    Crystal Skulls

Crystal skulls are fascinating crystal carvings often associated with an incredible legend about gods from the sky. Are these artifacts truly ancient or are they modern fakes? Or could they really be gifts from extraterrestrials?

Richey Beckett | The Devil In The Details

Richey Beckett | The Devil In The Details
The amazing artist Richey Beckett joins me on the Nod!

For those who don't know, Richey is one of the most well known and respected illustrators alive at the moment.  He's made posters for some of the biggest bands, movies and shows in the world as well as some of the coolest! Converge, Mastodon, Metallica, The Grateful Dead, Game Of Thrones, Lord Of The Rings... You get the picture.

This episode is deeply ironic in that when we first discussed doing it a few months back, Richey was in the middle of some big big changes.  As you'll hear him explain in detail, he was basically living a life of artistic isolation for the last 5 years and was about to go completely nomadic indefinitely shifting to pop ups, residencies and gallery tours.   And while that doesn't seem to be in the cards anytime soon this chat is a wonderful window into the mind of a constantly evolving artist.

We talk about COVID-19 some but mostly we talk a lot about the life of an artist and the importance of change, challenge and improvisation.  We recorded this in the middle of March just as everything really started to kick off.   It was deeply therapeutic to have a long conversation right at the beginning of this wild time that is still currently unfolding.  I hope it gives you a similar light hearted escape that it gave to me.
Please check out Richey's work at his website

James Poskett - Materials of the Mind: Phrenology, Race, and the Global History of Science, 1815-1920

James Poskett - Materials of the Mind: Phrenology, Race, and the Global History of Science, 1815-1920
Dr James Poskett (Warwick) delivered this lecture on October 15th 2019 at the University of St Andrews. Phrenology was the most popular mental science of the Victorian age. From American senators to Indian social reformers, this new mental science found supporters around the globe. James’s new book, Materials of the Mind, tells the story of how phrenology changed the world—and how the world changed phrenology. It is a story of skulls from the Arctic, plaster casts from Haiti, books from Bengal, and letters from the Pacific. It shows how the circulation of material culture underpinned the emergence of a new materialist philosophy of the mind, while also demonstrating how a global approach to history can help us reassess issues such as race, technology, and politics today.

Brien Foerster Bigfoot DNA and Paracas Elongated Skulls

Brien Foerster Bigfoot DNA and Paracas Elongated Skulls

Brien Foerster is having trouble with his Paracas mummy DNA testing – a familiar story? If you’re familiar with Encounters USA or Aliens, Bigfoot and Dogman, you already know the story. Today we are going to briefly discuss a few of the roadblocks to Brien Foerster’s attempts at DNA testing. However, what Brien has already found is astonishing. We will be talking about the Red-Haired Giants of Paracas as we uncover a few blaring facts about the Americas and connections to Europe that go farther back and in more ways than many imagined possible.

Science and hidden knowledge – this is an episode of encounters USA you cannot afford to miss!

    Episode 107 - Crystal Skullduggery

    Episode 107 - Crystal Skullduggery

Fresh from a convention of caricature artists and with heads full of pareidolia, Ben and Celestia discuss a few topics of the day and then dig into crystal skulls. Can we trust what Dan Ayrkroyd tells us on his fancy vodka bottle? Are there really thirteen of these ancient and powerful relics? What is the Skull of Doom, and does it have strange properties that baffle scientists? These skulls provide a fascinating look into rewritten histories and the power of priming. We even look at an ill-conceived lawsuit against Steven Spielberg involving the crystal skulls featured in the latest Indiana Jones installment.

Dani Morin owns two businesses and currently lives in Arizona. She ran Machine Nightclub, holds two Red Seals for welding, never stops learning, creates gorgeous gothic-art-deco-steampunk-style jewellery, and she is totally kickass.

We talk about being a woman in the trades, bending steel to her will, her passion for Wasteland Weekend, dirt biking, firearms, and her never-ending pursuit of higher education. Calling her a rebel is an understatement.

Big Brains Boost Deer - Naked Scientists Special Editions 17.01.06
Us humans boast about our big brains but until now, evidence has been scant to suggest that animals also benefit from having larger brains. Cambridge University's Corina Logan measured the skulls of 1314 red deer from the Isle of Rum to see if the brainy stags and does were more successful. She explained her results to Naked Scientist Tom O'Hanlon...

Sugar Skulls | A Sweet Mexican Tradition (TSB003)

Sugar Skulls | A Sweet Mexican Tradition (TSB003)

If you were a child growing up in the U.S., you likely remember the feeling of waking up with a sugar hangover on November 1st, after walking all night to fill up your bucket with Halloween candy and eating too many, only to have a sugar rush that night, followed by a major crash. The last thing you’ll want to do that day is look at any more sugar. Unless you happen to visit Mexico, Latin America or live in one of the South-West states that celebrates Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, with traditional sugar skulls.

In this episode, we’ll be talking about the significance of skulls in remembering those who have died, combining ancient religious celebrations with traditions of early settlers, and the sweet happenstance of using sugar as a means of decoration. I’m your host, Emily Prokop, and this is the story behind Sugar Skulls.
