DIE FELDLERCHE (FOLGE 36)
42. The Thresher's Tale
On April 10, 1963, the USS Thresher, the lead boat of her class of nuclear-powered submarines, went down with all hands 220-miles off the coast of Cape Cod. It was the deadliest submarine disaster in U.S. naval history. The loss of the Thresher was never fully explained and the Navy never released the report on the its sinking. That is, until a retired submarine commander sued the Navy, forcing them to come clean! Now we know why she sank...at least what the Navy thinks because analysis of SOSUS data paints a different (and more plausible) picture of events. Still, one thing we do know is the sinking of the Thresher led to sweeping changes in the submarine force that has ensured the safe operating of these vessels ever since.

I got an email from Iona last week. They said they are about to release final CD. The band is not breaking up, but the changing music industry is forcing them to change how they release music, or in their case, stop releasing it.
This is a good time to point out that if you enjoy the music of bands in this podcast, there are several important things you can to do. If you still buy CDs, buy one from one of these bands. If not, buy downloads or band merchandise. Or if you're streaming music (outside of this podcast, of course), then follow the bands on Spotify or whatever streaming website they prefer.
Finally, I'm planning to do more Spotify promotions. So if you have any Celtic music playlists on Spotify, I'd love to hear from you. Drop me an email.
If you want to find 11 more ways you can help support these bands, go to songhenge.com. This simple easy list will do a lot to help your favorite bands succeed.

Michael Finlay emailed: "Just letting you know, I'm a new listener, though I should have been listening ages ago. I'm from Chicago but my Dad was from Liverpool, and I spent quite a lot of time in the British Isles. I'm deep in the bowels of NaNoWriMo at the moment and your show has been providing me with the most perfect soundtrack to keep my butt focused on finishing this project. You're doing amazing work. Thank you!"
Trish Bartley shared the first podcast of 2018 on Facebook and wrote: "This week's podcast is full of gorgeous songs to drive by! Makes my 45 minute commute "almost" too short. Lol. Thanks Marc Gunn! Awesome job!"
George Mears emailed: "Marc, I've been a lurker for years as I've stumbled through adulthood, fatherhood, husbandhood, and school. I've become a patron but I didn't see any opportunity to make a one time donation, which i'd like to do for all the ... years I've been mooching. Any easy answer or should I just mail you cash?"

I grew up in West Clare with my family and moved to Boston when I was very young. Fetus young. Dan Buchner emailed from from Niagara Falls, NY: "Hey Marc! Discovered the podcast over the summer. Great mix of music. The last couple weeks I’ve listened to a few I got behind on while restoring some old windows from a friend's 100 year old house. The tempo and mix helps me get through the work with ease."
Will Collins emailed: “Hey Marc (if I can call you that), I only found your podcast at the beginning of October but it's already got its hooks in me. I am a junior in college dual majoring in engineering and math. This isn't as exciting as anyone else, but I listen to the newest episodes and the giant backlog that exists every saturday during my 8-hour study sessions. It really makes the time fly, and I really appreciate all the work you put into making the best podcast around! Hope this finds you merry,“
Thanks Will. I’m so glad you found the show. It’s funny. You say that listening while studying for eight hours isn’t as exciting, but man, I love to hear it. Sure it’s nice to think that we are all traveling in Ireland or Scotland, and listening to the podcast. But the truth is I listen while cleaning house, giving the girls a bath, or playing it to wear out overactive daughters right before bed.
Most of our lives are spent in mundane tasks. And while you may think it is uninteresting, personally, I find those mundane pieces of life to be fascinating and inspiring. And it lets me know how to make the show better. So thank you
My Cousin Vinny - Reels and Wheels
On this peculiar edition of Reels and Wheels, James and Sid are joined by... James. Yep, Co-host James Rodatus doubles up as the guest this time as he puts his experience as a lawyer to work so that we can talk about My Cousin Vinny.
This 1992 comedy starring Joe Pesci was lauded for its realistic, positive portrayal of our legal system. So I guess technically this is an episode of Reels and Lawyers and Wheels. Either way, My Cousin Vinny is a thoughtful, enjoyable, and fun movie that uses the inner workings of a 1964 Buick Skylark and a 1963 Pontiac Tempest as a key plot point.
So how accurate was this movie? How unique was the cast? What about the car we didn't see - find out what made the first generation Pontiac Tempest one of the most unique cars GM ever built!
Find our special guest James Rodatus online @S2KJames and find Sid @SidBridgeComedy - leave us some feedback! Subscribe to @ReelsAndWheels on iTunes and Stitcher and spread the word!
