    Midweek Mention... The Bulldog Breed

Welcome back to Bad Dads Film Review, where today we're setting our sights on a classic piece of British cinema, The Bulldog Breed. Released in 1960, this film is a delightful mix of comedy, romance, and a dash of patriotism, embodying the charm and wit of early British films.

The Bulldog Breed stars the iconic Norman Wisdom, known for his slapstick humor and impeccable comedic timing, as Norman Puckle. After being rejected by the love of his life for not being adventurous enough, Puckle joins the Royal Navy, where his misadventures begin. What follows is a series of hilarious and often absurd events that lead Norman from being a hopeless romantic to an unlikely hero.

Our protagonist, Norman Puckle, finds himself in a whirlwind of naval training mishaps, including a memorable scene involving a rocket and an unintended trip to space. Yes, you heard that right – space! The film cleverly combines everyday situational comedy with the fantastical, making it a unique watch even by today's standards.

The Bulldog Breed is a showcase of Norman Wisdom's comedic genius. The film is packed with laugh-out-loud moments, showcasing Wisdom's physical comedy and endearing character work. It's a light-hearted look at naval life and British stoicism, with a message about perseverance and self-belief at its core.

So, whether you're a long-time fan of Norman Wisdom or new to his work, The Bulldog Breed offers a charming, laugh-filled voyage back to the golden age of British comedy. Reegs especially enjoyed this one!

Join us on Bad Dads Film Review as we dive into this gem of a film, exploring its comedic highs and heartfelt message. It’s time to hoist the sails for a journey filled with laughs, love, and a bit of lunacy! 🚢🎭🇬🇧👨‍👧‍👦🍿

We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. If it hasn't been completely destroyed yet you can usually find us on twitter @dads_film, on Facebook Bad Dads Film Review, on email at baddadsjsy@gmail.com or on our website baddadsfilm.com.

Episode 305: 'RocketMan' (1997) with Hal Lublin

Ahh 1997...a time when comedy movie presidents did Bill Clinton impressions, apes were the toast of Hollywood, and NASA launched the first manned mission to Mars. That's what's happening in this year's Listener Pick, chosen by our supporter, Robin. It's Disney's RocketMan, a live-action, slapstick farce starring Harland Williams as the smartest, dumbest astronaut  around.

Drag Me to Hell - Shame, Consequence, and Body Fluids

Drag Me to Hell - Shame, Consequence, and Body Fluids

    MOVIE DISCUSSION:

Melanie joins Melvin to talk Sam Raimi's 2009 return-to-horror feature Drag Me to Hell, a film so silly it disorients most viewers, including Melanie! From slapstick violence to cartoon gore, this movie surprised its PG-13 audience from start to finish!

    Topics:

    • (PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 18-minutes discussing AMC Theater's new tiered-seating price points, from value-pricing at the front to premium-pricing at the center (PATREON EXCLUSIVE)
    • Melanie has specifically told Melvin that Drag Me to Hell was a movie she hated. Has that changed?
    • Melvin gives some background to the Sam Raimi style, something that no doubt shocks and stuns the unprepared.
    • The hyperbole of Drag Me to Hell helps exemplify the subtle yet damning ways in which people can disregard one another, or put oneself before others, and all of this is made exceedingly evident in the complicating incident.
    • Melanie, "It was so funny and I think I was just able to appreciate the more comedic elements of the film. There were still a few jump scares here or there, but you get startled and then you laugh."
    • Sometimes, people are ashamed of things they don't necessarily have to be ashamed about, while also not being ashamed about things they ought to. Drag Me to Hell displays both of these from opening to closing credits.
    • Christine thinks that demanding the old woman to forgive her will somehow fix the curse, but demanding someone to forgive you for your sin isn't repentance, because repentance is a full-on submission to wrong-doing, which categorically removes the ability for demands. With this in mind, Christine shows she hasn't learned anything.
    • What makes an ending satisfying, and must the hero always succeed?
    • Horror movies are interesting because whereas other movies will have some alien or virus or an idea as the villain, horror movies pick obvious things like murderers, demons, or the literal devil. As Christians - and it may sound weird for others to hear - but having hell or the devil as a literary consequence or threat is often more realistic to our daily life, and thus makes horror movies sometimes more intriguing.

Episode 39 Friday the 13th pt. 6 Jason Lives

Considered a turning point in the F13 series, Jason Lives takes Jason from supernatural stalker to re-animated zombie with a penchant for hilarious murder.  Running Scared co-hosts revisit the grassy plains of Jane and Wilson  where Jamie's Scottish grandparents let him watch horror at a young age, and review the 1986 "classic".  We count at least 7 unnecessary deaths. Is this horror-comedy? Or is it horror-slapstick? Is Horshack your best back-up man?  Does Jason's corpse get better looking as it ages? Does Jason kill kids? Can a goalie mask stand up to a rock pounding?

Folge 11: HERE'S TO THE YOUNG LADY (1949)

Folge 11: HERE'S TO THE YOUNG LADY (1949)
