In this previously recorded episode, Wellington and Savon discussed how the Wild Card round for the NFL playoffs wrapped up and their initial expectations for the Divisional Round. For the album reviews, they start off with Skyzoo, The Other Guys’ The Mind of a Saint album, Declaime, Madlib’s In The Beginning (Vol. 3) and review Logic’s new single “Wake Up” feat. Lucy Rose. Finally, they give their honest opinion and disappointment with PARTYNEXTDOOR’s single “Her Old Friends” and discuss the new A$AP Rocky song “Same Problems?” and why his new album is one they’re anticipating in a major way. 

In the second half, they review Nanny, the 2022 horror film written and directed by Nikyatu Jusu. Starring Anna Diop, Michelle Monaghan, Sinqua Walls and Morgan Spector. They start off by discussing how this film was bolstered by Anna Diop’s strong central performance and this movie intricately weaving a tale that may be similar to other films but not in its main character. They also analyzed how Nanny was very grounded in its approach to mental health and awareness plus why this movie may not be as rewatchable based on how it was distributed.

How do you approach music from a business standpoint? As an entrepreneur, musician and writer, Brooklyn rapper Skyzoo is the epitome of a one man band. Since becoming friends in 2005, he and Tobias Rose have been thought collaborators on entrepreneurship and hip hop. Hear Skyzoo’s unique approach to the business of music and how he continues to pursue the music he wants to make. He also discusses how he pivoted his business during the pandemic, including increasing his streaming efforts and building a studio in his basement. Skyzoo speaks about the future of the music industry and the making of his most recent album “All the Brilliant Things.”

Episode 13 of This Is Not Happening stays in NYC with Skyzoo's new album All The Brilliant Things following up the 70s palette of  St Vincent: Daddy's Home.  The much-respected Brooklyn  MC's 7th album finds him  writing a paen to his changing city, gentrification and history. It's a beguiling work that Nolan brought to us get deep on as we move into season 2 of the podcast. There's playlists that run alongside the episode here.

Welcome to Season 2 of This Is Not Happening, an Album of the Month podcast from four of us: Guy, Joey, Nolan and David. We choose an album: we digest it, we praise it, we question it. And we bring tracks to the table. Every month. And you get to listen. Think of this as a highlights package. 

A year into it, we've been lucky enough to cover some amazing albums, right from the start. From RTJ to Arlo Parks, Genesis Owusu to Sault, and the Weather Station to Jessie Ware.
