Mike Szczys travel through the greatest hacks the week had on offer. Charge up your ice skates (literally) by adding spiked electric motors to push you across the frozen pond. If that's too cold for early March, snuggle up with a good book under the warm light of a clever lamp made from a rotary-dial telephone. We discuss CAD and CAM in your browser, and a software tool to merge images with PCB gerber files. The episode wraps up with a discussion the balance of quality versus speed when prototyping, and digesting the environmental impact of the Bitcoin network.

Lifestyle By Design with Tom Hyser

Lifestyle By Design with Tom Hyser

Tom Hyser has been living his life by design since the before high school.  He has always had a vision for what he want and has lived an amazing life pursuing this vision.  Its been quite a ride reflecting back on how many different ways and places Tom has done this.  It all first started right after graduation when 4 crazy kids took off to California for an epic summer of adventure I will never forget.  But Tom had a plan, even back then, that plan saw him become a pro skater. Which took him to Seattle to design in-line skates for K2.  Then, coming back home to GA, he started a dot.com company at a time when few had done so.  After growing that brand and establishing a skate community in the Southeast, he then realized his dream of working for Rollerblade growing both the industry he helped establish and creating a culture along the way.  Now back from a stint in New England that saw him crystalize his role of father and husband, He and Erin have taken the next step in realizing their dreams of a lifestyle by design.  For them, That’s now the pro mountain biker lifestyle which is exactly what both their kids are well on their way to becoming.  Hope you enjoy my conversation with the always entertaining Tom Hyser.
